Comments: Open Thread - AP Poll Shows Bush At 36%, Democrats with 16-Point Margin For November

We'd win Congress if the election was today. The last time we had a president with an approval rating that low, their party lost Congress. The Republicans are going down. Say hello to Minority Leader Hastert and Minority Leader McConnell.

Here's how low our elections can sink:

SUGAR LAND, Texas (April 7) - Supporters of U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay protested at an event Thursday held by the Democratic candidate for the congressman's seat, and the event quickly dissolved into a shouting and shoving match. Police were called, but made no arrests.

"I got pushed. I got hit. I got a sign wadded up in my face and my hat pulled down over my eyes," said Marsha Rovai, 69, a supporter of Nick Lampson. "They just did it to be nasty."

DeLay campaign manager Chris Homan said he organized the protest but DeLay, a Republican, didn't know about it.

Trolls, now tell me again how we are the party of hate.

How did the Secret Service let this guy get in?

Q You never stop talking about freedom, and I appreciate that. But while I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water and eating safe food. If I were a woman, you'd like to restrict my opportunity to make a choice and decision about whether I can abort a pregnancy on my own behalf. You are --

THE PRESIDENT: I'm not your favorite guy. Go ahead. (Laughter and applause.) Go on, what's your question?

Q Okay, I don't have a question. What I wanted to say to you is that I -- in my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of, nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington, including the presidency, by the Senate, and --

AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Booo!

THE PRESIDENT: No, wait a sec -- let him speak.

Q And I would hope -- I feel like despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administration, and I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself inside yourself. And I also want to say I really appreciate the courtesy of allowing me to speak what I'm saying to you right now. That is part of what this country is about.

THE PRESIDENT: It is, yes. (Applause.)

Q And I know that this doesn't come welcome to most of the people in this room, but I do appreciate that.

THE PRESIDENT: Appreciate --

Q I don't have a question, but I just wanted to make that comment to you.

Well, I guess after sowing the wind for fifty years, the Republicans are about to reap the whirlwind. I would hope that the Democratic politicans who might get swept into Washington this time, unlike the last two times this happened, realize that their Republican colleagues aren't just political opposition but are true vermin and deserve to be stamped out of the body politic. How many more incidents like McCarthy, Nixon, and Bush does the nation need to endure before the party which specializes in their brand of politics gets consigned to the dump. It's time to fumigate Washington. Leave no Republican behind.

If we bankrupted the country to get to this point how the fuck could we be headed in the right direction?

Posted by paradox at April 7, 2006 04:58 AM

There is a point at which a gerrymander goes into reverse. Gerrymanders work by dispersing voters from the favoured party and concentrating voters from the disfavoured party. The cube rule predicts that the the ratio of seats won will be the ratio of votes to the power of between 2 and 3. A 16 point spread is a cataclysmic shift that will make gerrymanders like Texas go into reverse and favour the Democrats.

Democratic supporters at republican events get arrested if they have an political t-shirt on. Republican agitators start fist fights at a democratic event, and no one gets arrested. Yeah, I get it.

I woke up this morning to a very large headline in my red state reading "Bush authorized Leak". Now Rove/Bush has these options: Call Libby a liar (good, since we know he is), just don't comment (probable), blame everthing on Cheney (force him out and replace him with either an elder statesman placeholder or an heir apparent). The fourth, which has already taken place, is argue that the President can declassify whatever he wants. This option is problematic because of the political context and because it tacitly admits Bush leaked it. I don't think Bush will get much of a poll boost out of any of these. Why won't the Dem leadership just run a bunch of commercials showing Bush claiming he know's nothing of the leak, and will "deal with" anyone he catches???? Come on Dems, lets play hardball. The guy is on the ropes.

There is an interesting (and probably more relevant poll) posted on RCP this morning... Keep in mind that there is few things less useful than generic congressional polling.

Anyways... this poll talks about approval for 'your' representative -

Bottom line: 57% approve of their own rep and only 21% disapprove. So there goes the idea that there is a widespread panic in the masses to replace their own representative.

I think people want change... but they want someone else to do it for them. As in
"my guy is alright, but you need to vote out yours".

I have always believed this. Not that they knew planes were going to be flown into the WTC but that an attack was coming and they just let it happen on purpose.

On Real Time last week, Dana Rorhrabacher said he knew we were going to be attacked on 9/11 (because a leader in Afghanistan had been murdered) and called the WH the day before.

