this poll’s sample had the highest number of self-identified conservatives (38%) in almost a year-and-a-half, while tying the poll’s lowest number of self-identified liberals (18%).
Well, what's really interesting about that would seem to be that a lot of conservatives are now unwilling to identify themselves as Republicans. Man, they're going to have trouble holding that coalition together over the next few years.
Posted by dj moonbat at August 8, 2006 01:09 PMI noticed that too. It seems a lot evangelical conservatives who still "like Bush" are going to vote Democratic this fall, and no longer identify as Republican.
Posted by Elrod at August 8, 2006 01:27 PMI'd say the 40% approval is based on the Lebanon War.
A CNN poll showed only 44% of Americans think Israel should agree to an immediate ceasefire, according to Voice of America article dated Aug 7.
Our military-loving people love to watch planes use high tech weaponry to bomb the shit out of evil terrorists and people who they are told are associated with evil terrorists. And all that "terrorist infrastructure" like public bridges, highways, airports and apartment buildings.
They also strongly support whatever Israel does.
And this approval over this satisfying display of militarism and exciting military power redounds to the benefit of the bellicose Bush.

I'm not sure if the Israel-Lebanon thing has anything to do with it. People still disapprove of Bush's handling of the Lebanon-Israel conflict - even though they seem to agree with Bush that a cease fire is a bad idea. Bush is still toxic. I think the sample says it all. More evangelicals = more support for Bush.
Posted by Elrod at August 8, 2006 01:29 PMBush is still toxic.
Still dumb as a board too!
Let's not forget that.
Posted by snark at August 8, 2006 01:46 PMWhat this country desperately needs is to completely clean out the filth that is in Washington DC.
Every crook in Washington that does not specifically represent their constituents (and I do not count corporations as such), should be sent home packing, no looking back. Every time one of them comes back to "lobby", our Representatives should run away screaming, knowing that they will feel the pain at the polls when we find out.
We need to take our country back! Separate politics and money, hell separate the damn branches of government!!
Revoke a corporations "right" as an individual, that is the greatest hoax perpetrated on us all.
Posted by 007age at August 8, 2006 01:51 PMWhen you've got a two-term president, a 40% approval in his 6th year ain't exactly anything to crow about. Here is the number, which has continued to rise, that says the most about Bush and his GOP enablers - 70+% say the country is headed in the wrong direction.
