Bob Casey will be asked about his position on the South Dakota abortion law. He had better say he's against it.

The sad story of Katrina continues. What I want to know is what in the hell do they mean "funding ran out?"

The official door-to-door search of New Orleans ended on 3 October with a death toll of 972.
Since then, 131 more bodies have been found. Some by officials, some by horror-struck friends and family members, some by insurance inspectors.
Firefighters continued to search homes for a few more months but had to stop in December when funding ran out.

Thousands missing

Meanwhile, state officials continued to slog through the thousands of reports of missing people.

Stem cell issue is causing headaches for GOP and for one Jim Talent, Republican Senator from Missouri. Seems Talent has now decided he likes stem cell research and has modified his position. He is also in a dead heat for re-election. So much for your convictions hey Jim.

I suggest that Republicans are in a tough spot. Some are beginning to worry they will be hurt in November's elections if they don't pass a stem cell bill. Bush has promised to veto any bill expanding federal funding for it, but Specter thinks he has enough votes to override Bush's veto. I certainly hope so.

By-the-way, since the SD decision, 10 other states are now considering limiting or banning a woman's right to abortion.

Why are we enduring this ignoble, incompetent, and rather crazy administration?

Why are we tolerating the lies(Iraq, et al), thefts(Federal Pensions raided),sodomies(Gannon/Guckert exposed),and assorted idiocies(9/11, dogs in Ghandi Shrine, nuclear India, snubbing allies, Guantanemo, Abu Ghraib, Bagram, et ux, ad nauseum)?

A complete investigation of this administration is not only needed, but urgently!

Let there be an accounting of the failures, lies, deceits, and disasters, let the public know

I hope you are happy muck cuz god knows we can't "afford" to take care of these types of people, they should fend for themselves right!

It took 3 hours yesterday at the VA satellite clinic for them to draw my blood. It was all older vets there.
Satellite clinics are maxed out with older Vets and the Iraqi Vets have to go to the main VA hospitals.
Needless to say, Vetterans are pissed. I have not heard that much chatter on how mad they are at the B/C cabal for lies about VA funding and medicare/medicaid.

Bbtb, I don't know a lot of veterans, but the one in my own family (WWII) hates Bush with a passion. I have spoken with a couple of others, and they will not vote for Bush because he lied to get us into a war, and that to them, is unforgivable.

Who is the guy that is running on an Impeachment platform, saying that if elected he will introduce Impeachment Articles? By-the-way, what is happening with the spying scandal? Remember this?

STEPHANOPOULOS: You know, if the president did break the law or circumvent the law, what’s the remedy?

SPECTER: Well, the remedy could be a variety of things. A president — and I’m not suggesting remotely that there’s any basis, but you’re asking, really, theory, what’s the remedy? Impeachment is a remedy. After impeachment, you could have a criminal prosecution, but the principal remedy, George, under our society is to pay a political price.

2008 Democratic National Convention Cities Announced

Eleven cities have received requests for proposals to host the 2008 Democratic convention.

The cities are: Anaheim, CA; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Detroit, MI; Las Vegas, NV; Minneapolis, MN; New Orleans, LA; New York, NY; Orlando, FL; Phoenix, AZ; and San Antonio, TX.

After the proposals are returned to the DNC by May 19, the technical advisory committee begins the process of reviewing the applications and visiting the cities this summer. The convention is scheduled for Aug. 25-28, 2008.

I think New Orleans -- a blue city, is great choice. Hosting the Democratic National Convention would provide a huge financial windfall the Crescent City. Not to mention, help show the world that New Orleans is still on the map and worth of a visit.

Posted by Christopher at March 7, 2006 07:15 AM

Christopher, you are absolutely correct and for all the reasons you mentioned. NO is the right City, in fact, I won't consider any other city. I don't think the Democrats should hold a Democratic Convention in any city in Texas, period.

2008 Democratic National Convention Cities Announced

I know Denver's name has been bantered about. It would be a decent choice since both houses at the state level were taken back in the last election and Governer Owens job is up. To show that a former red state turning blue is also good for a national audience.
Of course, having lived in CO for 14 years I have my own reasons for wanting it to be there and it would be just to stuff it into Dr. James Dobson's face!

