Nice post, pess. Too bad it's been trolled already by the TheoBot.

My birthday is the anniversary of Fat Man's detonation in Nagasaki. It's always been sobering to think about, but this year I had to explain it to my seven year-old son who was worried about the TV images he saw talking about the atomic bombings and why they were being shown.

What's far more ominous than our singular status as the only nation that has ever inflicted sun-like heat on our fellow humans is the current, aggressive and, of course, mostly unreported push to develop smaller nukes that can be used in further illegal wars of choice and domination.

The Woflewitz, Perle, Rummy/Cheney etc. crowd of New American Imperials are just itching to finally get to use their wet dream weapons and show those ragheads and "Old Europeans" that it's time to bow deeply and drop their drawers.

It must be so frustrating for the poor dears to have all those consequences associated with using full scale nukes! They've already spent billions, without oversight, on programs to design and build "battlefield nookular weapons" and, one of their favorites, "bunker busters" so that no one can hide from their awesome power. What an insane concept!

In his current mental state, I have little doubt that Kowboy George would give the finger to the button (and the world) in a 9/11 minute. It's the last level of abject failure he has yet to try and, I hope, he's running out of time.

It's a shame to think we survived the Cold War only to face nuclear anihilation begun by a group of pathologically insane, chicken hawk, post-college (but never grown up) boys and girls who are kept as useful idiots by a group of pathologically venal plutocrats, aided and abetted by a group of singularly thoughtless and irresponsible media organizations. I like to think I've stumbled into an alternate universe and, somewhere, there is a rational world in which the United States isn't the greatest danger to world peace. I want to find my way back!

Thoughtful piece Pess. Two thoughts came to mind, one of my favorite books is The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, by Richard Feynman. His perception of how life works of course led him to physics and the Manhatttan Project and he speaks eloquently of his scientific approach to what his team knew would be the impact of their work.

More close to home, I went to Japan some 25 years ago and happened to visit the small town where the Japanese survivors of the bomb had gone to live out their tortured lives. As you walked the small streets everywhere you looked were people that had lived and survived, their bodies ravaged. When they looked me in the eye, which was every time I passed one in the street or a shop, their eyes were piercing they never looked away from me.

Standing on those streets it was hard to reach Truman or Feynman's moral high ground. It is the gap between those streets and Truman's decision which I believe is the true moral high ground.

Totally, totally off topic: Dolly Parton is dead from congestive heart failure.

Posted by Mal Feasance at August 9, 2006 07:27 AM

the misapplied tug at the heartstrings of fellow miscreants has not arrested the inexorable drive to excise the malignity.

The Mad King, idiot son of George, is the first president ever, in 230 years, to allow an attack on an ally to go unanswered. And you support that. Telling. Very Telling.

The maudlin left may eat up that sort of moral deviance

You remake christ in your own image, live your life nothing as he did, and revile those your christ tells you to love and care for. All in the hope that he will spread his great jewel-encrusted foreskin over you when you die. You are a piece of work! Who would jesus nuke?

staging photoshoots of children's bodies brutalized by their own illslamic intransigence

And no more connected to reality than someone in a schizophrenic break with reality. My god are your children and grandchildren going to revile you for the horror you are.

This bit of sheer poetry is mine.

Dolly Parton is dead from congestive heart failure.

Is this a very veiled joke?

Posted by ann at August 9, 2006 07:34 AM

Dolly Parton is dead from congestive heart failure.

Are you sure the "Dolly" who died didn't have 4 teats and was cloned?

Posted by phidipides at August 9, 2006 07:56 AM

And aren't things going swimmingly well in Eye-raq? Somehow, the 4,000 troops needed to quell the violence in Baghdad is now up to 12,000. Something tells me things are about to 'pop' in Iraq-etnam.

Posted by phidipides at August 9, 2006 08:13 AM

C'mon, phid, you can say Civil War, can't you?

*cev-el wor*

Very good!

Mal - c'mon man, tell us what's up.

Posted by idiosynchronic at August 9, 2006 08:23 AM

Dolly's personal portrait painter, Piccasso, revealed that she had only 3 teats.

Posted by TIKI AL at August 9, 2006 08:25 AM

The cloned Dolly died in 2003, didn't she? And the real Dolly was looking kinda odd the last appearances I saw. Poor thing, if true, I kinda liked her.

I didn't know "Lady With Three Jugs" was a portrait of her!

Posted by snark at August 9, 2006 08:31 AM

Piccasso also painted Laura Bush, Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld in the Oval Office, entitled "Lady With Three Jugheads".

Posted by TIKI AL at August 9, 2006 08:53 AM

"Lady With Three Jugheads"

That must have been during his 'blue' period. The level of abstraction makes it difficult to discern exactly what the lady is doing with the tree jugheads.

C'mon, phid, you can say Civil War, can't you?

Duh! Oh, uh? Civilian war? You know, like the Nazi-railites in Israel! Civil war...civil war! I get it. We took Baghdad in April 2003, and by God we can take it again in August 2006 if we have to!

Between the shi'ite death squads, the sunni death squads, and the American funded government death squads, this should be easy. Let me see, I bet they can break the record of 1,600 civilians dead with drill holes punched in their heads in July by a whole bunch. It'll be tough without those Marines raping and burning little girls, maybe we can get them suited back up, but I'm stll betting on our team in the playoffs even without our star forwards. We'll just do all the military-aged males! Tee hee! Anyone want the 2,500 tortured to death square for August in the office pool?

But it all comes at a republi-con cost! Namely, cut the funding to The Brain Injury Center, devoted to treating and understanding war-related brain injuries! I think this is wise. We paid to get them brain injured, why the hell can't they step-up to the plate and pay for their own fucking research? At $215 million a day spent in Iraq, it's the least these lazy lay-about brain injured veterans can do for America.

I gotta go polish my Hum-Vee and bitch about gas and drilling in ANWR to get gas for the family truckster. Fucking neo-cons and republi-cons. I could literally reach up their assholes and pull their tongues past their rectums. Worthless vile fucks, each and everyone of them.

Whoops. I set him off. Sorry folks.

I wonder if you left-wing nut jobs would have gone down and "enlisted" if we had to carry out our invasion plan of the Japanese islands during WW2.

Maybe this horrific weapon had its intended purpose, time and place? Hopefully, it will never be used again by TERRORIST groups that you nuts seem to embrace and make excuses for.

What a bunch of worthless people you are.

Let's see, who are the biggest perpetrators of terror these days? The US and Israel...

Indeed, let's do everything we can in our powers so that these US and Israeli TERRORIST groups never use nuclear weapons!

Remember, liberals won that war in 3.5 years...and developed the bomb. Big fucking liberals. Keep that in mind. The other option might have been to let jackoffs like you do it...and you couldn't have done it. Still can't.

Posted by phidipides at August 9, 2006 05:58 PM

pessimist,

You are just so nice to me.

Such a long rambling, dis-connected, and sophmoric post, but containing -- near the very beginning! -- a quotation that sums up the position of the Leftists in this war on terror:

"In the thick of war, people assign rigid places to good and evil, always to the benefit of one's own side."

And knowing the side that the Leftists have chosen as the United States fights Islamic terrorism is now so very clear.
