Did anyone catch the Cheney rant Letterman went off on last night? It was brutal. Good work, Dave.

Hopefully Crooks & Liars will have it later. some of us are in bed 15 minutes before Letterman comes on.

Totally aghast at the port thing. Even local yokel Gov. Erlich is shocked. What did he think Bush was, Presidential? Acting in the nation's interest? Proves my theory, that Bush ordered the attacks on 9/11. A theory most have denied out of what, that nobody that high up could have possibly ordered the murders of over three thousand? Bush has been in deep with the ragheads for years, as Michael Moore tried so hard to portray in the F9/11 movie. Republicans onced sneered at me when I declared that Bush ruined my home state of Texas, and now he's ruining the United States. Even Grover Norquist is pissed at Bush!

Me too. But then i take serious issue against most of your claims. Im sorry, as a liberal, it embarrasses me to hear that you think Bush ordered 9/11. Its ridiculous to believe that, it really is. It embarrasses me to hear you use the term "ragheads." Its ignorant and bigoted.

Dubai gets taken over by fundies, now what "ally in the war on terror" controls our port ops?

The dems should memorize Letterman's film for united "talking points". It's better than anything they have spewed lately.

Posted by TIKI AL at February 21, 2006 06:00 AM

AWC, Mal may not be ridiculous to think such thoughts about Bush. If you do a couple of searches of the Internet and do some research, you will find many people that believe Bush's finger print is in 9/11 along with others. Too many unanswered questions, and too many years of connections between the family and the Saudi Royals. I suggest reading Craig Unger in his book "House of Bush, House of Saud" for beginners.

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 06:16 AM

TIKI, yeah, Letterman was on fire last night. He has a new segment on things that Bush says like "I hope people think of me as a strategy thinker. I think strategy." Dave really hates Bush and doesn't try to hide his distain for the cabal.

I'm delighted to see the INR analyst use the word "funky" as it was intended to be used -- in the Redd Foxx sense, meaning "doesn't look or smell right at all."

Posted by Slothrop at February 21, 2006 06:40 AM

I have to say I agree that believing that George Bush "ordered" the 9/11 attacks is a bit over the top. Were it true that George Bush ordered the 9/11 attacks the results would have been drastically different. There'd probably be 19 hijackers frantically running around the World Trade Center trying to plan their "withdrawal" while slowly being bleed to death by several thousand paper cut inflicting fanatical financial types.

On a related note as it stands right now we are 163 coalition military deaths short in Iraq and Afghanistan of matching the 2985 death toll of 9/11. And that IS something that George Bush ordered.

Vengeance has no foresight. -Napoleon Bonaparte

Posted by snark at February 21, 2006 06:40 AM

Dubai Ports World is poised to take over operations at six American ports as part of a corporate sale, leaving a country with ties to the Sept. 11 hijackers with influence over a maritime industry considered vulnerable to terrorism.

The $6.8 billion sale is expected to be approved today. The contract won approval from a secretive U.S. government panel that considers security risks of foreign companies buying or investing in American industry.

Okay, I have a stupid question. Why? Are we so insufficient that we can't run our own ports and protect our own ports?

Another stupid question. Why a secretive Government panel?

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 06:46 AM

Judith, AWC, Mal - yes, there are unanswered questions, and we may not get to the bottom of it until 2063 when all The President's Men are dust, and incapabile of shame when their ineptness and incompetence comes to light. (I think HSA and Katrina were just tips of the iceberg for this administration's utter inability to govern.)

But I have a hard time believing that Bush in some capacity ordered or allowed the terrorist attcks. It ranks right up there with theories, now debunked, that Roosevelt 'allowed' the Attack on Pearl Harbor. There are a lot of things that Bush's Administration should be reviled for, but conspiracy theories don't do us any favors.

Posted by idiosynchronic at February 21, 2006 06:53 AM

Snark, I don't think Bush planned it at all (he couldn't plan his way out of a paper bag). However, I think he was aware of the planned attack. I would imagine the planners kept him out of the loop. That I will give him. Remember when no one in this Country could fly, except the Bin Laden family. By-the-way, where is Osama Bush? Have you looked under the WH furniture?