Christopher, NOLA would be a fine choice.

Any predictions on today's crucial Intel Committe vote on whether we are a republic or not?

I'll only make one: in no circumstances will a purely Democratic "measure" be permitted to succeed or prevail. It is crucial to Rover that everything proposed by Democrats be defeated.

Thus, Rockefeller's proposed motion for an investigation must fail---Hagel and Snowe do not have the strength to do the right thing for the country; they're Republicans first, Americans second, remember. And they're all talk, anyway.

Should the Dems agree to some "compromise" that Hagel and Snowe can vote for? What's the compromise position to having an investigation?

I have noticed an extremely interesting trend on CSPAN.

For the longest time about 1/2 of the callers would be the "hide under the bed" type who wanted daddy preznit to protect them. The type who would just allow anything the preznit wanted to occur.

Something has changed.

Now, about 80-90% of the callers are saying that the preznit has waaaay toooo much unchecked power. That he needs no more power. That he must be held accountable. AND about 10-30% are just plain saying "IMPEACH".

The climate is changing guys. It is changing fast.

My only question is can the climate change fast enough, the Congress flow with the winds of the change, action actually occur, before America is lost forever?

The contradiction of the SD abortion ban: Take the Fifth - South Dakota's invitation to snuff your embryo.

Not surprisingly, I think this whole attempt to ban abortion isn't about overturning Roe v. Wade at all. I think it's just a cleverly designed "rally the base" campaign ploy. Get it into the minds of voters before the midterms, they forget about GOP corruption and incompentence and focus on "saving little babies." If it goes into huge court battles, all the better because then it'll still be kicking around in 2008.

Posted by ann at March 7, 2006 09:44 AM

euzoius, the hearing today is closed; I have no idea how long it will take for the public to get information on what has really occured behind those doors.

What cannot happen is a roll-over and a retroactive law passed which gives this preznit a pass on his law breaking.

They (Repukes) really want to do this.

It is very hard to not give up today on this whole interest in governmental affairs. It is hard to not just say 'fuck it - it does not matter what I do, they are going to do whatever they want anyway' (the Congress).

However, I cannot afford to give up on being a citizen. It is tempting. It is tempting to just deal with what I have to deal with (believe me, it is enough.)

So, I am in need of the pep-talk today. I am in need of the push to keep going in educating myself, educating others and fighting for what is good and right. I need to continue to fight and seek to right the wrongs that have been done to America. Every little bit helps.

Today it is difficult.

Remember when everyone was worried about an inverted yield curve? Now that long term rates are rising, folks are worried about that. Always something to worry about I guess.

One thought is that if the long term bond yields 5%, that folks might see that as an alternative to stocks. It could mean that foreign countries are taking a beating holding their lower-yielding bonds, and might want to dump them.

Or, it all could be normal pre-options week weakness and folks are scouring the headlines looking for a reason...

Good point--I do think it's partly to rally the base. It's ironic that they put the language in to allow for the morning-after pillwhen these nutters are trying to prevent people from even taking that. And many of them don't want birth control to be available to unmarried women either. Sheesh.

Another thing the "loophole" does is allowe people to destroy embryos that are "extra" and stored in a lab from in vitro fertilization. After all, if life begins at fertilization, then you can't destroy these embryos. But since you can take measures to get rid of an embryo until pregnancy can be determined by a pregnancy test, you can toss those extra embryos. You can kill them, but don't dare take the stem cells and use them for research!

OK, so, if you are not a virgin and not a Christian then its not really rape?!?!?!?

Posted by Anjha at March 7, 2006 12:05 PM

Yes, Anjha, the "sodomized virgin" exemption. BUT.....only if she doesn't know she's having an abortion. Sweet, isn't it? Think Progress has a good entry on it:

Make sure you check out all their linked articles as well. This is too twisted to believe.

