Comments: McGovern and Polk Iraqi Withdrawal Plan [Harper’s]

What a complete fucking quagmire.

There are no good options, not for US at least...as defined by the term "quagmire." Frankly, this plan, like the rest, contains its own seeds of failure. A muslim security force? You really think they aren't gonna take Sunni/Shia sides? You really think the Kurds aren't going to create their own little nation state?

To quote Aerosmith: DREAM ON.

T"he truth is ever since the invasion the US sailed over the cliff of an almost unimaginable horrifying disaster, and is still gaining speed on the whistling plummet down. The country is going to have to take terrible wounds on the crashes down, smash after horrifying smash, in ways completely out of its control".

So we need, now, in no uncertain terms, to superglue the blame for this exactly where it belongs, squarely on the heads of George W. Bush and company.

Sure......Rove will eat McGovern alive. The Dems need new leaders, not recycled ones.
p.s. I voted for McGovern

On the other hand, it is a nice change to see a fantastical plan that has both the form of a plan (in that it has actual steps) and involves getting our troops out of harm's way. As opposed to the fantastical plan we are currently using, "staying the course" (or is it "adapting to win"?) until "victory."

I mean, if you're going to have a plan that has little or no connection to objective reality, you might as well have one that has us leaving, right?

Meanwhile, as the rest of us try to figure out something that might actually work, perhaps someone could get Mssrs. McGovern and Polk some nice cups of tea, and see they get back to their rooms safely? There you go.

Reparations?

Intentional abandonment of equipment?

Thanks a bunch, mssrs. McGovern and Polk, this will really help the Dems before the election.

worse than DOA, this will be used against us.

The better plan so far is of Joe Biden's plan. However, the Dems are not united to push it. If they do, it will provide a good alternate to 'Stay the course" of Republican strtegy and the voters will have clear picture of what Dems will do if they vote for them.

what about peter galbraith's plan: redeploy to kurdistan, let iraq break up. radical, dangerous, yes, but it's better than Stay the Corpse.
