Comments: Open Thread - Bush Advisor In The Pokey Edition

So let's see. It took 4 weeks for Claude Allen to go from "resigning" for personal reasons to being indicted. What do you suppose will be the time needed to move Gail Norton from the innocent "want to spend time with the family" column to the "criminal indictee" column will be?

From the piece about Mr. Allen's resignation:

Republicans who know Allen are uncertain why he stepped down so suddenly. Late last week, he was in good spirits as he briefed allies and surrogates about the President's State of the Union message. On Tuesday, he attended a conference in PA on the president's faith based initiative.

Allen enjoys a warm relationship with moral conservative groups in Washington. As a senior political appointee at the Department of Health and Human services, he was the administration's point person on abstinence initiatives.

Yes, it certainly was surprising how fast this pious Bush appointee left his job.

I'll have to admit, having worked retail for a short period of time, the scam was clever. That's one scam I never heard of before.

Why has Homeland Security been given the responsibility of "rounding up" gang members? Domestic terrorism in the form of gang related violence is more of an issue to everyday living of Americans than attacks by Al-Qaeda or some other extremist group. Something about this makes me uneasy.

Posted by Judith at March 11, 2006 02:25 AM

I guess it is true. Healthy people attract healthy people, sick people attract sick people, and corrupt people attract others who are equally as corrupt. At least Bush&Co. seem to prove that concept.

Posted by Judith at March 11, 2006 02:42 AM

The evil permeates all in BushCo. At least he didn't return a pineapple to CostCo for a refund.

I'm sick over the Tom Fox murder. Another one for God-talks-to-me-Bushy!

Posted by bbtb at March 11, 2006 05:41 AM

Why has Homeland Security been given the responsibility of "rounding up" gang members?

Judith, probably for the same reason that the Patriot Act has been used to convict drug dealers. BushCo desperately wants to look like they are competent in something. This makes them look "tough on crime." Also, the term "domestic terrorism" is designed to make people feel safer as though we're thwarting al-Qaeda members in these arrests, while none of these gang members had any ties to al-Qaeda, they were immigrants. But the average American won't remember that. They've heard al-Qaeda and gang members and Homeland Security in the same news report. Remember the old game "Gossip" where you sit in a circle and whisper a word to the person next to you, by the time the word goes all the way around the circle, what started out as "walrus" turns into "anus." It works like that.

It's similar how they describe environmental groups who damage property as "ecoterrorists."

Posted by ann at March 11, 2006 05:52 AM

Allen obviously has some kind of psychological problem. He's making six figures but commits fraud to the tune of 5K? Reminds me of rich girls who shoplift. Something about needing attention or feeling in control.

Posted by ann at March 11, 2006 05:54 AM

Claude Allen, I remember him. During the 1984 U.S. Senate race in North Carolina when I was a volenteer for the Jim Hunt campaign, we actually bumped into some of the Jesse Helms people in downtown Charlotte, I think it was in October or maybe late September, and one Mr. Allen was among them. I, a white guy, had to restrain one of my fellow volenteers, a black guy named Ivan who had a burning "I'm gonna rip that uncle Tom a new one" look in his eyes. Allen saw Ivans' face and had a look of real fear on his own face. The man is not physically courageous. I probabally saved Claude Allen a major ass whoopin'.

And the "easier for us to exploit" shit - pretending to be liberal as other trolls have done, then pouncing on the "us" means "white" crap - was hilariously amateurish. Must be fresh out of troll school to plop so obvious and out of context an accusation of racism in the middle of a thread about 'puke corruption. It's sad, but amusing.

mainsailset - I was wondering this myself. But it appears Allen's method was a bit different. He was buying the stuff, then going into the store, getting another item exactly the same and pretending to return that one with the sales slip from the earlier purchase. Basically, he was getting his stuff free. My friend's former method was to go into the store and get the money - probably the reason why we now have to have a sales slip for returns at Target. Either way, I wouldn't have thought of doing it in a million years. But then, I'm not Republican.

It's a saturday, and I'm about to head out shopping and running some errands in this "worst economy since Hoover."

Prediction: Freeways crowded with traffic. People spending 30 minutes trying to find a parking place. Long lines at cash registers, with people leaving stores with tons of merchandise.

Probably just like the 30's, eh?

Oh, later I'm going to a casino. Last weekend there, there weren't any empty slot machines. Waiting lines at card tables. Long lines at the restaurants. It was very crowded. Lines everywhere. While there is a "high stakes" area of the casino that caters to the rich (which is also very crowded), most of the folks in the casino seem to be from the lower and middle classes.

I guess it's okay living in the "worst economy since Hoover" as long as folks have tons of free cash to spend at the malls and casinos, eh?

