'I know from following recent news reports that they are making plans to bring this nation down economically should there be no other way to maintain equilibrium. '
Pessimist, to what reports do you refer?
Posted by c at February 16, 2006 08:39 AMI don't have the time to provide exact links right at the moment, but if you Google 'Iran Oil Bourse', you will find several excellent analyses on the consequences of that action. One was written by a VP of the Cato Institute and can be found on Foxnews.com. Another was written by Global Research. There are others.

Posted by 12.215.85.45 at February 16, 2006 08:53 AMI noticed that Sherrod Brown's name is absent from the list of sponsors of the impeachment probe. Brown apologists are all over the blogs right now proclaiming that he is a great progressive while calling Paul Hackett a whiner, a coward and other names. It's not enough cheap shot artists that Brown's campaign engaged in a smear campaign alleging that Hackett was involved in Iraqi war crimes, they have to continue their slander even after he's withdrawn from the race. Apparently Paul was expected leave the knife in his back, smile nicely and proclaim Brown to be a wonderful guy.
Yeah..Brown is a great progressive...sure he is.
Grazie for the ip address.
I hope you freeze your arse off in this cold front, troll!
Posted by idiosynchronic at February 16, 2006 09:45 AMThe smear campaign against Hackett was done by Schmidt. Brown's people helped him run for OH-02. Divide and conquer. It's what the GOP does but judging by some of these comments, we may do it better to ourselves.
Posted by Ga6thDem at February 16, 2006 09:48 AMWell, I'm not saying people should vote for Mike DeWine. Sherrod Brown may be a double-crossing, back-stabbing sonofabitch, but he is a Democrat, so hold your nose and vote for him. Democrats are pretty good at the holding the nose thing by now.
Posted by Greg at February 16, 2006 10:26 AMAnd I thought the NFL's ban on post touch-down endzone celebrations was bad.
"The new law will mean that if people are going to start celebrating acts of terrorism or condoning people who engage in terrorism, they will be prosecuted, and if they do not come from this country, they should not be in this country. We have free speech in this country, but you cannot abuse it." British Prime Minister Tony Blair today.
Who's gonna define what constitutes an "act of terrorism"?
And can an American version sponsored by some red-state Constitution-hater be far behind?

[Editor: ignore=off]The above mess is only possible because we insist on ignoring the truth of the Bible.
So it's our fault.
God says that we are flawed;
So it's God's fault.
...and He gives us the Book to unravel our condition.
So it rests with us to figure it out.
Yet, He also tells us that we won’t understand a thing unless we are of one of His chosen/elect.
Scratch that. It's out of our hands.
Nevertheless, if we tried to follow the rules of the Bible, we would not be in the mess we see today.
Whoa! Back up. It's on us again.
But then, you don’t want to hear that, right?
Well it's just all so darn confusing. Sounds like something the government came up with.
Posted by snark at February 16, 2006 12:32 PMBottom line, I care only about truth...and right now, the GOP has a real hard time finding it. In fact, they look at truth like a child molester looks at an orphaned street urchin.
So fuck the GOP. Kick their asses out of power, prosecute them for their crimes, and let the few honest people left in their party clean up the mess, take out the trash, and reclaim respectability.
For the GOPians here, be warned: History has shown, repeatedly and absolutely, that power premised upon lies, crime, and deceit will be brutally yanked away. It may take a while, but it will happen. Rove is going to do more harm to the GOP than anyone could have imagined when he pulled his first dirty trick. The Democrats may be weak, stupid, inept and timid, but they could never, even if strong, take down the GOP like Rove will. Its always the rotting from within that does the most harm. Ask the former Politburo members if you doubt that.
Brace yourselves, folks. Major turbulence lies ahead.
Posted by God Of War at February 16, 2006 12:49 PMIn the past week I have received telephone calls from the DNC and DCCC soliciting money....mind you I am registered unenrolled in my state although I have contributed in the past to both above organizations. I have told both I was unable at to contribute at this time. Next time they call (which will be in about a month) I will be sure to tell them that that RNC, errr I mean the "democratic" consultants need to go eff themselves and that I certainly don't want to contribute to help pay for their ridiculous advice.
Posted by emal at February 16, 2006 01:59 PMGOW: Yes, I agree. Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy 2006-08. As to your opening premise, I've been trying lately to decide how to describe, even for myself, my political bent. In most areas of life I'm a "progressive" (I want to push against the status quo and toward a better society for all), in other areas I see myself as "liberal" (universal healthcare, affordable higher education, etc.) and in some areas I'm conservative (financially, synecologically). But I've just come to the realization that above all, and particularly in these very dark days of Darth Vader republicanism, I'm a lover of the truth. Unfortunately, that may require me to change party affiliation from democrat to a third party ticket. And that makes me sad for our country and for my fellow countrymen and women. (:>
Posted by Donald Cormac at February 16, 2006 02:11 PMOver at sans-culotte.org, they have posted an excellent summary of Rep. Ron Paul's comments spoken TODAY on the House floor. Read the bold parts, then go back and read it in detail.
What you read there is about the only example of a True Conservative in Congress today who is attempting to save the nation from the idiots who merely claim to be conservatives.
Posted by pessimist at February 16, 2006 02:19 PMRep. Paul reads like he's bailing the Queen Mary with a thimble.

