Comments: Weekend Open Thread

Had to snicker at Rosa Brooks'comment yesterday in the LA Times: "Real Americans Pout, Don't Protest: One More Job for Immigrants."

Maybe because after the protest in NYC for the RNC convention '04, many of us are scared shitless. Dumb luck made me bail early from Union Square that day and take the gratis subway back to the International A.N.S.W.E.R bus returning to DC, and I avoided what many protesters endured, they were arrested and put into squalid holding spaces. A lot has happened since those glorious days of our silly confidence in US Constitution, like totalitarian intercepts into our poor little lives, such as a stolen Presidential election. A few more marches, the Latinos will learn, like I did that it's better to stay home and fume alone.

Bedwetters pack heat.

Then they join the military.

Molly Ivans has a good take on things, as usual.

Hey, if anyone is interested, you evidently can buy secret military files at a bazaar in Afghanistan. WTF?

BAGRAM, Afghanistan, April 14 — An American military officer, flanked by six powerfully built bodyguards, stood in the muddy streets of the bazaar here on Friday buying up all the computer flash drives he could find, handing out cash for the finger-thin components that have been disappearing by the score — some of them with copies of secret military files — from the air base nearby.

At Exxon, guess what you get for "a very long and distinguished career." How about a $400 million retirement package. How does it feel to be paying for Raymond's retirement at the pump?

War profiteering.

Oh, well. Someone's got to do it and his name is Dick Cheney. His reported income for 2005 was $8.5 million -- thanks in large part to the sale of 430,000 share of Halliburton.

He's the highest paid babysitter in history.

And in the news:

President Bush today announced that sex with goats is legal, and civil marriage to domestic animals is no longer a crime. No one has seen his dog in a month, by the way.

VP Dickless Cheney has finally declared himself President, much to the Chimp’ annoyance. Cheney justified the apparent coup by simply quoting Bush’s IQ, which are apparently 13.

Three more generals have spoken out regarding the ineptitude of the Administration’s policy. That leaves one four-star on the ground in Iraq, and he is Laura Bush’s first cousin.

Former House Leader Tom DeLay has been indicted on gross mischief charges. The Sugarland police representative would not elaborate on the charges, but smirked a great deal when he was asked.

Just saw the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum expose' on CNN. For our freinds in Chicago, can I live vicariously through you? Please go to this fabulous exhibit and let me know. I would love to see this.

tempus, I always knew there was something "unnatural" in the way the preznit carries his dogs around a la Paris Hilton. Now we know Bush didn't "drop" Barney a while back. The poor thing was trying to escape.

Anjha, thanks for the link. What a cool website.

Put this in the "here we go again file". Bush is considering selling military manufacturing facilities to the UAE. Now, the friends of Osama can get all the "insider info" they want.

Maybe one of our trolls can explain to me why the Bushies love Islamic fundamentalists so much? Is it because fundamentalists just love other fundamentalists?

No, it is because oil money does "bidness" together.

On Dick Cheney's income...

The Cheneys donated just under $6.87 million to charity from the stock options and royalties from Mrs. Cheney’s books. That left about $1.9 million in income on which the Cheney’s owed $529,636 in taxes.

Over the year, the Cheneys paid $2,468,566 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments. As a result, the Cheneys are entitled to a refund of $1,938,930.

I'll let you guys know about the Freedom Museum - a friend of mine is on the staff! Sad to say, I hope it isn't a sign of the times that we now need a museum to educate people on what our civil rights are supposed to be.

I was out and about today; Best Buy was packed...40 minute wait in line; long lines in the grocery store; the video store had all the latest DVD's rented; gas stations were bursting at the seems; Home Depot was a zoo; traffic everywhere.
Who say's the economy is lousy...I do! It's Easter tomorrow, if don't get it today your screwed for tomorrow!

TIKI, It's not until next week, dang Easter weekend delays everything.

Well, somebody needs to finance the war in Iraq, I'm glad Cheney can help out....even if it does result in a huge tax dedcution for him later.

TIKI, make up an email address, if you don't want to leave your own. Otherwise, there shouldn't be anything stopping you from posting.
