Rock and roll! Small victory, but chalk up one, at least, for the good guys!
Posted by oppressmenot at March 17, 2006 03:25 PMI'll tell you, the more I read about Eliot Spitzer the more I like him.
If he wins the next New York governor's race and really hits the ball out of the park with that, the Dems will really have a solid Presidential candidate of the future.
Posted by Jason at March 17, 2006 03:49 PMAG Eliot Spitzer: the Next Governor of the Great State of New York!
Posted by Christopher at March 17, 2006 03:52 PMelliot is grandstander and publicity hog........put him chuck schumer and hilary in a room and you could create a vacuum as they would suck all air from said room...........suozzi has been fine campaigner and has rescued nassau county from bankruptcy. (as an aside nassau county probably has more people than 10 states so he is a legitimate executive) . dont misundrestimate suozzi because he is a scarily determined campaigner who has made mincemeat of the once fabled gop machine in nassau county. jjj
Posted by jjj at March 17, 2006 04:51 PMI don't care who gets publicity on this issue. This is a HUGE win for the environmental community and they don't see big wins often. Kudos to the community groups and states who took on the EPA and the energy industry and WON!
Posted by ann at March 17, 2006 07:47 PMIt would be extraordinary for this decision to be overturned. It was both unanimous and utterly consistent with the big precedents on when courts defer to administrative determinations.
Posted by dj moonbat at March 17, 2006 09:05 PMjjj has a point. spitzer backed off on one of his famous securites stings and gave the offenders (Merrill Lynch?) a slap on the wrist. spitzer is a decent AG (although i don't appreciate his support for the death penalty), but overtaking the GOP in nassau county is a substantial achievement for suozzi. OTOH, the hacks suozzi replaced were notoriously corrupt, so maybe it just caught up with them.
still, this decision is good news and kudos to spitzer for it, glory-hound or no.
Posted by benjoya at March 18, 2006 09:02 AMWhile I admit to having some reservations about Elliot Spitzer, just who else do the Democrats have who can garner support???
Posted by pessimist at March 18, 2006 11:14 AMbenjoya.........regarding the hacks that suozzi replaced.........you are very correct.......i have friends in the nasssau gop hierarchy and i ve have told them that their organization had reach a sclerotic state similiar to the communist party in russia prior to the fall. the republicans controlled nassau county for the entire 20th century save the 60s when a democrat(gene nickerson)was county executive....and at that time they did not control the legislative body as they do now. so this is first period where democrats are truly in control........the democratic "boss' in the 60s was jack english who wasone of the early supporters of jfk and played a significant role in convincing bobby that he could win senate seat in 1964......jack english, jfk and rfk all died too young and too soon..........as an aside i am way to
the right of much of what gets written here but this is very intelligent and interesting site. peace.jjj