Posted by ann at March 7, 2006 12:15 PM

The South Dakota freaks' abortion law is nothing but an assault on women. If I were a woman in South Dakota, I'd seriously entertain notions of hunting down these women-loathing legislators and their enabling fuck of a governor and doling out some frontier, Deadwoodesque justice...Al Swearengen-style.

They want women to be second class citizens...they don't give a shit about embryos. See it for what it is.

Thom Hartmann just played a clip of one of the SD Leglislators. He stated that in the case of "a Christian Virgin who was raped, someone who was saving herself for marraige, then carrying that child would be life threatening."

That must be the guy I posted about seeing on the News Hour the other night. Unbelievable. How, exactly, would carrying that child be life threatening? Did he explain that? The other day he went into great detail about the brutal rape, sodomy and beating that this potential case might involve. But if it was a "religious girl" and a virgin.... Makes me sick. I want someone to corner him and get him to explain how that threatens her life, because really what he's saying is that it harmss her mental health (which all rape does).

CG - every pregnancy takes its toll on a woman's body, more so the younger the girl is. But you're being sidetracked by the salacious bits, just as these so-called xtians are obsessing about every delicious detail over and over. As with gay issues, the fundies get hard talking about it; it's the only way they get to indulge in porn without the guilt. These xtians think that suffering is close to godliness, so a girl who sufficiently suffers with the appropriate piety is exempt from guilt for "murder" of a "baby," in their eyes. And yes, they're sick fucks framing the issue on their terms yet again.

GoW, please don't try to help. First of all, what's the difference between a freak who advocates bombing abortion clinics and a freak who advocates the murder of the enablers of said abortion clinic bomber?

Secondly, Al Swearingen - a fictional character, remember - isn't an indescriminate killer dealing out "frontier justice." When the character kills, it's more out of greed and expedience, rather than ideology, but we understand nuance is not your strong suit. It is kinda funny, though, that you would hold up a character that refers to women as "whores" and "cunts" as a bringer of justice for women today.

Would someone point out to me where in the Bible it even mentions abortion, never mind forbidding it. In the Old Testament, babies, children and pregnant women were skewered with swords without a blink of an eye.

Secondly, the simple fact is that humanity is overpopulating the Earth, and in an attempt to eek out an existence, the very environment the people exist in is destroyed, turning a disaster into a nightmare.

Lastly, sheep skins and various toxic elixirs have been used for thousands of years by virtually ever culture. There is no more miserable existence for a child than to be an unwanted mouth to feed. But I guess the anti-abortionist don’t consider that in their argument.

HSAs are nothing but tax shelters for the wealthy - you just proved it with your post! Who has enough extra cash to put into a tax shelter that could put over 5K back in their pockets?

The people who actually need health insurance can't afford the high deductible insurance policy, let alone have a few extra thousand to hide away each year.

Posted by ann at March 7, 2006 03:03 PM

tempus, abortion only became an issue when women started getting some rights of their own. It is not about the babies, it is about keeping women in their place by nailing their uterus to the kitchen floor between their bare feet. Dems need to start reframing this! This is a civil rights issue not a "baby" issue.

You want a giveaway for the middle and upper class? Howabout CA's proposition 82, Universal Preschool? 62% of kids currently enroll in private preschool, paid for by their parents. Prop 82 would put private preschools out of business and create a public preschool, hoping for a goal of 70% enrollment. Parents would then quit paying for private preschool, and enroll the kids in public preschool. It'd be great for the middle and upper class, as they currently have to pay out of pocket for preschool. They could spend that money on plasma TVs and SUVs. Fun things instead of spending it on private preschool.

Public preschool would be funded by increasing the top tax bracket to 11%. Probably not high enough to make you folks happy. And that would exclude raising taxes for other infrastructure needs and social programs.

Posted by muckdog at March 7, 2006 04:21 PM

Even though a simple search will offer innumerable evidence about the lasting benefits of preschool, it will matter little, Muck.

Although you attempted to hijack the thread with your continued talk about a booming economy and how we will all benefit from the great job that this administration is doing and how $8 Trillion in National Debt matters not - you inadvertently brought us back to the real topic here: control of women.

