Steve,

I recall that you made the statement in a previous post (something to the effect0 that iran was the greatest threat in the world today.

I am sure that you are as thankful that I am that the US Navy is moving to confront this (Iran) threat.

God's speed, US Navy!

Regards,

Bagley

Posted by Bagley at May 11, 2006 06:19 PM

You know, Iran has some pretty interesting equipment of their own.

I wonder how sinking a US asset would change things in 2006, assuming the MSM even reports it.

This entire dustup has been contrived by the Bush admin. Be a shame to send our troops to their deaths just so the moron can wear a flightsuit again.

Someone should be checking in with Gen. Paul Van Riper:

Van Riper was responsible for playing an enemy commander (i.e., Saddam) in a war game against U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf. In fact, it's an interesting story.

The Pentagon had anticipated that the United States, with its superior intelligence-gathering capabilities, its total informational superiority, and its carefully delineated leadership structures, would crush the enemy forces. But van Riper outfoxed them. Using surprise and low-tech solutions, he devastated the U.S. forces.

[W]hen van Riper talks about what he did — including a cruise-missile launch against the U.S. fleet — he says, "We'd done all the calculations on how many cruise missiles their ships could handle, so we simply launched more than that. …" Similarly, about his decision to communicate using lighting systems after his side's electronics technologies were knocked out, he says, "Any moderately informed person would know enough to not count on those technologies."

So should we listen to self-proclaimed military expert In-The-Bagley, or should we listen to a US Marine General who defeated the neo-conmen at their own game?

Posted by pessimist at May 11, 2006 07:25 PM

We should expect that all the assetts will move into place--I've been seeing anectdotal evidence all over the place for months. Yes, they will all get into place, but that does not mean the order will be given.

Only a berserk madman would attack Iran right now. Somehow I have faith that something, someone, will stop Bush from pulling that trigger.

He has no authorization at all, remember--he does not dare try. I think this shall pass--I hope it's not because I want it to be so much. Even Bush would not go that far.

Posted by paradox at May 11, 2006 07:56 PM

Actually, scuttlebutt has it that they are off to invade Qatar, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Yemen.

The CIA has absolute proof that all of them are secretly enriching tabouli, and may be harboring bin Laden’s fourth cousin once removed. Close enough.

They're trouble, dammit, and wouldn’t it look good before the mid-terms to capture that murderous 9-year old SOB!

Paradox, Bush is a berserk madman and yes he would go that far. If it is true that you can only predict future behavior by past behavior, then Bush is going to bomb Iran. God help us.

Harris Poll on tonight's WSJ Online has Bush at 29% job approval.

He's in free fall.

All Bush can do now is invade another country and cross his patrician fingers that this will rally support behind him.

Bagley, where exactly did I say that Iran was the greatest threat facing the world?

Posted by Steve Soto at May 11, 2006 10:14 PM

For a lame duck pResident with only 29% support, why is Bush continuing to act like he has 68% approval? How can he even think of bombing Iran with an approval percentage that low? Why is the GOP allowing this lame duck pResident to continue?
They haven't much to gain by continuing their support of this madman. What will it take to stop him?

Judith, you beat me to it. A beserk madman is on full view in the White House, surrounded by other madmen. It's incredible that no one has stopped them in over five years, and I can't see that anyone will. Bush may be suicidal at this point, hoping to meet his maker to hear what a good job he's done. But for sure it won't be the one he expected.

bagley is just misremembering. Or projecting. Or his brain has given out.

I think Nero Jr. and Condo were the ones recenting declaring that Iran is the greatest threat/challenge to stability in the world today.

A country that hasn't attacked a neighbor in five centuries. The Bushco rhetoric/reality discrepancy is astounding. Nero may very well hear voices from "God".

Posted by euzoius at May 12, 2006 06:32 AM

the first thing you'd do if you were going to attack Iran was pull your carriers OUT of the gulf -where they'd be sitting ducks for Iranian missiles. Unless, of course, faking or provoking, or allowing an attack on a carrier was your plan. That would be an act of war - giving the War President instant public support again. Don't think he'd go that far? I think you'd be wise to seriously consider it.

