Comments: Watch Out Below - Bush Falls Below 35%

"So now, will the Democrats come out and play finally?"

I wish I could say a resounding "yes", but I doubt it. There have been too many opportunities to do just that and they didn't. Why would I think any differently now?

Posted by Judith at February 27, 2006 05:11 PM

I'll be happy when the local tv newspeople and local newspapers pick up on this and run with it, but unfortunately I don't see it happening. I have lost so much faith in a large portion of the American public in the past few years that I despair of ever regaining that faith!

Oh, oh, oh, shit...can someone please hand me a warm washcloth or some kleenex!

Posted by bbtb at February 27, 2006 05:39 PM

My view has not changed. The rabid anti-Clinton camp had a 29% support base. No matter what question was asked, the lowest that the anti-Clinton position got was 29%. And these people were rabid. They still are. The Rove-Republicans are falling off the wagon, the same way that Reagan Democrats mostly flocked back to Clinton. This, however, does not mean that they will vote for ANY Democrat the next time out.

Posted by buck at February 27, 2006 05:43 PM

I have a brilliant idea. Since Chimpy is claiming all these wartime powers, why doesn't congress just rescind the stupid authorazation they passed that is the root of all this bullshit. Boom, just like that Jr is back on the same status as he was pre-911.

Oh yeah, I forgot. We have a lickspittle rubber-stamp of a congress.

Me? I blame Republicans. For everything. If the toilet stops up, I blame Republicans. Soon, everybody will do this.

"So now, will the Democrats come out and play finally?"

The Democratic leadership is so busy hunting for a magic formula that will transform the jelly in their backs into Calcium. Don't even think about holding your breath in anticipation of any more of these deadbeats finally waking up and realizing that they have a conscience.

Posted by Mike at February 27, 2006 05:52 PM

Stop, stop, stop.

They are coming out to play.

Holy fuck. (Here is my bi-weekly get off our ass and do something, post.)

MSM does not cover the Dems fights. They are fighting.

This guy deserves a medal!

I asked Bernie Sanders recently why the Congress did not just shut down Gitmo. His response was as expected - Republicans will not allow the legislation on the floor.

The Republicans do not allow legislation or amendments or even the Dems to participate in conferences. MSM does not tell America the truth about this.

I have all Dems. 2 Dem Senators and a Dem Rep - but they hear from me constantly. If you live where there are Repukes, let them hear from you.

bbtb went to a Prog Dem meeting. Yeah! Action.

Did you see whats-his-name-Repuke (R. NY think it was King) on MTP when Tim asked him why the Repukes voted down all of the Dem legislation on port security over the last 5 years? He squirmed like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar. Russert, of course, did not press him.

The light is shining on the darkness. The more that they know that we are watching the more that they will act - including the media.

The more we call and write the media they are going to have to cover this shit.

We move America. We the people. We are a Representative Democracy. We are the governement. We do not have leaders. We have Representatives.

As much study and typing and posting on blogs helps us to understand it will not change the public perception.

When was the last time anyone here thanked Rep Conyers for holding his basement hearings and publishing the truth Doctrine Constitution in Crisis?

When was the last time anyone thanked Louise Slaughter for her report America for Sale? (pdf)

Really. When they do good, let's let them know - the Reps, the media, our local groups. When they fuck up, let's let 'em know.

Action is what counts. We cannot afford apathy. We are in the fight of our lives. The future of the planet is at stake. This is way too important.

You know, I spent five of my twenty-one years as a professional as an instructor for the Coast Guard and National Defense.

While I was doing this, I should have written a mandatory one-week course on how to avoid George W. Bush. I believe it would have saved more lives.

Posted by tempus at February 27, 2006 06:21 PM

Cover of Harpers Mag has the case for impeachment - thanks to Conyers.

They are coming out to play.

Posted by Anjha at February 27, 2006 06:51 PM

So now, will the Democrats come out and play finally

They can't. They're not invited. For example, check out the guests on Meet the Press yesterday.

Today's "balanced" media is a panel with three raving right-wingers like Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes and William Safire, and a reporter to represent the "liberal" side. That's how it is.

Forty years of being used as a whipping boy by the right-wingers has cowed the press to the point that they still act like America thinks G.W. Bush is a heroic and popular president. He's not and his approval ratings show it.

Posted by Pug at February 27, 2006 07:08 PM

And during the height of the Lewinsky scandal, what was Clinton's approval rating? About twice what Bush's is now, wasn't it? Oh, my don't you longer for the simpler days....when a lack of honesty and integrity only meant a blow job?

Posted by ann at February 27, 2006 07:28 PM

I'm glad people are finally coming around to realizing the ineptness and corrupt politics of the Republican party. Twenty years from now, I fear people will look back on these days, Iraq, and the Republican "cut taxes and spend" policies much as we look at Nixon and Vietnam. Yeah, there will be a core group of Republicans who will stand by Bush as they stand by Nixon, but the general population won't.

Posted by Mr. K. at February 27, 2006 07:39 PM

Could the tide be changing? Even thepent-postis calling out the top military progandist for lies about the Iraq civil war.

Posted by smooth at February 27, 2006 07:49 PM

The dems are playing, they're PLAYING IT SAFE. They voted to empower the chimp, so they did'nt appear un-patriotic, then when Bushco gets in trouble, they SIT BACK, and hope for self-destruction miracles.

We need to see more shutting down the senate moments. They better JUMP on this port fiasco, or they risk losing any credability.

Posted by TIKI AL at February 27, 2006 08:03 PM

Read that number several times and then ask yourself if your assumptions about his bedrock base of support are still intact.

