Where was Buckley and the rest of the conservatives 4 years ago when their protestations might have done some good?

My Lady Mary,
Perhaps we are simply staring at the hindquarters of the beast. Not all Republicans are vile, pig-headed, barbarian thumb-suckers. And not all Dem's are benevolant saints incapable of Abramoffs. I have never known you to use the f*&*(&^ word, so I can only conclude that the world is truly swirling 'round 2000 Flushes.
Posted by tempus at September 17, 2006 02:25 AMThe first rule in Plumbing School is to have the plumber step up to the situation, give it the eye, and declare "This is all f*cked up!"
Likewise, the Democratic President will have to be very clear, at the inaguration, just what a mess we got.
Seriously. Or else it will be seen as ours within months.
After reading about voting problems looming at the polls in November, what's on my mind is how we are ever going to get rid of these fascists?
Posted by Rider at September 17, 2006 02:46 AMWASHINGTON (AP) - European diplomats are considering a meeting with Iran on the sidelines of next week's U.N. General Assembly in hopes of de-escalating the standoff over Tehran's nuclear program - but the United States won't be getting an invitation.
The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the volatile nature of the discussions, said the Bush administration is not expecting that such a meeting would be a major turning point in the dispute. The Bush administration has little confidence that "Iran will come through to meet the conditions" of verifiably suspending its enrichment work, the official said.
At a news conference Friday, Bush said he will send a signal at the United Nations that the United States will not tolerate delay tactics by Tehran. "Stalling shouldn't be allowed," Bush said.
Once again, Bush is saying I do not give a damn what the UN does or doesn't do, I have an agenda and I'm going to get my way. One would think that he would welcome negotiations and all the help he can get to solve the Iranian issue, but no, Bush has his mind made up. Has it ever crossed his mind that this is not just exclusively his f*cking problem? Did I miss the Inauguration of Bush as King of the World?

senor_crews, well knowing the attention span and memory recall of most Americans, you are quite right. It is even more important because the GOP will try to hang their failures around our necks. Even if a Democrat wins the WH (which I don't think will happen because the game is fixed) the GOP will continue their reign of destroying instead of building.
I am very curious if the MSM would give a Democratic President the same amount of T.V. time that they have given Bush and the GOP? Would the MSM continue their bias? Would a Democratic president get the same breaks by the MSM that they have given Bush? Somehow I don't think so. Remember, this is the same media that turned Clinton's stupid sexual escapades into a National distraction for the latter part of his Presidency. It's discouraging to have to fight the opposition Party and the MSM at the same time.
Posted by Judith at September 17, 2006 04:07 AMIt occurs to me that the real party of reform might actually srping from the Republicans if the Bush Wrecking Crew persists. What are the changes the previously faint-hearted Republicans will form a 3rd Party and do what the Dems never-quite-manage to do: alienate their base or their fringe sufficiently to get that famous critical mass of independents to DO something substantial?
Posted by gtash at September 17, 2006 04:34 AMI apologize for misspellings. I have no excuse.

i've been lurking, too much going on right now to craft comments. as always i read and link-jump all the informative posts, thanks ! things are working out ok but the plight of the working poor feels like i would have imagined life in russia in the 80's. this government is not responding to the real needs of anyone but corporate elite, complete corruption ! i'll be no the front porch cleaning my shotgun .... oops i don't have a porch anymore.
thanks j. and all