Do not worry. Even if preschool is free, it won't last long, because there will be multiple families living in single residences attempting to make ends meet and not end up on the streets in the tent cities.

Single family residences housing several families where the women - who no longer have control of their uteruses - and are instead just baby making machines, will attempt to put food into the mouths of all of those hundreds and thousands of children that they were forced to give birth to.

There will be no time or energy left to worry about education. This is perfect for the coming oligarchy. Leave the masses uneducated, poor, surviving. Leave the masses unable to take the time to study politics, write congress, write the papers.

Leave the masses - especially the women - at the mercy of those with power and money.

I know that you like to think that you are one of them, one of those with power and money and that you bless us with your money saving tips and investment advice.

You are a wannabe. It'll never happen. You are not in the right "class" with the rulers.

Ann, HSAs are very popular.

With the wealthy, yes. The people who would benefit from Bush's silly plan already have health insurance. The problem that needs to be solved is making health insurance affordable for everyone, not just the wealthy elite.

And encouraging folks to save and plan for medical expenses is a good thing.

Find a way to do that so that middle and lower income people can reap the same benefit. But a middle class family of four simply cannot afford to pay 100% of a high deductible health insurance plan as well as save enough to recognize anywhere near the tax savings that you boast of over 5K.

The people who would benefit from Bush's silly plan already have health insurance. Here's a list (Think Progress) of just a few problems with HSAs:

FACT — HSA USERS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE DIFFICULTY PAYING MEDICAL BILLS: Individuals with high-deductible insurance plans (HDHPs), which are mandatory with health savings accounts, are “more likely than those with traditional medical coverage to have difficulty paying their medical bills. Forty-nine percent of consumers with deductibles above $500 per year wound up with outstanding medical debt, vs. 32% with regular coverage.” [WebMD Medical News, 1/27/05]

FACT — HSA COST SAVINGS ARE ILLUSORY: HSAs are supposed to save costs by discouraging people from obtaining unnecessary health care. But about 70 percent of costs in the U.S. health system are for the top 10 percent most expensive people. These people’s costs are well above the deductible, and they usually require hospitalization or are chronically ill. A high deductible won’t change their behavior. [New Yorker, 8/29/05]

FACT — HSA USERS PAY MORE OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS: According to one study, “more than two-fifths (42 percent) of individuals with HDHPs [high-deductible insurance plans] and 3 in 10 (31 percent) in CDHPs [”consumer-driven” health plans] spent 5 percent or more of their income on out-of-pocket costs plus premiums in the past year, compared with about 1 in 10 (12 percent) in comprehensive health plans.” [Commonwealth Fund/Employee Benefit Research Institute, December 2005]

FACT — HSA USERS MORE LIKELY TO AVOID, SKIP, OR DELAY HEALTH CARE BECAUSE OF COSTS: Individuals in health savings accounts were “significantly more likely to avoid, skip, or delay health care because of costs than were those with comprehensive insurance, with problems particularly pronounced among those with health problems or incomes under $50,000.” Over 30 percent of individuals in these programs “reported delaying or avoiding care, compared with 17 percent of those in comprehensive health plans.” [Commonwealth Fund/Employee Benefit Research Institute, December 2005]

Posted by ann at March 7, 2006 07:28 PM

muck's definition of very popular:

"More than 3 million individuals now have health savings accounts.."

compared with

"The number of Americans without health insurance rose by 800,000 last year, reaching a record high of nearly 46 million, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday."

Sounds like it's more popular to not have health insurance at all! And everybody wants to be popular, right?

Poll: Cheney Less Popular Than OJ, Jacko

In the latest CBS News opinion poll, Vice President Dick Cheney earned an 18 percent approval rating. So how low is 18%?

To put it in perspective, Cheney is less popular than convicted murderer OJ Simpson and accused child molester Michael Jackson who enjoy a 25 percent and 29 percent favorable impression rates, respectively.

Even the late Vice President Spiro Agnew, who was forced to resign over charges of tax fraud enjoyed a 45 percent approval rating in the last poll taken before he left the Nixon administration.

At least Cheney can take comfort knowing he's more popular than bird flu.
