Who said he cares?

He and the other elected officials get pensions and full benefits after they leave office.

All the friends and business associates have gotten theirs.

The Top 1% have gotten theirs.

Well like they say, a liberal is a conservative who got a foreclosure notice.

A couple of new Subway franchises have opened in my neighborhood. Huge potential in sandwich construction.

Our economy is propped up by wild government spending of "the people's money," not only the money of the people living today but the money of Americans yet unborn.

The people's money is all tied up in the Federal deficit and the Federal debt. That borrowed money is spread all over the world but check out the incomes in the Washington, DC, suburbs. Fairfax County, VA has the highest median household income in the US @ $98,000 (2005).

Do they do FICO scores for governments?

Homebuilders!

Come to New Orleans! Lots of construction work. Really, if any homebuilder is hurting, there is more than enough work rebuilding from the hurricane. I'm looking for someone to build me a 2300 ft^2 home - after I get the settlement from all the government agencies.

Plutocrats have no interest in creating jobs, they are only interested in creating profits. American jobs are simply an optional (not necessary) step in the profit "process".

If we wanted to place a priority on creating jobs, we would have to understand that "the economy" is our servant, not the other way around. We must stop regarding "the economy" as some all-powerful divinity whose operations can't be challenged by mere humans.

We would impose enormous taxes on the gross revenues (not just "profits") of companies that opted not to increase their work force in America, and tried to increase their bottom line by outsourcing to countries with third world wages and without stringent environmental protection regulations.

And we would lower taxes on companies that increased their employment in America and provided traditional benefits to workers.

Unregulated capitalism, while delivering enormous corporate profits, is weakening the actual foundation of the American economy and impoverishing more and more "workers".

Thus, this system of unregulated capitalism must end, if "the economy" is not to control us.

Real estate has been a great absorber of young white collar folks in occupations where it's difficult to move up, as well as those with not-so-marketable degrees. My realtor here was an ex-journalist. The guy who did my last re-fi was a liberal arts major with other few prospects. A relative's house was sold by someone who'd been a music history major. Teachers have been using real estate licenses to get out of unhappy school situations for decades. Home improvement is full of misfits; in the past, I've hired ex-rock musicians, various kinds of in-recovery (mostly) long-term substance abusers, bike messengers, and people who, generally speaking, couldn't work for someone else in a normal job.

Even if other sectors looked rosy, it would be difficult for many people connected with real estate/home building/renovation to get jobs. OTOH, those of us who need handymen and small remodleing jobs done will finally find ourselves in a buyers market.

Slaves built America and got no thanks for doing so. What's going on here is nothing new. Government by rich white men isn't going to change what's been going on for years. Corps just travel farther for cheap labor (or hire illegal labor), in the process demoralizing local legal labor, which will then become cheap also. Once people figure out that their paycheck aint gonna cover their credit card bill, I don't know who'll be buying any merchandise, or houses, or gas....

And I'm not getting down on illegal labor, just the exploiting gumment policies and corps. I feel nothing but sympathy for "illegals"...

That was me, and I meant "illegal labor" to mean the people, not as a verb.

This economy reminds me of the dust bowl days. Labor Day weekend I was stuck in traffic on the Interstate with thousands of my fellow Americans whose SUV's were hauling and towing all their earthly possessions, or at least their motorboats and All Terrain Vehicles. They appeared to be fleeing their repossessed homes and looking for refuge at the nearest Water Park.