MP,

Do you have a regular routine where you get up and actually practice being a tool?

Posted by Simp at March 11, 2006 09:48 AM

The more that I read, the more I see georgie porgie as just another character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

"I want my war, I want my torture, I want my UNPatriot Act, I want my spying, I want an Oompa-Loompa too Daddy."

Seems that as his administration is falling all around him, turning into blueberries and getting stuck in tvs, he is yet remaining unaffected.

There is no one, however, in his administration who will be Charlie and who will own up to being bribed for the recipe to the everlasting gobstopper - so it is up to us, the people, to tell Willy Wonka (god?) (OK, not god, but the moral compass of the world) the truth.

I know from experience, and from every fable ever told, that people who live their life based on greed and deceit and cheating and lying and murderous-torturing-evil, never, ever win.

So, how is it that this motherfucker seems to continue to get away with it?

The Congress is just as complicit in his illegal acts; Pat Roberts giving a free pass on spying on Americans, rubber-stamp Republican Congress. And now I hear, the Pentagon is not going to look into the war profiteering of Halliburton - WTF?!?!?! Will all of the proof!

There are those who are speaking truth to power; but they are in the minority. There are some really, really good guys - Conyers, Feingold, Kucinich, Murtha, Boxer, Slaughter, McDermott, and others who are not as loud and well-known, but they speak out.

How do we encourage more people to be like the above?

Posted by Anjha at March 11, 2006 10:27 AM

Well, no shit.

Funny that this "study" did not mention the tons of legislation, introduced by Dems, shot down by Repukes that demanded better port security.

You know - the Dems need to bring this point home, over and over again, we introduced a, b, c and d legislation to tighten port security and the Republican Congress would not allow it to be voted on, would not allow it to pass.

With as much of an uproar as there was, all over this country on port security, this is the perfect opportunity for the Dems to prove that they are the ones fighting for America.

Excellent point Anjha. The Dems are the true Patriots, the defenders of Constitutional and other important individual rights, the party who cares about security and is willing to do something about it, not just talk about it, scare people, and profit off of the misfortune of others. We must frame the debate properly, and continue to get the message out. The Repugli-cons are the true obstuctionists. Their Culture of Corruption and Secrecy needs to be replaced with a truly democratic Culture of Conversation. A culture in wh/ the American people, the people who actually own our collective government!!!, are included in the discussion, where the government is open, transparent and ACCOUNTABLE!!

People keep claiming that the consumer is dead or just living on credit. I think they've been saying that now for 25 years. Seems like folks have figured out a way to live on their budgets, and if that includes credit debt maybe that's okay with them. You only live once, right?

As I mentioned yesterday, not sure if it was here or on my blog, but there are 7 million millionaires in the US. How did most of them become that way? Saving and investing in the stock market over a long period of time and avoiding debt. Sure, there are some who inherited their money and some who won the lottery, but most got rich from the stock market.

The folks over at AngryBear like to call tax cuts "deferred tax hikes."

Well, lets call buying on credit (and paying interest) "deferred retirement."

But it's a choice a lot of people are making. Not a lot of those 7 million millionaires made that same choice, but it is all about choice.

Everyone I know who is as 'prosperous' as you claim we all are has hocked their houses so many times that the mortgage documents outweigh the walls and roofs!

At some point, economic conditions (something you falsely claim to know something about) will cause the investors to holler "No Sale!" as they run for the shelters. No more refi bailout of the credit card debt. No new X-boxes, no new plasma HDTVs, no new SUK-Vees, no new stock purchases - maybe even no food.

But go ahead and party like it's 1999! That was, at least, a truly prosperous year for everyone. Thus, one of your fantasies will have a foot in reality.

First of all, any illusion that there is anything good about this economy, for anyone who earns less than the top 5% can be rebuffed here. Please, disprove the points made at the link.

Second of all, the Americans in this country who are not already living in poverty are living off of the equity in their houses which will collapse when the value of the dollar the falls (which it will) and their homes are devalued as well.

Unless you can actually engage in a true debate, where you take point by point examinations of the charts and graphs and articles and definitions that so many people have provided you with, maybe you ought to go back to sitting in the bar with your other illusioned 28 year old wall street wannabe elites trolling for pussy and claiming to know everything there is to know about economics.

That "military keynesian" link reads like it was written by a whacked out liberal college professor. You know the type. Can't make it in the real world, so he hides in colleges where he can preach to 18-yr olds and sound smart without being challenged.

There's no relationship whatsoever to the US now and Germany in the 1930's. Not one.

I like that the writer listed Reagan in the 80's, without even mentioning LBJ's true guns and butter policies of the 60's. If the writer wanted to make the point about military spending, intellectual honesty would dictate that he go back to guns and butter. Or even FDR getting the US out of the 1930's depression via WWII.

