"We cannot subscribe to one law for the weak, another law for the strong; one law for those opposing us, another for those allied with us. There can only be one law -or there can be no peace." ---Eisenhower denouncing "gunboat diplomacy" by England, France, and the Israelis, in the 1956 Suez Canal dispute with Egypt.
Nassar got pissed off and sunk 40 ships in the canal, kinda blocking it.
Now, on the other hand, the decendents of Commodore Perry might just be up for the Venezuela aircraft carrier caper.
Posted by TIKI AL at April 13, 2006 01:13 AMAnybody want to bet that Venezuela will be next to announce that it is going nuclear? I'll bet the technical expertise is there.

That allegation has already been made by Bu$hCo. I'll be covering that in the next segment.
Posted by pessimist at April 13, 2006 03:33 AMAnd don't forget, Venezuela's democratically elected president is a madman!! He was a corporal in the army, just like Hitler! He is another Hitler!!
By sequestering OilCo assets he has attacked the US!! Bomb! Bomb! Invade! Democracy! Security! Support the Troops!! Stay the Course!!
Posted by euzoius at April 13, 2006 05:35 AMI don't like beating up on Latin American countries, but I don't worry about it leading to a larger conflict. We've been beating down on those poor fuckers south of the border for so long, it's not going to lead to wider conflict or anything. Isn't that practically the Monroe Doctrine? We'll pee all over South America whenever we want, and the rest of the world can F off?

euzoius, sorry, but that is George's mantra.
Posted by tempus at April 13, 2006 05:53 AMDon't you love Chavez's dedication to the rule of law?
with latin america swinging to the left (mexico is probably next, this year), i don't think a US/Latin American conflict.
chavez might not be thomas jefferson, but he's about a thousand years ahead of the bush, i mean saudi royals.

finish your sentences, benjoya!
Is there a Gulf of Tonkin anywhere near the US aircraft carrier exercises?
Posted by Mary at April 13, 2006 07:57 AMMary: I think they are still trying to explain the Gulf of Tonkin. What a blatent lie President Johnston heaped on US citizens. Thank God I too young to serve in that mess.
Posted by tempus at April 13, 2006 08:09 AMWait, didn't I hear about a recent drug bust in Mexico of a plane coming from Venezuela? Yup there it is.
Posted by iamcoyote at April 13, 2006 08:48 AMNYTimes and Wapo have been publishing extremely anti-Chavez news reports and op-eds recently.
Posted by SqueakyRat at April 13, 2006 09:56 AMSimon Bolivar's airline: FreeFlight.
Hugo's is an authoritarianism reminiscent of the excesses of imperial and Vatican rule.
=======================
Squeaky, that's the point I was getting at. They've been ranting about Chavez for a while now.
Posted by iamcoyote at April 13, 2006 10:47 AMKim - Theres nothing more "authoritarian" than a cluster bomb dropping on your family. You little, entitled, excruciatingly bourgeois, pinhead.
