Considering Ms. Rice's sexual orientation is an open secret in DC, do you honestly think she'd stand a chance at getting past the primaries?
Posted by tbob at March 1, 2006 10:27 AMSince Rice is really a southern white male Christain governor incognito, I think "she" will run.
Posted by TIKI AL at March 1, 2006 10:29 AMMy guess is that it has more to do with the increasing likelihood that Cheney isn't going to serve out his full term, than with Condi secretly plotting for '08. She may simply have the Vice Presidency thrust on her by Rove.
Posted by kid_rocka at March 1, 2006 10:31 AMConsidering Ms. Rice's sexual orientation is an open secret in DC, do you honestly think she'd stand a chance at getting past the primaries?
You mean, because she's been doing Bushie? If you're alluding that she might be a lesbian, it's that don't ask, don't tell thing. But what's going to stand in her way with the GOP is that a) she's a woman and b)she's black. I don't care how evolved the party has become (ha) or about any notions of compassionate conservatism (oxymoron.) There are still way too many good old boys in the GOP.
Posted by ann at March 1, 2006 10:40 AMIt'd be cool if there were a GOP Senator named Beans or Benes who wanted the VP slot in 2008.
Rice and Beans '08.
Posted by muckdog at March 1, 2006 10:45 AMI can easily see suburban and city GOPers annointing Mrs. Bush, arghh, I meant Condi Rice their candidate in 2008, but in rural, red state, southern America? Not a snowball's chance in hell.
The roots of racism run too deep.
Posted by Christopher at March 1, 2006 10:54 AMI think it is a clever ploy by Rove to have Democrats nominate Hillary for 2008 and then soundly defeat her with a white male Republican candidate.
Posted by suresh at March 1, 2006 11:02 AMMaybe that's why Condi's showing us all her exercise routine on TV - the softer side.
Posted by pam mcg at March 1, 2006 11:31 AMI think it is a clever ploy by Rove to have Democrats nominate Hillary for 2008 and then soundly defeat her with a white male Republican candidate.
And for his next act of magic, Rove will make the Mississippi run backward.
Posted by Christopher at March 1, 2006 11:31 AMJesus, GOP, at least give me a fucking challenge.
Rice destroyed in two words:
"Mushroom Clouds."
Yeah, run one of the architects of the worst foreign policy debacle in 30 years. Please. I dare you.
Posted by God Of War at March 1, 2006 11:33 AMI think she's running...As I was driving to work here in Memphis, TN, I passed a car that had a bumper sticker that read:
"Condi '08" beside a "W The President" bumper sticker.
The driver was a 50+ year old white woman....
Posted by SoulCatcher at March 1, 2006 11:51 AMRice won't get past SC. The fundamentalists will eat her alive.
Posted by Ga6thDem at March 1, 2006 11:58 AMRice is such a lightweight, the Republicans would be foolish to go with her. She had no business being National Security Advisor and even less business being Secretary of State.
She'd make President Logan on 24 look like Attila the Hun.
Posted by DrewL Bucket at March 1, 2006 11:59 AMsex has nothing to do with it. Skin color might. She'd lose every red state. Besides.....IF she ran...all the Dems would have to do is replay her 9/11 Panel testimony over and over and over....remember 'BinLaden determined to strike in America' was just a "historical document". Then of course, there's always the "Mushroom Cloud".

*****
I'll finish the post-ellipse:
...and a complete fucking idiot, a kool-aid drinking bitch possessing the intellectual capacity of a 3 year-old.
(My apologies to 3 year-olds everywhere.)
Fuck the GOP and fuck everyone who supports the traitors.
Posted by God Of War at March 1, 2006 12:29 PMIf Elisabeth Bumiller wishes to support Condi, let it be. Most Americans of any stripe realize that Ms. Rice is a marshmallow, and although she would be an infinite improvement on the Chimperor, she would be just another sad example of the the American people for those who have not been assimilated.
Posted by tempus at March 1, 2006 12:39 PMNo matter who the Democrats annoint in 2008 (Clinton, Warner, Feingold, or Gore) any of them would destroy the hapless Condosleaza in a debate.
This woman redefines the term "lightweight."
Posted by Christopher at March 1, 2006 12:41 PMYou know, the only time the GOP backs an African-American candidate is in a sure-lose election (think IL against Obama) or in a state in which African-Americans really have a lot of sway.
If COndi runs, is it an admission that they don't have a chance in hell of beating us?
Posted by emptywheel at March 1, 2006 12:46 PMNot sure how much enthusiasm there really would be for a black, female, lesbo(?), douche bag whose pea brain couldn’t grasp the importance of a report entitled, “Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the U.S.” The Repugs and their most ardent supporters are mostly bigoted white guys with usually very compliant and subservient wives.
Posted by red_neck_repub at March 1, 2006 01:09 PM"I believe it was titled Bin Laden determined to attack in the United States, Senator."
She's not a politician which in and of itself isn't a disqualifier, but she's neither bright or personable enough.
Nevertheless she'll get G.O.P. establishment support through the primaries if only to present the party as something that actually looks like America.

Having Alan Keyes in IL was the best entertainment in years. I especially enjoyed seeing the downstate racist Republicans having to support him - it was that pained looked similar to what McCain looks like when he supports Bush.
If COndi runs, is it an admission that they don't have a chance in hell of beating us?
Good point. They won't elect her (female/black) so why not use her? Then they can label the Dems as racist and sexist and look compassionate and then turn around and nominate another white guy next time, like with Harriet Meirs, "See, we tried to nominate a woman, but you wouldn't support her."
Steve, tbob and the rest have provided very good reasons that Rice will not run for President.
And as for Bumiller "knowing something other people don't," she will make a lot more money off that book than the Times pays her & her husband (remember, the Times wants reporters to feel that the prestige of the job compensates for low salaries).
Oh yeah, and Bumiller could just be an idiot.
Posted by Redbeard at March 1, 2006 02:55 PMBut what's going to stand in her way with the GOP is that a) she's a woman and b)she's black
and c)she's unmarried.
If Condi is positioning for a run, it is to take Hillary off at the knees. Whether this is part of broad Republican gambit, or a personal calculation on Condi's part, I can't say. My two cents---
Posted by suds at March 1, 2006 03:42 PMI distinctly (?) remember bush appointing Rice to a special Iraq task, saying something like "I call her my fixer-upper."
I have searched Google in the ways I can imagine, and cannot find it. It would be nice to track that task - but not as fun as Karen Hugh's current job.
A chronology from that assignment would be devastating.
