Steve: have you been following Doonsbury these days. Choosing a college is not trivial. Incidentally, I do not seem to be capable of holding a grudge with even the completely whacked-out wingers that post on TLC. Just not in my nature I guess.
Posted by tempus at April 16, 2006 10:42 PMWhere is she deciding between? A smart guy like you, I'm guessing your daughter is looking at some good schools. As an alumn, let me suggest Duke. Don't let the current controversy sway you, it is a fantastic school and she would love it.
As always, thanks for your hard work.

Bob Jones U? She would need a great deal of luck, and possibly some serious deprogramming following graduation.
Posted by tempus at April 16, 2006 10:54 PMJust in case you missed it, being gay is good enough to get you thrown out of school at the University of the Cumberlands. Long ago- I went to this crazy little Southern Baptist school, and like the rest of our country- it has gone off the deep end of reactionary religious conservatism.
yuck.
Posted by BigRome at April 16, 2006 11:18 PMYayyyyy, I'm done with my taxes!! And quitting my job midyear to go back to school makes for the biggest refunds I've ever gotten.
My friend learned how to be a plastic surgeon at Duke. He did his undergrad at Michigan State, and got his medical degree from U of M, so Duke must be good. And he's a black guy, but never said anything bad about the place, present scandal notwithstanding.
Posted by Sharon at April 16, 2006 11:48 PMA relative of mine is on staff at Stanford. Another good school. Only problem with Bob Jones University is you have to sign a contract offering your first born to the Repubican Party.
Posted by Judith at April 17, 2006 04:12 AMJust to remind you how concerned the WH and KBR are about our troops, the drinking water that our troops have been drinking is contaminated. Okay, we all know that story, but did you also know that the showers these men/women take is untreated waste water. There have been outbreaks of sickness and skin sores, and long-term effect is unknown, if any. The water supply has been treated for the men and women of KBR, but instructions were given to not do the same for our troops. God, I hope there is a hell.

[Editor: ignore=off]Send your daughter to Embraceable U. Naaah, strike that; the U of VA is cool nowadays... students are protesting something, Latino oppression or women's rights or is it Iran?
Stevie, don't worry about Bush. Soon, we won't have anything to fret over because it'll ALL BE OVER! Iran will nuke us into oblivion.
Posted by Mal Feasance at April 17, 2006 05:38 AMGet the week started off right and speak your mind.
George W. Bush is an asshole.
Posted by snark at April 17, 2006 06:16 AMIf your daughter is interested in advanced studies in quantum theory, may I suggest ASU. It is a short walk from our house, and she is welcome to reside in the TIKI hut by the pool. For security, there are 9 large carved TIKI heads to ward off evil neocons.
You may also wish to consider the ever popular "party school", Wazzamadda U.
Posted by TIKI AL at April 17, 2006 06:21 AMI have a daughter at the Univ of Wisconsin, great school, and you cannot be at a more historically progressive University, going back to Robert LaFollette.
Posted by leftymn at April 17, 2006 06:24 AMI assume, given our current administration and their amazing ability to turn all that they touch into shit, that she's considered, after doing her undergrad work in the School of Hard Knocks, moving on to grad work at the University of Adversity, or perhaps the College of Calamity.
Posted by oppressmenot at April 17, 2006 06:33 AMWe have 4 degrees from Columbia University in our household and I wouldn't change a thing about my undergraduate experience there. A great place to get exposed to a truly international body of young adults.
Posted by snark at April 17, 2006 06:43 AMDonald duck von Rumsfeld is a lying, torturing, egomaniacal, blood-sucking, greedy, selfish, short-sighted, disgusting, freakaziod waste of human DNA. He should have done to him the very same cruel acts that he thinks are just fine to do to other human beings. Same to Gonzolez and the others who participate in authorizing torture, and them denying that they participated, stating that it was just "a few bad apples". This Administration has ZERO credibility, NO moral authority, NO right to denounce other countries for human rights violations, and they are putting our brave soldiers and citizens in grave danger.
Posted by oppressmenot at April 17, 2006 06:44 AMThere is no more obvious evidence of how quickly this nation is sliding towards the cesspool than the current knee-jerk reaction to the fringe lunatic Phelps' military funeral protests.
State legislators in numerous states are busy passing reactionary laws to thwart what a couple of dozen lunatics are doing. While I think that media attention to these losers is great. Such media attention can only serve to highlight lunacy of fringe right groups. These people call themselves a Baptist church. A fact that hopefully will lead genuine Baptist groups to speak up out of embarassment. However, I think the actions to outlaw what they are doing are more harmful to our country than the protests themselves. These freaks should be allowed to continue doing exactly what they are doing.
The remedy is worse than the disease.
Posted by snark at April 17, 2006 07:09 AMSteve - she's thinking about coming to Iowa right? Right?
What? What's so funny?
Anyway, if by fluke of absolute chance she's looking at an Iowa school, I'll be happy to chat with her.

Posted by idiosynchronic at April 17, 2006 07:15 AMThinking about this yesterday with our argument on gay families at the easter egg hunt -
What happened to the notion that those protesting entrenched or blantant discrimination needed to be of high dignity during the protest?
Obviously, it disappeared sometime in the 60's between black civil rights protestors and the predominantly white anti-war protests in the late 60's and early 70's. But why haven't we seen a return of (for lack of a better term) dignified protests? Men and women marching in Sunday best, singing hymns or walking in quiet conversation?
I wouldn't say it was a superior style of protest, but I'm interested as to why the decorum of protest changed.
(And no malice to you Tiki . . I just was busy with family all day.)
Posted by idiosynchronic at April 17, 2006 07:26 AMAhh, Good luck with her decision...tell her that to this day and many years later, that although I have no qualms/regrets about my own college choice or my profession, I still often say to myself ...What do I want to be when I grow up? It's certainly an exciting and anxiety producing time in her (and your) life..enjoy it and make the best of it.
If she up to a real challenge I suggest one of the service acadamies.
Posted by Avenger D-22 at April 17, 2006 09:56 AMit' a hard thing for a parent when a child has to make one of those big leaps into the world
whether it's getting on the bus to go to first grade
or
heading off to college.
you get thru it and so do they,
but not without some pain of loss.

I love my son and I sent him--or,rather, he decided to go--to the Naval Academy, and he has been well served by it and has remained a dedicated progressive. (And he learned how to spell academy.)
Also, Steve, tell her to take a look at Barnard--all the advantages of the best city in the world, a great Ivy League University, and the intense and nurturing atmosphere of a woman's college wrapped into one!!
Posted by Merle at April 17, 2006 11:03 AMFor those of you not obsessed with Illinois politics, Republican ex-Gov Ryan found GUILTY on all counts today. Racketeering, fraud, all those good things associated with the Culture of Corruption among the Republicans.
Posted by ann at April 17, 2006 11:14 AMAlso, Steve, tell her to take a look at Barnard...
Great school. And essentially you graduate with a Columbia University degree but you have the benefit of a much more personal experience with the Barnard administration.
Posted by snark at April 17, 2006 11:35 AMMerle, I'm partial to the Naval Academy, myself, and in any other time, with any other "leaders" it's a brave and honorable choice. The military academies are still not safe for women, though. I'd worry about my daughter being there unless she had a black belt and a shiv.
Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2006 11:59 AMThanks, Steve. Kind words. Good luck with the college hunt. I'm sure she'll do great.
Posted by muckdog at April 17, 2006 03:20 PMI vote UC Davis - very cool area and school. The rooming costs though :O

haha - I guess you paid your "Ghetto Pass" dues! That sounds funny. Hadn't heard shiv in ages.
