The evil of factions was expounded on at length by Madison in Federalist #10. It's so well-written that you have to spend a little time figuring out why it was so wrong--Madison himself won the presidency as the member of a faction a few years later...
P,
Burlington did have good success with IRV, and I am in general suportive of the idea. A coworker had an ovservation that I found to be thought provoking:
The run off election allows you to choose again between two candidates, and compare them seperatly, not as first & second choice. would your vote be different if you had only two choices the second time?
We're pretty happy abot the BTV results, but if it had gone to the rethugs, we may not be. As it is a progressive won it.

Seems to me that this is indicative of the rather boisterous debate that characterizes a viable political party. Let's have more!
And the Democrats choose to get rid of Joe Lieberman: groupthink at its best!
Posted by Bagley at April 8, 2006 07:10 PMBagley,
Groupthink is the issue with Leiberman. Herd mentality too. Only he's herding and group thinking with the wrong group.
If he want to be a republican, he knows who to call.
Bagley, you should talk about "group think". Hell, you guys not only invented the term, you live it every day of your lives. When's the last time a Republican strayed from the talking points?