By GEORGE JAHN, Associated Press Writer
21 minutes ago

VIENNA, Austria - The U.N. atomic agency has found traces of highly enriched uranium at an Iranian site linked to the country's defense ministry, diplomats said Friday. The finding added to concerns that Tehran was hiding activities that could be used to make nuclear arms.
The diplomats, who demanded anonymity in exchange for revealing the confidential information, said the findings were preliminary and still had to be confirmed through other lab tests. But they said the density of enrichment appeared close to or beyond weapons grade — the level used to make nuclear warheads.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The brazeness of those beating the war drums never ceases to amaze. Here we see the AP suckered by who knows what intel shop spewing pre-invasion propaganda. I wonder if this "weapons grade uranium" is of the same quality as the WMD's Rummy asserted were located to the east, west, north and south of Baghdad? You remember, the ones he just knew positively existed and were one drone flight away from wiping out downtown Chicago? Murdering, genocidal bastards all oughta be hanging from a rope.
What makes me laugh is the meme going around that if Iran gets nuclear weopons then they are somehow a threat to Americans. The American people are mostly ignorant or fools to what the administration really is doing, which is a new phase of imperial mobilization cover-up by phoney rationals to scare people. Also, it's not just the current administration but also the Republican and Democratic parties that are behind this imperial expansion. The bickering behind the scenes is whether Iran will be as successful as Iraq. Will they be able to create conditions,like short term chaos to to break up a country or something else, to achieve results favorable to the American administration.
For the Rest of commentators:
I came to this Blog from another Blog. For a minute I thought I had reached a European blog. Why, because yesterday I watched a presentation which remined me of this blog.
The presentation, by Melanie Phillips, an English journalist working for The Guardian newspaper, discussed events in Europe, and England especially. Ms. Phillips indicated that the hatred of the US is so malevolent that people twist the good into bad and the bad into good. These people will do anything, work with anyone if it harms the US. Her Book Londonistan, is a timely reminder of what awaits us if we proceed down the English path.
Now I do not think the commentators on this blog hate the US. I do however think that your hatred of all things Bush has reversed the polarity in your morality meters.
If a burning desire to rescue my once great country from the NASCAR facists who have stolen it constitutes hate, then so be it.
...your hatred of all things Bush has reversed the polarity in your morality meters.
I think you are correct. We need to get our "morality meter" more in line with yours. We can start by fucking over the elederly, pregnant women, veterans, students, children and the poor. We'll then start yelling "Get a fucking job, you bum," at the needy. We can then devise a plan to make the wealthy even wealthier, and the poor even poorer.
We'll inherit vast wealth and claim we "made it on our own," look down on those who didn't "make it on their own," and end the social institutions that helped people "make it" on their own. We can then start valuing money over anything else, so much so that even our own families don't matter any longer. We can buy new tits, asses and teeth for our bleach blond bimbo trophy wives, and dump them when they demand more than a credit card from the relationship (like an erect penis or kindness).
We'll continue our meter adjustment by making our children vacuous fucks with no social conscience, no personality, and no moral standards or intelligence. We'll complete our meter adjustment by electing criminals to office, agreeing that torture and rendition is necessary. We'll start Sieg Heiling the president gasman as the country is looted for the benefit of his cronies. All the while agreeing that death and destruction is the new paradigm, and labeling those who don't want wars based on lies and deceit as Broke Back Mountain Hollywood liberal faggots, or unpatriotic, or anti-American, or traitors. Our meters will then be reset to your meter.
Probably a better and easier thing to do would be to tell you you are an irrational fuck-stick who needs to get your head out of your ass, wipe the shit out of your eyes, and see what the fuck is happening to your country...you Nazi sympathizing slime bag fuck-wad.
Please write in your memoirs that you supported the neo-cons. I want your grandchildren to hate your guts as much as Jews hated the warders at Treblinka or Dachau. I hope you get better.
jondee,
Amazingly, you can make a post without resorting to vile insults. Congratulations!
"... people like you who are still so thouroghly imbued with tribal dementia.."
How so? Specifics please.
Do you not see the threats the Western World faces: or is it acceptable to you that the Iranian leadership is publically calling for the destruction of Israel; that the Muslim world rejoices in the fall of the World Trade Center (on the second attempt); that "tribalists" hack the heads off civiliams while screaming "God is great." That people of your political persuasion are enablers of these barbarians. (Perhaps it is just another multi-culti...we just have to understand them....sing Kumbayah....their beliefs are just as valid as any other....type of thought process.....)
Hmmmm...interesting; who are the tribalists/ Who are their enablers?
"....have abnegated their free will and capacity for independent, creative thought."
Not me. That is more characteristic of Leftists. I am a Conservative.
Bagley - By what God given right did we engineer a coup to overthrow the democratically elected leader in Iran in the fifties, setting in motion a chain of events leading to the increased anti-western militancy of the Mullahs and the overthrow of the propped-up Shah? The impotent ( Israel has 200 warheads, or hadnt you heard?) call for "the destruction of Israel" is the Iranian equivalent of Bush's moronic, grandstanding "axis of evil" rhetoric - the difference being that the U.S actually has the firepower to back it up, which makes Bush's escalatory diplomacy even more irresponsible. Some in "the Muslim world", not the entire Muslim world - as the demonizing, warmongers would have us believe - celebrated the destruction of the WTO, as did some in the non-Muslim world, including apparently some traveling "art students" in a parked van who subsequently left the country after being briefly detained. And crying "Im a conservative" while blowing off a little kids head with a cluster bomb is no more civilised than what any jihadist does. People of your persuasion: nationalist, traditionalist, benighted, scared, xenophobes are the ennablers of ALL barbarians. In the U.S, Iraq, Iran, the Germany of 50 years ago, and just about every other place and time. All you care about is whether the barbarians are on YOUR side; not the eradication of barbarism. Btw, I've noticed that your boys have gone into melt-down mode; Im making a note to send you a case of hankies, you're gonna need em.
Hell, I bet even the democrats would applaude such bold action.
