I love that..."a sheepish party that is being led to slaughter"....god willing...
He also said today that he's confident that Osama will be caught.
I think he's read The Power of Positive Thinking one too many times.
Posted by ann at March 1, 2006 08:38 AMBush is in it too far. His presidency is based on projecting what they wish to be true (or outright falsehoods), rather than what is true. Suddenly being honest would bring the remains of his presidency crashing down.
Posted by CA Pol Junkie at March 1, 2006 08:58 AMVARGAS: What is the policy if, in fact, a civil war should break out or the sectarian violence continues? Are you willing to sacrifice American lives to get the Sunnis and the Shiites to stop killing each other?
BUSH: I don't buy your premise that there's going to be a civil war.
This kind of response is what drives me crazy. Instead of being a real leader and answering a question with a straight forward answer, we get cute. Answer the fucking question Bush. It's not a difficult question, yes or no.
I hate to admit that when his party holds the Congress and Supreme Court, he does have ample political capital. Until an election where his party gets its comeuppance.
Popular capital on the other hand - he ain't got it.

And it's such a patronizing response. It's "Vargas' premise" as if no one has ever mentioned it before. And he just doesn't "buy" the premise. It's like Bill O'Reilly or Tucker Carlson when confronted with a reality, they say they just don't see it because they disagree.
Posted by ann at March 1, 2006 09:22 AMAnn, and then the media doesn't hold his feet to the fire by demanding an answer. And yes, it is patronizing response, but he comes by that sort of response naturally. His Father was/is the same way, patronizing. I dream of some reporter saying "well you arrogant fuck. Answer the question."
Posted by Judith at March 1, 2006 09:46 AMDumbya asked Vargas what planet she thought he was on. Vargas replied, "Why Uranus of course, Your Royal Highass."
Posted by red_neck_repub at March 1, 2006 10:25 AMI dream of some reporter saying "well you arrogant fuck. Answer the question."
Sadly, I don't see it happening. The press is too whipped by Rove's pay to play plan of keeping access for only those who toe the party line. I would imagine it must be frustrating as hell to be a journalist in this time.
Posted by ann at March 1, 2006 10:43 AMA REAL reporter would have jumped across the table and shot him full of sodium pentacost.
Posted by TIKI AL at March 1, 2006 10:55 AMLet me prepare you all for a time in the near future when an undeniable civil war rages in Iraq.
Bush - "We had no reason to believe there would be a civil war. Our intelligence was flawed."
Followed by :
Bush - "We're going to have to take your remaining Civil Rights to close up those intelligence gaps and protect you. It's a different world since 911.... Heh Heh"
Posted by mpaker at March 1, 2006 11:20 AMI'm loving the presidential honor guard! Looks like they grabbed those guys off the street and put them in some uniforms. I wonder how many times the SS checked them all to make sure none of them had any bullets (or even a functioning weapon).
Posted by snark at March 1, 2006 11:23 AMJust like they (WH and DOD) were receiving reports from the intelligence community in Fall 2003 that a local Sunni insurgency was underway, you can bet Nero Jr and von Rumsfeld have been receiving intelligence reports that a civil war has started in Iraq.
For goodness sake, the WaPo is reporting that Sunni/Shi'ia ethnic cleansing is underway--an undeniable sign of modern civil war in ethnically mixed countries.
Bushco's response: continual lying and "premise-denying".
Posted by euzoius at March 1, 2006 11:50 AMBush is nothing but an embarassment waiting to happen every time he opens his pie hole.
"I'm using it to spread freedom..."

Vargas said "IF, in fact, a civil war should break out...", then what would you do? You do not have to "buy" the premise, you ignorant bastard. When contingency planning, you do not say, "Well, since X is not happening now, I will not prepare for it." The question started with "IF" for several reasons, one of the main ones being so that you would not weasle out of answering the question. Answering a "hypothetical" only means you answered the question and have given some thought to something that may happen, not that you necessarily "agree" with the question. Obviously, Dubia-ya has been studying at the "Scott McClellan School of Non-Answereing, Subject Changing, and Word Parsing for Politicians Who Think Americans Are Ignorant."
Posted by oppressmenot at March 1, 2006 12:12 PMI'm "speading freedom", there's a "strong economy", you need me to "protect" you and "provide security"...yada, yada, yada. Those tired, old, worn-out Republican talking points sound as trite and banal now as ever, more so. What a moron. If you are keeping us so "secure", why are you constanly telling us to be scared? It's a 'code red" (no wait, that's only during the Democratic National Convention and when politically advantageous to Republi-bots), "they are out there and mean to do us harm", we're in "imminent danger", give up your basic rights to privacy and freedom of speech because the danger is so acute,... The main danger is from deluded, theocratic, power-crazed, self-serving corpratists like you! You are a threat to democracy, free speech, open and transparent government, election integrity, decency, and honesty. You lied us into a war, you spy on us like we're the enemy, you support regimes like the Saudi's and fly the Bin Ladin family out of the country while US airspace is closed during the most horrific attact ever on US soil. What a disgrace. The most non-American, unpatriotic person I can think of is the president of the USA, and it pains me to say that.
Posted by oppressmenot at March 1, 2006 12:32 PMNo civil war? Ethnic cleansing, maybe? I'm not sure but, damn, if someone knocks on your door with a rocket launcher on their choulder and tells you to get out of your house by the next morning, something kinda big is going down.

I don't buy the delusion and detachment argument. You can't excuse this by claiming he is mentally challenged. He is lying. He knows he has created a mess and he is scared shitless he will have to face the consequences, so he is willing to sacrifice as many troops and Iraqis and billions of dollars as it takes to save his own ass. He knows he has no plan for civil war, aside form thanking all the families for their sacrifices for our freedom. If he was delusional and detached he would not make "surprise" visits to places like Afghanistan. He knows he is hated worldwide. Why do you think he has the big suit coat on to conceal the body armor?
Posted by coal_train at March 1, 2006 02:56 PMcoal-train: You're right about the suprise visit and the body armor. Why doesn't he just wear his darth vader outfit? Then, his head would be protected too and we wouldn't have to pay for 5,000 body guards. Or maybe he should move around in a personal mover with bullet-proof plexiglass? His answers are always non-answers - which is lying. When asked a question, first, deny. second, deny with venom. third, oh, that, I don't know anything about that. fourth, it's a good plan. what a putz. Moron for president - of the island malta.