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 06:59 AM

By-the-way, aren't we near the end of the timeline for the release of all of the Kennedy papers through the FOI Act?

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 07:22 AM

$6.8 fucking billion. That is 3.5 days in Iraq. Why can we not buy the ports? Why can't they be govt owned?

Even local news was talking about the idiocy of this decision. Then some blah, blah, blah about how our ports are safe.

Now - where are the talking points from the left about how this admin is not protecting us - as they have so promised on so many occassions. To be tough on terism, remember, dumb ass Bush - he is supposed to protect us. That is why we must give up all of our civil liberties, civil rights, independent thinking and common sense.

You know, re: the WH involvement in 911...never was I one for conspiracy theories. I have seen a lot of pictures and video and read a ton and there are too many unanswered questions. I could list them, we could go down that road, but it is way too much. I believe that the truth will come out.

Many 911 families are demanding answers and many behind the conspiracy theories are survivors. They were there, they saw, they lost. The WH still refuses to release documents re: 911 and there are just too many "coincidences".

If they did not "plan" it - they certainly let it happen. They knew it was coming and GW stayed on his longest ever vacation in the hx of a presidency. He stayed in that classroom for what was it 8 minutes after the first plane hit...Secret Service should have rushed him out of there to protect him - why did they not?

Too many questions.

Posted by Anjha at February 21, 2006 07:25 AM

Today's a real ugly day for this crap - there's even a Kos thread on HST and how he was looking for (& may have found) evidence of a conspiracy.

Incompetence, Incompetence, Incompetence. Did this administration let it happen through inattention? Yes. Did they consciously let it happen? No.

Anyone sayin' otherwise is looking to sell you a spot in an angry mob action.

Posted by idiosynchronic at February 21, 2006 07:44 AM

Anjha, they were more concerned about Cheney than Bush evidently.

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 07:45 AM

Snark, I don't think Bush planned it at all (he couldn't plan his way out of a paper bag).

True. If they had planned 9-11 they would have launched suicide attacks with gay muslim midgets in clown cars tossing birth control pills, viles of embryos, womens brassiers and Darwin's "Origins" into fundamentalist christian church parking lots before ramming the sanctuary doors while screaming, "I'm getting me 47 tiny virgins, ALLAH U AKBAR!" then detonating their tiny little confetti bombs. I'm not sure how they would have hijacked planes with gay muslim midgets. I don't think there are zipper pulls on the inside of luggage. But that's where our pretzledent stands out. He's got this strategy thing down.

Id, maybe an angry mob action is what is needed - well not violence and not mob mentality - but an angry march through the streets. If any of these conspiracy theories lead to a rise up against this insanity, then maybe they serve their purpose.

Ran across this article. The writer is wondering where the fuck the left is???? Why do they not rise up?

"Nothing made a more lasting impression during my journey through America than the semi-comatose state in which I found the American left."

He speaks of the fact that there is no comparable left to the insanely mobilized and malicious right. Why not?!

I ask the same question.

$6.8 fucking billion. That is 3.5 days in Iraq. Why can we not buy the ports? Why can't they be govt owned?

They will be government owned - by the UAE, though, not us. Well, unless someone listens to reason and refuses to let this deal go through. I'm with you, though, it seems like those jobs securing the ports should pay well, and we should have U.S. citizens filling them.

Posted by ann at February 21, 2006 08:16 AM

Posted by at February 21, 2006 08:24 AM

Ann,

I doubt they are planning to import all their employees from Dubai or other Arab nations. In fact I'd imagine not a whole lot is going to change personnel wise as a result of this deal.

I do however think that if you're going to put American port security in the hands of a state owned business it would be best if that business was owned by our state.

Posted by snark at February 21, 2006 08:25 AM

Why all the secrecy behind this if it is such a good idea?

