In North Carolina, there is an indictment against a civilian contractor who beat a detainee with a flashlight in Afganistan.
This explains why the Bush admin wants to amend the War Crimes act.
This is going to be a rough ride until January when a new congress is sworn in.

How did Homeland Security allow Ned Lamont to run in the primary? Wasn't the NSA alerted to his candidacy? Thank God the terrorists plot to blow up planes exiting England was discovered now. If it had been hatched after a Lamont victory, say in 2007, they'd have never been caught. I have it on good authority should he win Ned is in line for a prime postion on the Armed Forces Committee in the new Democratic majority Senate. His aides are drawing up a policy proposal for unilateral disarmament and surrender in Afghanistan and Iraq along with unfettered sales of highly refined bomb grade plutonium to Iran. Curses to the citizens of Connecticut!! How could they despise America so much, unleashing Satan's love child on America just when it needed Joe Lieberman's undivided efforts most? Oh, the humanity.............!!!

The biggest problem is that the journalists/reporters simply don't know (or refuse) to even mildly challenge whatever story/narrative/spin that their happy subject is delivering to them.
Reporters come armed with a set of prepared questions (perhaps even cleared by the interviewee in advance), receive the talking points, don't ask any questions that one skeptical of the talking points might ask, and end the interview. They're as scary as bunnies.
No wonder the "guest" propagandanist (government official or politician) now invariably beams and says "Happy to be with you!" (I'm so sick of hearing that phrase.)
Case in point: "Independent-Democrat" Lieberman on PBS last night.
Why is he running: importance of bipartisanship. (No questions about value of bipartisanship when Dem party has no power, level of bipartisanship shown by Republicans, how bipartisanship could advance the interests of CT voters in this environment)
Why did he lose: Distortion of his record, especially Iraq (No question on how his record was distorted, how distortion could have happened when Lieberman outspent opponent by almost 3-1)
Who opposed him: extremists in the party. (No questions about what the positions of the "extremists" are, how the majority of CT Dems can be described as "extremist")
During the interview Joe(I) described his Iraq position---identical to Nero's. This complete agreement with Bushco policy not even mentioned by reporter, even though Lieberman was declaring throughout the whole thing how he really opposes Nero)
And this was PBS.
As long as the media appearances are simply risk free opportunities to deliver your propaganda unchallenged by reporters, Americans will remain clueless, and the effort to get them up to speed immeasurably more difficult.
For Republicans, ignorance is strength.
Posted by euzoius at August 10, 2006 05:47 AMThe neocons are freaked out.
Dick "Fatty" Cheney labeled the loss of Holy Joe as a victory for "al Qaeda types."
I'm sure the good voters of Connecticut enjoy their Vice President calling them terrorists because the Bush junta didn't get its way.
Posted by Christopher at August 10, 2006 05:57 AMWell we've got our story of the day.
More plots to blow up airliners.
They're calling it a well developed plot.
Posted by snark at August 10, 2006 06:08 AMZombie Chertoff was on for 20 minutes doing his utmost best to scare people, then he actually said: "Have a good flight."
Hahahahahaha! You can't make this stuff up!
Posted by Christopher at August 10, 2006 06:21 AMthe air plot will serve to bury the growing story on the Lamont ramifications as well as the upcoming 2600th GI death in Iraq.
This may well be an actual plot uncovered, and if so, kudos to the British for stopping it. But with the US killing Iraqis on a daily basis and the US/Israel axis of liberty bombing Lebanon back to the stone age, why wouldn't we expect an upsurge in terrorist activity directed toward the US? Bush making us safer? Clearly the opposite is true.
Here's a POV:
My wife asked me last night, "Who's this Lamont person and why's he a single-issue candidate?"
Let's see the media go out of their way to correct this portrayal anytime soon. *laughs* *sobs*
She at least did follow this with a rant on Loserman for being an ass.
Posted by idiosynchronic at August 10, 2006 06:42 AMAs usual we get more intelligent information from a non-American media source.
From the BBC;
He also said the plan "revolved around liquids of some kind".
"Officials say the explosives would have been sophisticated and extremely effective," our correspondent said.
Sophisticated effective ‘liquid of some kind”.
But I thought we were degrading the terrorist networks ability to coordinate sophisticated attacks? Aren't they all hiding in caves?
The decision to take action had been taken on Wednesday night, he added.
According to BBC sources the "principal characters" suspected of being involved in the plot were British-born. There are also understood to be links to Pakistan.
British-born. So much for the fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here.
Bushco. Leadership, 5+ years of radicalizing the world!
Pakistan eh? Good thing we’ve got our man in charge over there!
BBC home affairs correspondent Andy Tighe said police sources had told him they had found "interesting items" which were being examined.
Interesting items! I wonder if any of those items include ‘sophisticated effective liquids of some sort?
I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out.
But seriously, good on the Brits! And they've managed to avoid shooting any innocent people in the head so far.
stupid brits; they treat terrorism like a law-enforcement matter. no wonder they never stop any plots.
Posted by benjoya at August 10, 2006 07:10 AMAnd why is it that all American airports don't have walk through explosive detection 'sniffers' almost five years after the September 11th attacks?
Oh, right!
Because the top 1% need more tax breaks.
Posted by snark at August 10, 2006 07:18 AMstupid brits; they treat terrorism like a law-enforcement matter. no wonder they never stop any plots.
At least they stopped a Brazilian electrician from getting to work.

