The New Iraq government may have concluded that they want their country back from the invader infidel. They may have concluded that the continued killing of uncounted countrymen so the United States president could show his daddy he is a successful son is really not in their best interests.
Posted by T2 at May 31, 2006 09:09 AMCould they really hate us any more than they do right now? And yet no more 9/11s. Makes a girl think.

Posted by steve duncan at May 31, 2006 09:20 AMImagine, if you will, that Dubya had selected James Baker to chair his VP search committee.
I firmly believe that if, instead of Pacemaker Dick coming back with a recommendation to tap the selfsame Pacemaker Dick for the Vice Presidency, everything turns out quite differently. Yes, the administration would still have been staffed top-to-bottom with evildoers. But they would've been competent evildoers. Say what you will about Baker; the man had evildoing down to a science.
Instead, the administration started with Cheney (which of course meant Rummy, too), and went on to staff pretty much every position—with the possible exception of the original Secretary of State—with batshit lunatic Republicans, who shared the Bakerite commitment to doing evil, but were too lazy to do their homework. A bunch of three-martini-lunch-at-AEI cronies who had never, ever been right about anything. Ever.
This is why I believe that although Bush is wildly unfit to hold the Presidency, it is really Cheney who is most to blame for the current state of affairs. A figurehead presidency could have been much, much less of a failure, if he had actually been surrounded by really competent underlings.

Posted by dj moonbat at May 31, 2006 10:07 AMSquandered or wasted it doesn't matter since this has been an exercise in futility. Why don't we get that these are sovereign countries of their own and don't need our permission? As the only country to use the bomb and still thinks it was okay, we really don't have the moral authority to tell other countries that it is wrong.
Sometimes the public frightens me just as much as the bozos running the country. Into the ground.
Posted by Debra at May 31, 2006 10:07 AMUm, as Madeleine Albright said on The Daily Show....think of the message Bushco sent to all countries with the invasion of Iraq. You know Bushco invaded a country that posed no threat, had no wmd's, or nuclear weapon capability, as opposed to say one that actually did such as North Korea.
The main henchman leading Bushco are no more interested in diplomacy with Iran then they are in finding Osama Bin Laden and withdrawing troops from Iraq. It's all for appearance sake...Bush can't wait to show his macho swagger and git him his next War on.
Posted by emal at May 31, 2006 02:15 PMIs it possible that this is another feint by the lying liars? Remember, they decided that the best way to get their Iraq war on was to go through the UN first. After all, this is the same Condi who in April 2002 had dinner with her counterpart from the UK and as he said:
I had dinner with Condi on Tuesday; and talks and lunch with her an NSC team on Wednesday (to which Christopher Meyer also came). These were good exchanges, and particularly frank when we were one-on-one at dinner. I attach the records in case you want to glance....Condi’s enthusiasm for regime change is undimmed. But there were some signs, since we last spoke, of greater awareness of the practical difficulties and political risks.
We know that they plotted on how to make Saddam the one who started the fight.
Today, who's to say that this isn't yet another extremely cynical ploy to build the case that Bush has done everything he could (such a diplomat) so when he bombs Iran it is Iran's fault?
Posted by Mary at May 31, 2006 11:32 PMJesus tap-dancing Christ. I swear to God, I never thought I would live to see left-wing, liberal Democrats turn in to cheerleaders for a bunch of fucking Persian Nazis who swear up and down that they want to exterminate the Jews of Israel. You people are unfucking-believable.