Posted by Judith at February 21, 2006 08:29 AM

BushCorp is incompetent in governing. THAT is how 9/11 happened. THAT is why IraNq is a quagmire. It's why Katrina was such a megabitch. It's why the trade and budget deficits are soaring like the Alps.

Incompetence. It's the reason for the season.

Posted by God Of War at February 21, 2006 08:38 AM

Judith says

Are we so insufficient that we can't run our own ports and protect our own ports? Another stupid question. Why a secretive Government panel?

Those are great questions and inquiring minds want to know. Redd over at Firdoglake has a great summary of this issue. Redd tackles many angles of this complicated situation...should read it if you haven't.

I have some random thoughts on this.
-Appears to be many typical Bushco mo elements (secret gov't panel)...reminds me of that Secret Cheney Energy Task Force.
-Corporate cronyism angle is clearly involved here too... Snow has crony relationship to former DWP CEO,
-Claims that Bush himself out of the loop on this decision (who really does run the WH?).
-Racist claims hurled at people posing questions/concerns/and wanting to know more about this deal...that is really unfair.

Lastly, I wonder what besides money might compel people to take this deal. What does the UAE have that the US needs or wants so badly? The UAE has something very valuable right now in their country that the US is using....Air bases. Could that be a reason for this deal to be made so quickly?

Posted by emal at February 21, 2006 09:19 AM

I think it unlikely that GWB had anything to do with the 911 attacks. He is an empty suit and is only told what he needs to know. What I think is highly likely is that the official explanation concerning this atrocity is nonsense.

I refuse to speculate about the conspiratorial details, but one thing is certain. Video analysis of the total collapse of WTC7, a 48 story steel girder building, not hit by any plane, and only suffering debris damage to one corner with isolated office fires, clearly reveals demolition charge (squib) detonatations just prior to collapse. After these detonations, the building collapses at a free fall rate.

I don't need structural engineers to tell me that a building that falls at free fall rate, falls with no resistance. Clearly, we have been sold a bill of goods and they're rotten.

http://www.st911.org/ For a scientific, peer reviewed analysis. If you can get past the cognative dissonance that limits your reasoning power that is.

Posted by brisa at February 21, 2006 09:47 AM

This just makes me chuckle:

Flip Flop: Bush was against funding renewable energy before he was for it. PR can change a lot of things apparently - even Bush's mind.

Posted by ann at February 21, 2006 10:03 AM

brisa, On that comment, I wonder how the fires could continue to burn so hot in Towers #1 & 2 after collapse. Jet fuel would have burned real quick. Infared scanning done afterwards showed the heat index up around C-4 levels.
No doubt that building 7 was an insurance scam demolition. Towers 1 & 2 I do have doubts.

Posted by bbtb at February 21, 2006 10:09 AM

I have seen the video of the owner of building 7 saying "pull-it". (His name escapes me.) His reasoning was that it was so damaged and that there was so much damage in the area and that all of the people had been evacuated that pulling it (demo it) would make the most sense. Also of curiosity was that Guiliani's emergency planning offices and other govt offices of significance were in tower 7. (I can research & find the links if anyone requests it.)

Also, looking at the falling of all of the towers, they all came down like pancakes, like planned demos.

We just watched the video made by the French filmakers (Jules Naudet) - they were the ones doing the docu on firefighters and were the only ones to get video of the first plane hitting. Also, they have video inside the first tower hit (which was the second to fall) before it fell, during the confusion, very powerful.

Abu Gonzales just held a press conference to discuss the newest attempt at raising poll numbers.

Of course he was not at liberty to discuss anything about it other than they are bad guys and we were saved.

I am concerned that the more public disapproval increases, the more bad things are going to happen. The admin needs to keep us afraid so that they can stay in "control".

As hard as I try to remain positive and optimistic, as hard as I try to believe that we will rise above this and take our Country back, it is very difficult today.

I believe that it will take a century to regain any credibility or moral standing in this world unless we prove that we are a Nation of Laws and impeach these motherfuckers.