Looks like you're just searching wiki trying to rationalize your views. Because your views are in conflict with reality. As I note day after day with links to actual facts and statistics, not opinion pieces from Wiki.

Emal, people in this country get plenty of food in their bellies. The obesity rate is near 70%, give or take. And guess what income group has the highest obesity rate? The poor!

The answer to poverty isn't higher taxes, it's education. All statistics show that the difference between higher earners and lower earners is due to education. The unemployment rate for folks with a high school diploma and higher (college/some college/post grad) is under the national unemployment rate. It's the folks without a high school diploma who are poor and have trouble finding jobs.

That's why there's a push for exit exams and quality assurance to help kids get out with a good education.

Anyway one looks at it - as long as we are "at war" and they continue to hide the cost of the war and not put it in the budget - and borrow to pay for it - people can stay ignorant about what is really going on.

pigeon6, sure it's about race. Haven't you noticed on TLC we only write negatively about blacks, especially those in the WH. What a fucking idiot. Obviously Pigeon hasn't bothered to read TLC much, or she is a beginner troll, and not a very good one at that.

You just made my point Thank You

Katherine, It is so sweet, it's been a steady rain since about 1 AM, not hard enough to cause major washouts. Just a good sincere soaking that we so desperately needed.

Thank You, Mother Nature.

Turkey Troll Seis, We don't highlight the fact that Abramoff is a Jew, Ken Mehlman is gay, Alberto Gonzales is Hispanic or that Prescott bu$h was a Nazi sympathizer but really, we are making fun of (They Call Me) Mr. Allen for the small potato's he's going after.
He's really sick and needs to see a Dr.

Posted by bbtb at March 11, 2006 06:25 PM

Fellow rain-soaked one: Not only small potatoes, but Target has the most sophisticated security operation in retail. They help police departments, other retailers, and even the Secret Service, in clearing up video for their cases.

Would'nt a guy working in the WH know this? I
forgot, the port deal was also a surprise.

I read 18 articles on this Allen incident, and the only one race rapp'in is pid-jun-poop-haf-duz.

O' TIKI WETTED ONE, I feel sorry for all the activities that were washed out today...NOT!

"Others on this blog use personal attacks" Posted by Pigeon

Excuse me, but wasn't it you who accused us of exploiting someone who is black? I took that as a personal insult/attack.

I still have room on the "3 bisexual members of each species ark", if it gets too deep.

Were those rained-out activites GOP in nature?

"You just made my point Thank You"

Well, you obviously missed mine. LOL

That's why there's a push for exit exams and quality assurance to help kids get out with a good education.

muck clearly has no children. "exit exams" and "quality assurance" have nothing to do with the quality of a child's education, they simply exemplify how well a school can coach their students to perform on a stadardized test. Besides, we already do that: it's called the PSAT, the SAT, the CAT. Do we really need to spend more education funding on yet another stadardized test when we already administer several? Not really, but it makes for good election year banter to look like canididates really care.

a guy like this deserves 10 years in the clinker, and then another 10 of community service to all the "queers," "radical feminists," socialists, AIDS patients and union members that he worked so diligently to screw over.

disgraceful behavior.

Trey Ellis over at huffington has a good take on him: "..He's a black man who got his start working for Jesse Helms, the former Senator who had the delightful habit of calling all black people, "Fred." Man, what I wouldn't give to be Claude Allen's shrink. The inside of his brain must look like Saigon in the last days of the war..."

shorter "50 state" puppyboy:
Children living in poverty just need to take more educational exit exams to make it into the millionaires club.

btw, I am amazed that you kept your head from exploding with your last screed that went from rising rates of poverty, to obesity, to your signature comment... taxes are baaaaaad, to unemployment rates, to more educational exit exams for kids. You really have a little too much fiber in your diet these days puppyboy...but I guess all that high living that is done in the millionaires club, you would have time to excrete that type of verbal diarrhea day after day now wouldn't you. LOL puppyboy, get out among the masses, they don't have cooties and guess what not all of them are obese.

I've read in a couple of places now that Allen was part of the Katrina Response Team. I wonder if any of the misuse of those funds, like even the $2,000 debit cards, can be traced to him. If he's willing to scam Target for 5K, I'm sure he would have found a way to some of those Katrina relief funds.

Posted by ann at March 12, 2006 07:26 AM

Good point, Ann. How many $2000 scammers would have been deterred if they had to give a thumbprint to receive the $? A bank asks for that much, even if you have ID.

muck clearly has no children.

Muckpuppy has never had a girlfriend. Who in their right mind would listen to his drivel day in and day out?

I'm just an outsider here, but it seems like the only one here with pervasive racial issues is pigeon6.
