Army captain turned Baptist preacher, William Miller said the world would end between Mar 23, 1843 and Mar 23, 1844. When nothing happened, he changed the date to Oct 22, 1844.
By this time he had 50,000 followers who gave away their possessions, and bought ascension robes from him. After the "great disappointment", Miller kept setting another date every year, and continued to sell ascension robes until he died. (Doomsday: Book of Revelation, NGC, Sat nite)
I now understand how 59 million rubes voted for Bush.
Posted by TIKI AL at May 21, 2006 05:57 AMThis morning I woke up and turned on the Discovery Channel only to find a religious program featuring Jimmy Swaggart. You remember him: the cry-baby sinner/preacher of years past who fell from grace for his penchant for getting caught with his pecker out of his pants with whores and prostitutes?
Any way, he was hawking his latest christian wares to his followers: 2 Bibles and 2 CD's for $240 bucks. Yeah, I said $240 dollars. There was a discount if you ordered 5 Bibles and 5 CD's at one time.
Now you know why I consider myself an agnostic. I owe a great deal of thanks to the likes of Swaggart, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Bakker, and all the rest of those assholes have opened my eyes to the Truth.
Posted by Hank at May 21, 2006 06:19 AMHank: Did Jimmy have any close outs on ascension robes? It could be a tip off to the "big day".
I am also an agnostic. I would become an atheist, but that would require faith.

Damn it, TIKI. Give a warning. I spit coffee all over the computer again.

False Christian? An exclusionary.
In case Carpetbagger hasn't seen this, I wanted to bring attention to it:
nother War Fraud
Yesterday the NY Post ran this headline: "4th Reich: Iran Law Labels Jews."
Too bad the NY Post doesn't hire fact checkers. Because according to Juan Cole, Informed Comment, Iran has no law requiring religious minorities to wear badges or otherwise publicly identify themselves. This is part of a black psy-ops operation to demonize Iran and raise support for war.
Millions of people read the NY Post and other papers and websites, such as Drudge, which also picked up this phony story. The Bush administration has already lied us into one unnecessary war at great cost in lives and treasure. I hope this faker news will be widely debunked and that Carpetbagger will help debunk it. Juan Cole has tried to follow the story to its origins. Perhaps you can add to that?