Mark, (laughing) I do keep strange hours don't I.
Did anyone know that today is 'Constitution Day?' I didn't. On September 17, 1787, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day, to sign the Constitution of the United States of America.
I apologize for misspellings. I have no excuse.
I do. I'm so high, I invited the Republican candidate in for a spliff.
Posted by tempus at September 17, 2006 06:28 AMtempus, you are correct, I don't use the f-word usually - although today it was a direct quote from Christopher Buckley straight from the Washington Monthly (and although it is a liberal magazine, I've always thought it was suitable for the family).
Otherwise, my excuse is that these are times that try men's souls (as first stated by Tom Paine) - thus the language.
Posted by Mary at September 17, 2006 07:16 AMMary, I will immediately go to my pastor and see if this can be overlooked. I brought $200, so it probably will be. Praise be to Buddah! Oops, wrong deity.
Posted by tempus at September 17, 2006 07:51 AMDammit anyway. Where's the guy from the movie, V (for Vendetta) when you need him.
Where are you V?
We have a long list to start on.
Posted by Alex at September 17, 2006 07:59 AMAlex, the point of the film is that we are V. But we haven't yet lost our fear. It's gonna be a while before we put on the mask and storm the White House, I think.
Posted by iamcoyote at September 17, 2006 08:16 AMIamcoyote, if it's in the hands of the people, then it's too late. Too much blogging, too much complaining, too much something something.
The people not caring about the state of affairs is what caused this mess. And while the media controls the message for the most part, the public will continue to be willfully ignorant.
We need a self-appointed V or a Huey Long or someone who's not associated with Reps or Dems. That's what's missing today. A leader for the people to get behind. Y'know, someone who puts the interest of the country above personal interest. In other words, a patriot, who will otherwise be viewed as a traitor by those in power.
Because if we wait on the two parties for the answer, then it won't happen in this lifetime.
Posted by Alex at September 17, 2006 09:15 AMYou have just got to love these criminals. Did anyone else here George Allen say today on MTP (or was it Fox) that he just made up the word "macaca" off the top of his head? God, they really do believe those of us who watch the political shows are dumb asses.
Posted by Judith at September 17, 2006 11:38 AMGotta hand it to the Reps.
They did what the English in the American Revolution and the Nazis in WW2 couldn't.
They convinced the American public to give it up peacefully.
Who knew the US should have been fighting the Reps in WW2.
Posted by Alex at September 17, 2006 12:44 PMWhen I think of the Bush administration and their neo-con backers, two descriptions come to mind: corporate and "hostile takeover."
Bush and Cheney are the CEO president and CEO vice-president who are attempting a "hostile takeover" of our democracy, from top to bottom.
The U.S. Congress is this neo-con Republican corporation's Board of Directors, as currently controlled by Republicans, and as long as the Board of Directors continues to turn a blind eye to this "hostile takeover" of our democracy by the Busheviks, then our democracy is in danger. Just look at Iraq.
The BushCorp in the White House launched a "hostile takeover" of another corporation, Iraq, going after CEO president of the other corporation, Saddam Hussein. And, of course, as they say, the rest is story. The BushCorp "hostile takeover" didn't exactly work out the way they had planned on it working. But hey, it's no sweat off their Dick in the White House. U.S. taxpayers are paying for this "hostile takeover" misadventure.
But back to America. The things that stand in the way of the neo-con Republican "hostile takeover" of America are: 1) the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, 2) the other branches of the federal government, 3) the news media and 4) governors of our states being in charge of their state's national guard.
So, to accomplish the "hostile takeover" of our freedom-loving democracy, the neo-con Republicans have launched attacks on all these things that potentially stand in their way of establishing a totalitarian, authoritarian, right-wing police state, in which the few rule over the many, thus making us into a banana republic.
The federal judiciary is attacked. In fact, just as the neo-con Republicans, and their "hostile takeover" attorneys, have reinterpreted those "oh so vague" Geneva Conventions to redefine what "torture" is or isn't, these same "hostile takeover" attorneys are attacking our Constitution and our Bill of Rights...looking for loopholes and special ways to twist the meaning of things. And now they are trying to get their Republican-lapdog Congress to even pass legislation saying that the federal judiciary can no longer rule on the constitutionality of whatever the "hostile takeover" White House plans for our democracy.
As far as the news media, we already know that they have been coopted. This is why I turned to the Internet more and more over the past several years. The Internet is my own personal News Wire Service. I can no longer trust our nation's news organizations, and their editors, to look at their Wire Service stories and select that which will keep me informed about what the "hostile takeover" neo-con Republicans are scheming this week.
As far as the "hostile takeover" corporate White House trying to seize control of the national guard from our nation's governors so BushCorp can sew up our democracy, I cannot help but think of that $385 million award given Halliburton to build "detention centers" around our freedom-loving country, for immigration and "other purposes."
We know how BushCorp's "hostile takeover" of Iraq has been going, from the CPA to today, which gives us some clue about how their "hostile takeover" of our freedom-loving democracy will play out.
I did not realize that such evil really existed until I saw the Bush administration in action.
