These guys are desperate and that scares me. What might the administration do next?

If the dems were doing what the repubs did today they would be cast as traitors.

Bush can pull every troop out of Iraq in September and order them all back in December. He can do whatever he wants to aid politics, and I'm sure he will. If the GOP loses the House, most of the WH will go to jail (the ones not already there). They know that. Look for all stops to be pulled out if The 32% President is still in the 30's by the time he gets back from his usual month long August vacation.

Just as we got into the war from a political agenda, the removal of troops because of a political agenda will once again endanger the remaining troops substantially. I want troops removed as much as anyone. The vision of slaughter on the ground of our troops and the Iraqis is today grating. No more shooting from the political hip. Protect the troops, support Iraq, MAKE A FUCKING PLAN!

Remember this:
Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt stood to announce that she'd just taken a call from a Marine colonel.

"He asked me to send Congress a message: stay the course," Ms. Schmidt said. "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do." She later withdrew the remarks, saying she meant no insult to the Pennsylvania Democrat.

REPIGS, and esp. you Ohio Repulsive-con Jean Schmidt, not only are YOU the cowards, you are hypocritical, lying bastards. "Stay the Course", unless, of course, the polls say otherwise.

The White House simply cannot give subpoena power to a Democratic House or Senate. Every last one of them will end up in jail or house arrest at Crawford, TX.

Since they’ve already jumped off the cliff, an Iranian bombing campaign is no big thing. Note how Syria lately has completely fallen off the war hype chart.

When the USA hits bottom, the White House declares martial law and makes George W Bush El Presidente for life. Revolution version 2 starts.

LIES: LIES: LIES: LIES.

The US isn't drawing down troops. They're building 4 -- count them, 4 brand new, super city bases in Iraq (on top of the new US Embassy in Baghdad) that will require military staffing in excess of what we have in Iraq now.

This junta may tell MSM the troop number is decreasing soon (just in time for an election, perhaps?), but the truth is, Iraq is ground zero for the new American empire in the region and empires need troops to survive.

i think you're right.

i would not be at all surprised if bush brought some troops home before the november elections.

and promised to bring even more home within an additional short period of time, say , a year.

the 2002 public "debate", aka propaganda campaign, about the "need" to invade iraq was for electoral purposes.

why wouln't a promised or actuial, partial withdrawal be similarly used.

Why does the phrase "Peace with honor" keep resounding in my ears?

Conspiracy Theory:

Wonder if it is possible for our trusted and esteemed repug leaders hatched a devious plan with the oil companies that would allow both of them to make billions in profits. It could go like this:

The oil companies agree to raise gas prices so high that everyone feels the pinch. Then they announce billions in profits to further fuel the population's mounting anger. They respond to nationwide criticism without apology or explanation. At this point their role is done (except for the payoff).

It's now phase II and the repugs turn to do their part. They call the citizens gas gluttons and berate them for relying on the only fuel that will work in their cars. They blame the oil companies, and demand an investigation. They appease the public by requiring the oil companies to pay millions /billions in windfall taxes for their greed.

The politicians win because they've found a way to tax the citizens and profit from their hardships. Even better, they do it without having to admit responsibility for raising taxes. The public believes that the administration protected them and won the battle against the oil companies by making them pay windfall taxes on their profits.

The oil companies win because they've made off with billions in profits. They get to keep their tax breaks and subsidies for a while longer. They can continue to keep the gas prices high. We'll be told that it's justified due to the windfall taxes they will pay on future profits.

Everyone wins but the consumers.
