I dunno, Condi's reassurance and weasel words from that article are anything but comforting...with comments like
"I don't think that anybody believes that we really want to be there longer than we have to,"... Yup where have I heard her use that similar preface before...oh yeah sounds awful familiar to,
I don't think anyone could have imagined flying airplanes into buildings..

Next up there is this weasel comment.
I would think that people would tell you, we're not seeking permanent bases really pretty much anywhere in the world these days

Yup, "I would think that people would tell you" that, (but we aren't telling you that directly either). Never mind we aren't seeking permanent bases really "pretty much" anywhere in the world (pretty much everywhere except Iraq).

And then there's this comment from the article,
"I can't foresee the future of whether or not there will be some need for American forces for some period of time," she added.

Comforting...not! These are some serious non committal words in that statement. Maybe she can't forsee permanent bases, but I betchya Rummy, Cheney and the neocons now placed everywhere in gov't and throughout the state dept can forsee these things long term. Never mind this is coming from the same group of bozo's that "couldn't forsee" the Al qaeda threat, the quagmire and hornets nest they opened up by invading and occupying Iraq.

Condi has no credibility, and being an administration spokesman using these idiotic answers just confirms it's all just crap!

Thanks Steve for posting that.

Certainly, there will alway be some disgrunted people saying "too little, too late" to whatever is proposed. I guess they still will say that the day the last troops is out of Iraq.

However, it is good to see that some Democrats are actually proposing plans to get out of Iraq and do it sooner than later. I wished they were all on the same page.

Good for Kerry (and for Murtha, Feingold, and others who have proposals on the table aiming at the same thing).

Excellent deconstruction of Condi's vacuous, deceitful non-assurances by emal---you would've been a great Kremlinologist! (perhaps you were one!)

Steve's analysis actually looks like a good plan to me, if only the Dems as a whole would see it as one, and begin presenting the same message.

The crucial issue/distinction is that the Criminal Republican Party's Maximum Leader declared (unwittingly?) at his recent press conference that troop withdrawal in Iraq will likely be decided by his "successor" post 2008---all Brownshirt & Crucifix Party candidates must have that position branded across their scaly foreheads.

I would think that people would tell you, that I am beloved by all of the Iraqi people. -President Saddam Hussein prior to his removal from power.

Just an observation on the worth of "what people will tell you".

Posted by snark at April 5, 2006 06:22 AM

"Some people will tell you" is a variation on the FUXnews sleight-of-hand "some say."

Really Brit? Who the fuck are these "some" who "say?"

Some say that you're into rough sex with trannies in priest costumes, Brit. That's what some say. Some say that your boy Hannity shoots sweet jane with Coulter, who proceeds to sodomize him with her 12 inch schlong. That's what some say. Some say O'Reilly's got a warehouse full of loofah shaped dildos and falafel underwear.

Hey, that's what some say.

emal's deconstruction is right on. Check out this (testy) exchange between Kerry and Condi on Feb. 15 in the SFRC. Condi is a master of obfuscation and half-answers. She's a weasel.

KERRY: So I would ask you today: Is it, in fact, the policy of this administration not to have permanent basing in Iraq? RICE: I think General Pace has spoken to that, Senator, and he speaks for the administration. Senator, our job now is to use our forces to help the Iraqis gain control of their own security environment, to train their forces to protect our people who need to go out in the field to be a presence outside of Baghdad. That is the purpose of our forces. As the president said, we don't want to be there one day longer than we need to be. KERRY: I understand that, and we all want that transition. I'm just trying to figure out what the long term is, because I don't think the administration has actually said that before with clarity. So if you're affirming today what the generals have said as the policy, that's a step forward. RICE: Well, Senator, I think General Pace has spoken to this. I don't want to, in this forum, try and prejudge everything that might happen all the way into the future. The policy of this administration is to, as quickly as possible, turn over responsibility for security to the Iraqis and, as the president said, we will be very pleased the day when American forces can come home. KERRY: So the conclusion for what you've just said is that the civilian leadership, which is how we lead the military in the United States, has a different position from the uniformed leadership — which is you're reserving the right to make that decision in the future? RICE: Senator, I said I'm not going to try to speak to something that is that far into the future. KERRY: I heard what you said. I understand. RICE: We are… KERRY: No, I understand. RICE: Yes. Sorry. KERRY: I got your answer.

Kick ass. Kerry is laying out a put-up-or-shut-up approach that should come as a breath of fresh air to a public that's sick of "stay the course" (I think people have caught on that that translates to "Keep your arms and legs inside the handbasket until we arrive at our final destination").

We can just bet that the MSM will ignore it while the Neo-cons paint it as cut-and-run, ignoring the point that Kerry is proposing tough love for the Iraqi factions. It'll be amusing to see if they try to get away with calling it cut-and-run *and* maintaining their "Democrats have no plan" mantra simultaneously, but whatever spin they throw on it, we need to counter it. I think LTEs are in order. Also sending copies to our Dem congress-critters and demanding that they get on board.

Kerry has had a plan for Iraq for a very long time.

I watched a long speech that he gave at Georgetown around this time. It was a detailed and complete plan.

Kerry also had a plan during the 2004 campaign, yet it was not very long ago - the last couple of weeks - that some pundit said he would've like Kerry to win (sarcastically) so that 'he could see the Iraq plan' which Kerry had on his website for some time.

Oct 26 he spoke at Georgetown.

Media does not give a shit about reporting the truth on any alternative plans. They have been out there for a long time.

It is much easier to say "Dems have no plans."

I am glad that we are backing them into a corner; however, when feral cats are backed into corners...

Good for John: Attaboy!
by Wade Sanders

John Kerry’s argument in today’s New York Times hits the nail on the head.

As someone who has known him since we both served on Swift Boats in Vietnam, I know that John at his best is a voice of reason and action and conscience.

Good stuff! I'm proud that Senator Kerry has not let up on them. He's called for Rummy's resignation how many times? He's blasted Condi repeatedly. He was right during the campaign when he said Iraq was, "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time."

If the Administration had listened to Senator Kerry about how to get Iraqi troops and police trained in a timely manner, we'd have been out of Iraq a year ago. Even after further Bush Administration blunders, John Kerry proposed a plan last October, which probably would have had us out of Iraq by now if it had been followed.

More Bush blunders and cognitive dissonance later, we are still in Iraq. No wonder the senator is pissed.

I'm surprised how we haven't heard squat from the Republican attack machine. Not even a snarl from Cheney. They are probably covering as their poll numbers continue to drop. Whatever they say, they will look bad.

This gives Dems an opportunity. We can't be silent now. We have to show the bastards that Democratic Unity isn't an oxymoron. Let's get behind Senator Kerry on this and insist that we set a deadline to get out of Iraq.
