This kind of news is depressing and maddening to me because of the same reason: this is the kind of stuff done in our collective name as "Americans."
Posted by Matt O. at February 19, 2006 10:05 PMI am not quite sure how they can imprison the soldiers for following orders of the president. To ignore the orders would be similar to being a whistleblower in this administration - you would suffer significant repercussions for not following the administrations undemocratic and unconstitutional commands.

Posted by sdfs at February 19, 2006 10:50 PM"I was appalled by the whole thing," Mora told the magazine. "It was clearly abusive and it was clearly contrary to everything we were ever taught about American values."
Despite all of their legal justifications and machinations, this is the crux of it. You can spin it any way you want, but WE ARE TORTURING PEOPLE.
Just like Hussein, and the Shah, and Hitler, and Torquemada. Torture. American has joined some pretty good company there, no?
Posted by Duckman GR at February 19, 2006 11:09 PMOn "September the Eleventh" as Chimpy so dramatically likes to call it, which was the best day of his life, every swarthy Arab and East Asian became his potential frog, and every gutless bedwetting pussy American as well as the congress showered him with firecrackers, it was the twisted little drunken sadist's wildest dream of happiness come true at last.

[Editor: ignore=off]Blown up any clinics, lately?
Posted by TIKI AL at February 20, 2006 06:13 AMInciting Islamic anger is critical for the neocons to maintain their hold on power.
This is a Pattonesque tactic the neocons have used since day one in Iraq.
Posted by Christopher at February 20, 2006 06:23 AMThe left only believes in torture when it's torturing darling little unborn babies, to death.

*****
I wouldn't be opposed to torturing your sorry ass.
Posted by God Of War at February 20, 2006 07:13 AMLooks like the position of General Counsel for one of our oldest service branches doesn't carry very much weight, or wield much power. At least not on matters of military law!
General Counsels, Inspectors General, blah, blah, blah, who listens to 'em? Certainly not real he-man warriors like von Rumsfeld of Chickenhawk & Co. Too many rules and regulations spoil the broth.
There'a a WAR to be won, goddammit!!

The New Yorker article and memo are up. A window into a delusional moral cesspit.
Impeach Cheney, Rumsfeld, Addington & Haynes. And arrest Yoo & Miller (who has already plead the military equivalent of the 5th)
Posted by AlanDownunder at February 20, 2006 07:35 AMImpeach???
Nah, war criminals deserve a little more than that.
Gallows come to mind.
Posted by God Of War at February 20, 2006 07:49 AMGOW: gallows are too drawn out and dramatic for this bunch. Besides, if they miscalculate the length of the rope, the G-forces induced by the drop causes their intestines to exit their orifice.
On the other hand, that may just be an apt punishment. Jesus, am I in a nasty mood this morning.

Shot any doctors lately, or burned down any clinics, or denied women the right to visit a clinic without your protesting against her right?
Posted by Judith at February 20, 2006 08:52 AMYou'd think someone aghast at (human) abortion would, in turn, be horrified at blowing up one year old babies anywhere, not just Iraq as well as the pain inflicted on using explosive devices on frogs as well as humans.
Instead, there seems a built-in wall that allows wingnuts the ability to only see it one way until birth, then allows them to only see it a different way.
A sort of "original sin".
Posted by Sky-Ho at February 20, 2006 09:24 AMGood point, Sky-Ho, but the arguments advanced by the various trolls here are simply mass produced talking points supporting their "team"--and they certainly could not perform the philosophical or moral analysis your comment implies.
Comments like Bendito's are supposed to constitute irrefutable proof of the Left's "hypocrisy", one of their greatest hobby horses. As though opposing torture by our military compels a position opposing medical abortion.
It's all a game to them---"beating" lib'ruls is all that motivates them. The various arguments they advance actually mean nothing to them.
