Yes this is an outrage. Clearly Cheney has something to hide that would cripple his presidency. The Media Tool of the GOP will stifle any public outcry on this. The Dems should scream from the highest hill, but their fear of the Media Tool will probably hush them quickly. Sad state we have.
Posted by T2 at November 14, 2003 08:12 AMA disgrace. This can't be allowed to stand. Hopefully, Cleland and Roemer will right a dissenting report, and the victims' representatives will start cutting some TV ads payed for by Move On.
Posted by Paleo at November 14, 2003 08:14 AMI'm curious about the statement that George might have been drunk at the ranch. Is he the teetotaler president, of is there some basis to the statement.
Just curious.
Frank
No no no, you have it all wrong. Our president is a straight shooter. I know because he said so. They're only editing stuff so those evil Democrats can't take anything out of context.
Posted by Sharp Left Turn at November 14, 2003 08:19 AMIs there anyone--I mean anyone--who actually believes that story about Bush choking on a pretzel and passing out?
Please. Bush got falling down drunk, really did fall, and got a hell of a bruise. Which he lied about, of course.
That's where the reference about being drunk on the ranch comes from.
Bush gets a total skate on his atrocious "recovery" record because all real recovering drunks will never, ever call him on it.
To survive their disease they must remain anonymous. No one will come forward to say how terrible Bush's "recovery" is becuase it's life-threatening. It's not hyperbole.
Anonymity in recovery has nothing to do with privacy. It keeps the alchoholic away from literally deadly ego traps.
Posted by paradox at November 14, 2003 08:33 AMrotten fucking bastards.
man, I'm pissed off.
you would think that there would be some repubs that aren't flaming assholes like the rest and want the truth for the sake of the country.
rot in hell george bush.
This is disgusting. No accountability whatsoever.
Posted by Paul in OC at November 14, 2003 09:23 AMThe bigger outrage is that we will not see your headline "9/11 Commission Deal Allows White House to Edit Presidential Daily Brief" on any major newspaper in the United States.
Note that I've stripped the "Outrage" leaving a perfectly valid just-the-facts headline and could be followed by a perfectly just-the-facts news report, but it...will...not...happen.
Well, maybe the Star-Tribune. But they're shrill.
Posted by doesn't matter at November 14, 2003 09:35 AMWhen we knew that Lee Hamilton of Iran-Contra "fame" was appointed to this Commission, we should have smelt a rat.He is the ultimate enabler of those in power.he carried water for Reagan in the Iran-contra affair, carried water for Bush the elder in the Savings and Loan scandal and now is carrying water for Bush the younger.
Is our country that produced the likes
of Sam Ervin,Peter Rodino and Barbara Jordan, become a nation of imbeciles? I am afraid to answer.
Watergate is an apt analogy for the current situation. This is truly a Constitutional crisis, the likes of which this country hasn't seen since its earliest days.
The difference now is that the only principle the GOP follows, unlike many of the Republicans in Congress in 1974, is "the end justifies the means." There is no "higher" - that is, non-party - principle that overrides partisan activities. The True Conservatives who in 1974 rose to their Constitutional duty of protecting the country, once it was no longer doubtful that Nixon betrayed the nation, its traditions, and the Constitution, are nowhere evident today.
It's beginning to look like Washington was correct in his Farewell Address. Party politics is indeed the ruination of America - and we only have ourselves to blame for this. WE elected Reagan and gave him free rein. We elected Poppy and allowed him to continue his nefarious activities. We allowed the Righty Whirrlitzer to paint Al Gore in a negative light without protest, giving Bush a chance at victory.
I was until very recently sure that this country would follow the path of 1789 France. I'm becoming more convinced daily that we are on the path of Tsarist Russia. This is not to say that we will undergo a Communist revolution, but that the military of the country will be unleashed upon us by our government should we demand change.
Posted by pessimist at November 14, 2003 11:57 AMWOW! What a surprise? Really, people, did we expect anything less from GWB (RIH)? We are only kidding ourselves in doing so.
Ashcroft is in charge of this investigation. He may as well be looking for WMD's because he'll find neither the "leaker" nor WMD's.
Hopefully with this new spine that seems to be evolving in, at least, the Senate Dem's, we can begin some sort of offensive against this junta. This is the first time in quite a while I don't feel ashamed of the Dems.
Posted by golfkid at November 14, 2003 12:41 PMIt's a sign of the times, perhaps, that "Outrage" is no longer the stuff of headlines; the outrages multiply by the day. Perhaps soon "Sane move from Bush administration" will be headline news.
No matter how much I want this SOB gone, I keep waking up hoping they'll do something rational. None of us have much time before, all of a sudden, we find ourselves embroiled in a Clash o' Civilizations accompanied by a not-so-Great Depression.
Posted by Matt Davis at November 14, 2003 03:50 PMSecrecy is the enemy of a democracy.
This is wholly unacceptable. There is some suggestion that the deal will not go through, and we should scream loud and hard.
The reason given for the "editing" is absurd -- we don't want to bore the commisssion with intelligence about other stuff. Only two commission members can see all the (edited) documents to begin with, and two more can see selected (edited) documents? Huh?
I'm so furious I'm speechless.
Posted by Tom Burka at November 14, 2003 06:59 PMIt's a sign of the times, perhaps, that "Outrage" is no longer the stuff of headlines; the outrages multiply by the day.
It's like a popularly supported coup! The population is only too happy to grant impunity on its illegitimate leaders! Just think about the consecuences: 270 million people divided along ethnic, religious, political, social, economic, geografic, urban, suburban, rural, philosophical lines. Maybe 50 million of them care. It's not a promising recipe for the future.
Posted by kngdvd at November 14, 2003 07:27 PMI've been wondering for months just what will it take to get the people really pissed off at these people. I'm beginning to think there's nothing bad enough (wait maybe we can get a film of W getting a BJ) that would surely do it. 911 stuff isn't doing it, outing the CIA agent didn't make a ripple, 20 zillion lies about Iraq haven't done it', 500 billion dollar deficits ain't doing it, 3 million lost jobs (everybody yawns). The post above suggesting maybe 50 million care may be way high. Might have to start buying my wine by the gallon. Cheers???

such certainty over a figure of speech. Such . . . inventory-taking.......
I prefer Molly Ivins ( Bushwhacked )::
Bush has a chemical-dependency problem, but it's not cocaine. It's Monsanto, Dow, and Union Carbide. They wrote the checks that put him in the Texas governor's mansion...Posted by degustibus at November 14, 2003 09:26 PM
Am I alone in assuming that Bush & Co wish to edit the PDB because it convicts them of treason?
Posted by Jake at November 14, 2003 10:30 PMi will be interesting to see if any Democratic Candidates speak out on this..
I bet we hear about this from Gen Clark on MTP.
This is outrageous
Posted by smartone at November 15, 2003 06:14 AMWhy am I not surprised?
It looks like the commission to investigate 9/11 is shaping up to be another Warren commission.
I doubt they'll ever let us know what really happened.