He called it a smear campaign and blamed it all on Brown. However, when asked for proof...guess what he had none.

He then went on some stupid tangent about Bush doing coke. Chrissy actually challenged the clown on it and was forced to back down.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three men were charged in Ohio with conspiracy to kill people and planning attacks against U.S. forces overseas, a federal law enforcement official said on Tuesday.

The official said the men were involved in a conspiracy to "recruit people for jihad overseas." He said they were also training people how to use improvised explosive devices on U.S. forces in Iraq.

The men, two of whom were arrested in Toledo, were charged in Ohio and were expected to appear in court later in the day.

Talk about breathtaking idiocy, Bush is finally prepared to use his first veto if Congress creates any bill to block or delay the deal with the UAE to run some of our major ports. This just after Frist said he would introduce legislation to put the deal on hold. I'm guessing we'll see the Republican Party further distance itself from the WH over this one.

Posted by ann at February 21, 2006 01:51 PM

maybe the trolls can tell us the current talking points for the dubai port thingy. last i heard, the WH was alternating between ''it's crucial that we give these security responsibilities to foreign socialist entities" and "we know more than we need to about terrorist financing, so dubai's stonewalling isn't endangering anyone"

but that was, like, sunday - i'm sure they've settled on a strategery by now.

Posted by benjoya at February 21, 2006 01:53 PM

this port thing is very curious. I wonder who is set up to make the big money here? Halliburton? Some Carlyle Group subsidiary?
A Saudi group? Why would Bush, at 40%, even consider something with such a short political fuse? His reaction to the furor, "veto", sounds very handy/rehearsed, as if he was ready for the loud outcry. There is definitely something fishy about this.

Oaklander, I will ignore anyone except those who take my username and post under it. That is NOT ACCEPTABLE. There are a few things on this Blog that you do not do, and one is you do not post under another person's username, satire or not. Dipshit crossed the line with me.

GDP IS PROJECTED TO BE OVER 6% FOR 1st QUARTER!!!!!

dipshit! Long time no see. How is Les Crow Brasserie doing? The Salmon Crow-quettes on you menu were a bit much, but still a nice presentation. PS: You have your head up your ass on GDP.

I doubt they are planning to import all their employees from Dubai or other Arab nations. In fact I'd imagine not a whole lot is going to change personnel wise as a result of this deal.

They will act as a management company. I see no problem with the deal. If you're going to say "no" to foreign management of ports, fine. But if it is only a Middle Eastern country that is blocked then I have some real concerns. What next, El Al can't fly in our airspace? The UAE has to give up the hotel chains they own? Where do you stop? Let's profile more ragheads in airports? Focus on anyone just the right shade of brown?

And I'm not really sure where people are getting the idea that 911 was financed by Dubai. That is nonsense. Al Qaeda was financed by Hawala and hawaladars.

Phidipides, what I still don't have an answer to is why we need a foreign company to manage our ports.

I Saw the Australian documentary “ Abu Graib” on link TV, Amy Goodman mentioned on her show, last Friday, that it would be on “link TV”( 9410) on dish that night.
I watch it and others since. This president whose tries to tell us that GOD talk to him seems to be another GOD for profit’s liar like Robertson! I believe that he created the so call insurgents all over the world. This stupid animal, has started WW3, without understand what he started. His so call axel of evil, start the problem we are facing today. He did push all to protect themselves from the all mighty Bush the none warriors.

That channel tell you about global warming, Corporate media in-bedded with the army that lied about this war like Judy Millers was mention as one journalist who has no integrity, because she was a mouth peace for the White House.
It also shows you, with translated Arabs TV. What we see here is nothing like the rest of the world sees. They show women and children hurt by our DU bombs, they show the radiation on our tanks what this administration does not want you to know. They show reality, what all the channels in the US does not want you to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every soldier exposed in Iraq as the population, will have to face more cancer and children born malformed. That the administration will fight to deny!
Is the USA so dumb that they want their children die for Bush? Because …………………….