Pshaw! Mere months ago, you were telling us Bush's floor was about 35%, while some of us were insisting it was more like 31.

He's still got room.

Posted by dj moonbat at February 27, 2006 08:23 PM

DJ syas he can hit 31, I still say 29 is possible. If Bush is in the twenties or even the low thirties near election day,it will have a substantial impact on the election. Seats now considered safe for the GOP will be up for grabs.

Anjha I agree with you. I have refuse to watch corporate media but C-span, freespeechTV and new discovered of LINK TV. I like Mosaic, Real Arabic TV, what they tell their peoples of what is happening in Iraq. It is a lot different that what is shown in America. No they are not calling us bad names, but are showing the blood and despair of the populace that if it was showing here this war would stop.

I saw the Conyers basement hearings, and have signed on 2 of his petitions. It was questioned why are you not fighting back? It was explained by one congresswoman that yes they have try to get conference with the media, rent a room and where stood up as media never show up.
Our media are just pushing this administration agenda because they are own by big corporations who care less about us. Yes there are some good journalists, but they do have to conform if they want to earn a living. The like of O’Reilly was even mocked on today link, on International dateline from Australia.

I did see earlier that even Rush radio is loosing listeners
(Limbaugh drew a 4.1 last month. This month he dropped to a 3.3.) (Crooks and liars).

I sign up to Impeach Bush on the first petition. It was only in the hundred at the time.

Ann I agree. Bush has classified anything that could embarrass his action. Like Jon Stewart said last week that Clinton should have done the same thing for his “bleb”. I laugh so hard (all channels are so afraid of fines).

I saw Bush show up today on the governors meetings, and after a few words start to ramble about Iraq. It was another pathetic show.

I am an independent, because I have never felt that politicians really care for us. I do believe that it is time to amend a few part of the constitution.

1) Let’s go for the majority votes wins
2) No more extravagated primaries
3) Limited the election to 6 months
4) Limits on both Senate and congressional turns to 2 terms
5) Limits the Supreme Court tenures to 10 years
6) Any laws enact by our politicians should be by 75 percent, and cannot be change.

Lets really think about forcing a big change.

Posted by not stupid at February 27, 2006 10:05 PM

Muckdog, help us understand why this is a good thing. If the wave of violence in Iraq shows that we are winning, doesn't dispproval by the majority of the American people show that we support the president in everyting he does?

Down, after all, is up.

Posted by Repack Rider at February 27, 2006 11:11 PM

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I already got a present I've been waiting for since...forEVAH.

And that is Bush's numbers. Finally down to 34 percent. I say, about time.

No, I'm not going to tell you how old I am. But I will share with you that every single one of my childhood tormentors/abusers are now either DEAD or in insititutions for the criminally insane, or prison.

He who laughs last, laughs best.

The days of the Republican fascist swine are numbered. I can feel the earth moving beneath my feet.

Im being pessemistic...
Every % drop in the polls for Bush increase the risk of a terrorist atack in the US. The rationale being that thats the only way left to rally people around him and get back in control.

Does he have the rescources to "organise" an attack and make it look like somebody else did it... of course. Op Northwoods anyone?

Posted by at February 28, 2006 12:19 AM

Happy Birthday, John!

As for the terror attack fear of ouor ananymous commenter, I tend to agree. Bu$hCo is getting that desperate, and power must be maintained at all costs. The little incident I wrote about yesterday is only the warm-up.

Can't spell worth a damn this morning! Need stronger coffee!!!

Posted by pessimist at February 28, 2006 02:56 AM

Fun with statistics: the population of America is 295,734,134, making 34 percent come to about 100,549,605 people. Even if you remove children and the mentally ill from that number, it’s still ridiculously high.

Still, it's moving in the right direction.

Posted by Michael Miller at February 28, 2006 05:52 AM

Maybe Unka Karl will plant a bug (a la his Texas days) in the Oval Office and blame it on Howard Dean . . . THAT'LL change the subject.

Posted by Doofus at February 28, 2006 06:49 AM

It's hard getting too giddy; these people are soooo changeable in their shallow, unexamined political views, and as Mr. Miller rightly observes, we have such an enormous albatross of Reactionary Shitbrains to deal with in BushAmerica that actual "progress" is probably impossible. (My words, not his).

But these are definitely fun numbers, I just wish some real political consequences could follow from them.

And Anjha, you're the best defender of my Dems that I've seen! You encourage me. Thanks.

Posted by euzoius at February 28, 2006 07:11 AM

Doofus, knowing the arrogance of this pResident, there probably is already a "bug" in the Oval Office. Bush wouldn't want a word of his brilliancy missed for furture historians. Yes, he is that stupid.

Michael,

If you remove the mentally ill, Bush wouldn't have any support.

Posted by smooth at February 28, 2006 11:08 AM

90% of the reason for "media complacency" is the same reason The Pioneers like Bush so much: tax breaks and deregulation; the same thing that gave Raygun his "teflon". Theyre a bunch of muckdogs who will stop masturbating over thier own self interest and "the virtue of selfishness" about the same time alot of the base stops believing in the Rapture.

Posted by jondee at February 28, 2006 01:17 PM

Almost more noteworthy than the 34 percent seems to me the fact that 51 percent of Americans don't think their President cares about them at all. That's more telling than the disapproval rate, which is a circumstantial result of Dubai, civil war talk in Iraq and Katrina. That
51 percent is what Dems should be focusing on, and that’s where they can really capitalize with their ethics campaign in the midterm elections.
