I disagree with your last premise. I am a raging Left Liberal pragmatic Democrat in a smallish Blue city in a Red County in a Blue state. I have heard that so-called "greatest generation" laud themselves so much and so often for living through , having experienced, the Great Depression, that I want one. I want a real slam-bang bottom crashing depression, and the sooner the better. I'm serious! Then, and this is where we differ, I want to batten down the hatches, get on the same boat, and survive as a Nation. If Kansas shapes up ( the clarity of a decent depression should be eye-opening), then I in California am ready to float our common boat.
I could go on forever.
There's no guarentee that the leader who is able to consolidate power under depression conditions will be benign or democratic. America was damn lucky to have an FDR rather than a Hitler. Given the depth of the culture wars and the hate produced by such, I'm pessimistic that the "good guys" would win a national emergency.