Too bad about the whole gerrymandering thing, eh? Of the 35 seats up for grabs in the House, most of them are already held by Democrats.

ROTFLMAO

It doesn't matter much what folks think about Bush's foreign policy, because Democrats are viewed as weak on defense. In addition, most folks vote their pocketbooks. And this economy is rip-roarin' strong... One easy way to know how the middle class is doing is to look at the stock of Darden Restaurants (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Smokey Bones, etc.) Another good stock to look at to check on the middle class is Best Buy.

If folks are loading up on iPods and big screen TVs, and filling up their bellies with lobster, shrimp, and pasta, then things are going pretty good.

Posted by muckdog at April 7, 2006 08:28 AM

from Wiki:

Massoud was the victim of a suicide attack which occurred at Khvajeh Ba Odin on September 9, 2001, two days before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in the United States, a timing considered significant by some commentators who believe Osama bin Laden ordered the assassination to ensure he would have the Taliban's protection and cooperation in Afghanistan.

Posted by ann at April 7, 2006 08:28 AM

I think that they might be a little afraid the Diebold is not going to work for them as well this time.

In the hearing with the House Judiciary Committee and Abu Gonzales yesterday I learned of several irregularities with the VRA.

Apparently the lack of enforcement of the VRA is a lot more widespread than previously acknowledged.

We know about TX redistricting and the GA poll tax and the CA loss of 46% of Dem voter approval...but apparently the only lawsuits that the DOJ filed on behalf of people denied the right to vote in the last couple of years have been 3; one of them was in MS where white voters claimed discrimination in a primarily black district.

In addition, Katrina victims not allowed satellite voting - Iraqis were.

They are also attempting to pass a Constitutional Amendment repealing representation based on "the number of persons" and changing it to "US citizens". This would change the make-up of Representatives substantially.

Also, House voted last week to regulate "527" orgs (Move On, etc) which benefit primarily progressive voters.

They are scared and are doing everything in their power to deny the vote to to progressive voters. This scrambling and desperation says to me that they may not be able to depend on Diebold et al as much as they did in 2004.

Our goal should be to make sure that as many people as possible are registered to vote and that we target "suburban" voters. As I said in an earlier post rural will go primarily to Pukes, Urban primarily to Dems - although both of these groups are voting less now...it is the suburban voters who will determine the election. Also important is to get out as many urban voters as possible.

I think this is wrong-headed thinking. Unemployment is down to 4.7%, wages are growing faster than inflation (incomes are up over $2000 including inflation since 2001), etc.

I guess the Democrats can run on Iraq in November if they can come up with a plan (LOL), but they won't be able to run against Bush's economic record.

Yeah, waste of vital organs, that's why consumer credit is at historic highs and the savings rate is NEGATIVE.

Posted by God Of War at April 7, 2006 09:59 AM

Maybe folks are using more credit because they are wealthier than ever, and can manage the monthly payments.

The savings rate doesn't include capital gains on real estate or stocks/mutual funds. As my links above show, more people than ever own their homes. And the majority of folks own stocks/mutual funds.

Posted by Katherine Hunter at April 7, 2006 10:16 AM

Maybe people are using more credit because they simply don't have the cash since wages have been stagnant for so long. I'd say that's more likely.

And stop with the "more people than ever own their homes," bullshit. People are mortgaged to the hilt, they own nothing. People were able to buy with no down payments, interest only mortgages and ARMs that are going up every time the Feds raise the interest rate. And if someone has to sell and they have no equity, more than likely they'll lose money on their home.

Maybe, but doubtful. People are borrowing because they aren't wealthy and they need to go to the doctor, buy groceries, etc.

And btw, I don't have to rationalize my beliefs. I know how people struggle in this economy, but since you rarely travel outside your own little bubble, you have no idea.

goose1: Wilson should file a civil suit against Bush. We KNOW that it can be done.

No, we don't. We know that a sitting president may be sued, while in office, for things he did before s/he was president. But for activities a president undertakes in his/her official capacity, s/he is immune from damages liability, unless the actions violated "clearly established" law. It's not at all clearly established that a president cannot selectively declassify information, so Bush is almost certainly in the clear.

Wilson can only sue for injunctive relief—as opposed to damages—if he can show that Bush et al. would likely release classified information in retaliation again. Los Angeles v. Lyons, 461 US 95 (1983). That seems unlikely in the extreme.

The only remedy that we have to stop this shit is impeachment, and we probably won't even have that if we get a turnover in Congress.

Bummer, huh?
