my analysis says that the lunatic is going to do the hiroshima, nagasaki thing. but on a greater scale. tehran and all the great centers of persia are intended to be obliterated.
$100/barrel oil? lucky if you will be able to even find the black gold.
if the lunatics energize the nuclear strike, then the iranian hydrocarbons are off the market forever. irradiated, they will be traceable and lethal to the consumers of those hydrocarbons.
the wild cards here are russia and china. i wonder when they will need to announce their alliance with iran. and reveal their icbm's and their intentions to launch strikes on the usa if the usa invades iran.
will the jcs finally assemble some cojones and remember their oath to the preservation of the constitution? and arrest george, dick, and the donald?

Shock and awe.
They will discover some horrible development that just can't wait. It will happen BEFORE the election.
Bush will hold a national televised news conference telling Iran, "This is your last chance, or else." Many Democrats will accuse him of doing this because of the horrible poll numbers, but sell-out Democrats and "responsible" pundits -- people like good ol' Joe Klein -- will rush to Bush's defense, saying this is no time to play politics with the world's safety.
The Iranians will probably reply with massive demonstrations which will make the evening news, and there may well be large protests and increased insurgency activity in Iraq as well. All of this will play right into the GOP's hands, making it look like the world is at war, and we need the strong, sure hand of the codpiece-in-chief.
They need to change this from a referendum on Bush to a CHOICE election, and this is their plan. Sheezuz. We have seen this coming for a year, haven't we?
It's not like we couldn't see the 2004 election strategy in advance just as easily. Rove announced in 2003 that gay marriage was going to be the issue of 2004. And he started up the Swift Boats group in early 2004, shortly after Kerry's early primary victories, so we had plenty of warning that he was going to play that to the hilt.
At some point you have to recognize the difference between paranoia and a reasonable respect (not admiration) for the skills of the very clever and unethical people who lay their plans well in advance and execute them mercilessly. Again and again, we are tempted to see these things in isolation or to think that they will just skip an idea the first time it doesn't work and go on to the next one. They don't work that way. You have to grasp that.
They aren't supermen or geniuses. They can make mistakes of political strategy, and this might be one. It's up to us to look one chess-move further ahead than we usually do.

Posted by Joseph at September 19, 2006 05:27 AMI saw an interesting article on Iraq today, about how the various factions are now argueing on how to partition the country, as "permitted in their bla, bla, bla". Somehow that slipped under the radar screen......partition the country with our blessing? I guess I didn't realize that was a key to Bush's plan to bring democracy to Iraq, i.e., break it into several Theocratic fiefdoms? Not a bad plan really, but I guess I just never heard George W. explain it before. Have you?

I blogged today about the TIME Inc. piece that addresses the U.S. military being told to prepare for a naval blockade of Iran by Oct. 1st.
The winds of another war appear to be blowing and this time the U.S. is going to engage a country much larger than Iraq, with more people and a far more sophisticated military machine at its disposal.
If I were an Israeli citizen, I would be get ready to leave ASAP, because after October 1st, there may not be a country to come home to.

Since we don't have the troops for an invasion, that's what's left. We know the administration wants it.
"Yeah," you may say, "but everybody knows that Iran would then jump off the sidelines and help crush us in Iraq. Taking on Iran right now would be crazy. The administration knows this."
Yeah. Sure. They also knew that we needed more troops to invade Iraq.

Although it eliminates the most dedicated democrat voters – the dead, the unregistered, felons, smokes-for-votes, phantoms, etc. – it does address voter intimidation. Remember all those newscasts in 2000 and 2004 of republicans using fire hoses and police dogs to keep voters away from the polls?
Michigan eliminated 55,000 dead voters from Detroit’s rolls and it appears the republican Sec of State and Attorney General will be watching to see if 97% of eligible voters show up this year. St. Louis is famous for their zeal towards civic duty, with 150% turnout in elections.

In this federal lawsuit the Justice Department noted that some Missouri election jurisdictions had more than 150% of their voting age population registered to vote.”
Judith, when voter fraud is eliminated, the democrat party will cease to exist.
Dubya and the posse will be attacking Iran before the election, not after. That's the significance of the request for a rushed sailing date of October 1st. That date corresponds with an absolute need for those minesweepers and minehunters to be on station off the Strait of Hormuz before November 7th. The only scenario demanding such a time frame for these particular ships is a need to sweep the Strait after Iran retaliates for an attack upon its national assets by their mining the strait. The US Navy needs to keep the Strait open for resupply to the troops in Iraq and for shipping petroleum out of the Gulf to keep the global economy afloat.
BTW, the transit time for those minesweepers and minehunters to the Strait is about three weeks. The next new moon, when the US Air Force and US Navy would prefer to conduct night bombing operations using their stealth technology, occurs on October 22nd. That's sixteen days before the election.
Flight operations under limited night visibility conditions would be considered possible through about October 25th. Maximum political benefit needs a potential response window of no more than about ten days. An attack beyond that time frame allows the Iranians to respond in some fashion, showing just how problematic this war policy with Teheran truly is. Basically, the political planning needs to have the air attack occur no earlier than October 28th. Who knows just how much risk this White House is willing to place our pilots at risk to proceed under less than optimal conditions? Yet, they do gain maximum political advantage in the November 7th election as they smear the Democrats who dare point out how bankrupt the Republican's and Dubya's foreign policy has become.
This isn't about the US Navy blockading Iran. This is about Iran blockading the US forces in Iraq and potentially the world economy in response to their perceived abandonment to illegal rough treatment by the US.