On the contrary. They performed a summary execution. I beleive that constitutes 'the easy way'.
Posted by snark at August 10, 2006 08:14 AMVous n'êtes pas le contrarian, aujourd'hui? Ha!
Posted by iamcoyote at August 10, 2006 08:23 AMCurses to the citizens of Connecticut!!
I've been thnking the same thing. My suspicions are that Connecticut is a hot bed of Islamofascism. I'm thinking we need to cordon-off the entire state and keep an eye on these people. Those without proper identification and republi-con or independent voter registrations will not be allowed to exit. It will keep them all clumped together so that the death squa...I mean, proper law enforcement officals, can keep an eye on them.
At least they stopped a Brazilian electrician from getting to work.
Wait till you see what homeland security does to the Connecticut-stanis, being the Islamofascists they are. They don't have nukes, do they? That would mean we have to talk to them.
Interesting items! I wonder if any of those items include ‘sophisticated effective liquids of some sort?
Diet Coke and Mentos, no doubt.
Posted by phidipides at August 10, 2006 09:22 AMDiet Coke and Mentos, no doubt.
That explains tha ban on all soft drinks and all carry-on snacks. It makes perfect sense . . after all, why should theatres, amusement parks, and sport arenas get all the monopoly action?
Posted by idiosynchronic at August 10, 2006 09:59 AMhere in NYC we've recently seen an influx of Connecticutstanis fleeing persecution. most of them live in Little Connecticut (aka the Upper East Side).
Posted by benjoya at August 10, 2006 10:10 AMhere in NYC we've recently seen an influx of Connecticutstanis
Damnit! There go the property values. They'll setup restaurants with their weird foods and follow weird customs at home. They'll be having marches where they throw around nutmeg and carry posters with the image of their Ayatollah, Lamont. Be very careful and vigilant. We all know those Connecticutstanis want your white women!
Posted by phidipides at August 10, 2006 10:32 AMThe Lieberman loss in the primary will be the beginning of a 3rd political party in the U.S..
Let's see where the money comes from for his "independent" bid. My guess it will be corporate and lots of it. I also think he along with Greenspan, H. Clinton, McCain, Murdoch and others will join forces before the next presidential electiom to form this new "centrist" party. And if he wins the fall election, will become the first member of Congress of this party.
I haven't heard of a name for this party, but let me submit a potential name for it - The Corpaorate Fascist Party (CFP). If it does become a reality thats what it will be.
The Republican party will be left with the Christianists and the Democratic party will become a true secular liberal party again. Maybe that wouldn't be so bad after all.
A(li)quida has discovered the secret to Ice 9!!! (a terror message to all of you Vonigut fans)
So, how hard would it be to put a bomb of liquids into checked in lugage?
"Zombie Chertoff was on for 20 minutes doing his utmost best to scare people, then he actually said: "Have a good flight."
Christopher, I saw that also and fell off my chair laughing. Who writes this crap?
Posted by Judith at August 10, 2006 06:10 PMAccording to the savants at Powerline, Mike Wallaces use of the term "Zionist state" is a "socialistic, Islamofascist" code-word. And the librul MSM is up to it's old tricks again. Apparently no one ever clued these moronic, rightards into the fact that the term zionist state has been employed by hundreds of thousands of Israelis and Jewish Americans since Herzel first set pen to paper. If we cant beat these self-collapsing vortex's of stupidity and brutality it could only be because of some deeply ingrained, subconscious form of masochism.