yeah, that's the problem with the world today; not enough public piety.
Posted by benjoya at February 16, 2006 02:58 PMI'm no longer a Democrat! Party affiliation changed, and it's darn fine! No longer will I support the Democratic party. Can they win me back? Sure. Do something, do anything! I don't think I'll have to worry about changing my affiliation for a while.
Am I still a liberal? Yep! A big liberal faggot. But the Democrats are like a monkey trying to fuck a football. Lots of frenetic activity, no results.

Call to Action: Impeachment/Out of Iraq
This effort is from Democrats.org
Please help by volunteering and circulating this call to action far and wide!
Here are some excerpts:
With your help, we want to organize grassroots teams in all 435 Congressional Districts plus 5 Delegate Districts (DC, PR, VI, GU, and AS). Please volunteer below!
Our Mission: to persuade each of our Representatives to support
1. Impeachment: Support John Conyers' Watergate-style investigation (H.Res. 635) of Bush's Iraq War lies - and immediately introduce Articles of Impeachment for Bush and Cheney
2. Getting Out of Iraq: Support John Murtha's bill to remove troops from Iraq (H.J. Res 73) and Jim McGovern's bill to end funding for the Iraq War (H.R. 4232)
The Problem: For a year, we have tried all of the traditional lobbying techniques including marches, petitions, emails, letters, calls, town hall forums, and even face-to-face meetings with our Representatives. Yet despite all this effort, not one Representative is willing to introduce Articles of Impeachment, while fewer than 30 have co-sponsored Rep. Conyers' Watergate-style investigation. On Iraq, John Murtha's bill has nearly 100 co-sponsors but not the 218 needed to force a floor vote; Jim McGovern's bill has fewer than 20 co-sponsors, even though George Bush just asked for $120 billion more for a war America does not support and cannot afford.
The Solution: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King faced far worse resistance from political leaders when they tried to end segregation in the South. So they took their movement to the streets and marched peacefully directly into the face of that resistance. We will take our inspiration from them, and bring our movement peacefully into the face of our resistance: the 435 Members of Congress who are supposed to represent us but refuse to do so. (We'll make an exception for the House Honor Roll - Members who support our three priority bills above. For those Members, we will focus on Member Meetings to persuade them to introduce Articles of Impeachment.)
There's much more info and specific volunteering/organizing ideas at the site. Follow this link: http://www.democrats.com/cd

we seriously need to examine every buying-in to bullshit memes. steinberg's piece makes good points. but, painting bush as an "affable goof" needs to be challenged. george w. bush's affability is a veneer about a milli-micron thick. here's an example of george w. bush's affability. when things don't go his own way he will do the equivalent of riding his bicycle from one side of the road to the other in front of his parents' car, preventing them from proceeding at a normal pace. this sort of affability riddles his life. no, no, what he is is a spoiled, petulant, viciously vengeful, arrogant scoundrel.