DETROIT'S FLAWED REGISTRY: Many
erroneous names found on city's voter
rolls
November 3, 2005
BY KATHLEEN GRAY, JOHN BEBOW and BEN SCHMITT
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS
On the verge of one of the most hotly contested elections in recent years,
Detroit's voter rolls are riddled with problems -- filled with the names of voters
who are dead, duplicates or people who no longer live in the city.
The flawed registry is of concern, election experts say, because it could invite
voter fraud. Detroit's city clerk routinely has sent applications for absentee
ballots to thousands of people on the voter list for each election -- even to
homes of people who have been dead for years, the Free Press found.
As many as 299,000 names on the city's 2004 list of 644,351 registered
voters may fall into those categories, Mark Grebner, one of the state's
foremost authorities on voter patterns, said Wednesday. Other consultants
and state officials agree that Detroit's voter lists carry lots of names that
should be purged, though they may quibble with the number.
west, you are a proven liar, why do you keep posting here?
Posted by goose1 at September 19, 2006 09:24 AMgoose1, because people keep responding to his lies. Sigh. Here we go again.
Posted by iamcoyote at September 19, 2006 09:25 AMMy understanding of the ruling in this case is that the court declared that it amounted to an illegal poll tax since a citizen could not aquire the required State ID without paying for it.
Is this incorrect?
I have no problem with purging the voter rolls. I know for a fact that they are populated by people no longer eligible to vote. My mother tells me every year that my name is still on the books in the town where I grew up even though I have not lived or voted there in over a decade. Where I live now if you do not vote in two consecutive elections your name is removed from the rolls and you must reprove residency in order to vote again.
If a state wants to create a requirement for state ID in order to vote let them institute a statewide program to purge the voter rolls of known deceased or ineligable people and create a program to proactively distribute valid ID to everyone in the state.
Posted by snark at September 19, 2006 09:43 AMSnark,
In Missouri, they found that 96% of the eligible voters already had picture I.D.
For those without it, the state is required to provide it free. Along with that, they instituted mobile units that go into neighborhoods, to nursing homes and anywhere else they need to provide the I.D.’s to anyone who needs one.
.....the Bush exit strategy for Iraq IS the war on Iran! We start the Iran War and two minutes later start the already planned Iraq mass pull out. Bush will, of course, blame Iran for the need to remove our forces.

If Bush decides to attack Iran, his efforts will create a cataclysmic failure because an attack against Iran is a gross violation of the principles of billiards and ballistics. The US simply does not have the capacity to take and occupy Persia on a permanent basis. I wrote about the theories in August.
Iran has the ability to inflict severe damage upon the United States and will do so if attacked.
If Bush attacks Iran, the following events will be likely.
Several aircraft carriers and other capital ships will be sunk with tens of thousands of casualties. Some of the ships will be sunk outside of the immediate theater of the Iranian war.
Iran will take permanent control of the Persian Gulf and drive out the US Navy from the theater.
Saudi Arabia will have a civil war.
Iran will "borrow" or "lease" a nuclear bomb from a sympathetic friend and publicize its possession within days of the initiation of the attack. A nuclear bomb will be detonated within the continental Unites States without any evidence as to the petpetrator.
American Civil Liberties will be greatly diminished.
The Republicans will keep control of the House and Senate in 2006. No Presidential or Congressional election will be completed in 2008.
The war will be a failure, but will enable Bush to remain in power for a long time.
Over time, the American experiment with democracy and personal liberty will recover.
Good God!
More talk of men diddling with sticks and balls!

Yes. But, they're going to fuck up this one too. Their whole plan violates B&B rules.
You see, to make the moat work to stabilize Baghdad, you have to expel all the civilians first and kill anyone remaining. Only then will Baghdad be under control. In the alternative, they could build the moat and force all the Iraqis outside of the moat to the inside. Then all of Iraq would be peaceful except Baghdad.
All they accomplish under the plan of putting a moat around Baghdad while leaving the people inside it to enrich Halliburton for building the moat and increase the prices of goods on the black market for the benefit of the sheiks and to the detriment of the ordinary people. Of course if war profiteering and making corruption more rampant is the goal, then the current plan of building a moat around Baghdad is a great plan.
Whatever?
Posted by Sherman's Ghost at September 19, 2006 01:04 PMFormer Virginia Gov. Mark Warner said in Iowa on Monday that Democrats have taken the wrong approach in arguing against tax cuts enacted under President Bush, singling out former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign as a reason the message did not resonate in 2004.In order to appeal to more voters, the party ought to avoid alienating wealthier Americans, Warner told members of the Greater Des Moines Partnership in Des Moines at the outset of a day of meetings in the lead-off caucus state.
