While I still see a potential landslide, I have no doubt that this ruling gives about 5 house seats back to the thuglicans. I'm just hoping that a certian senate seat doesn't go along with it.
Posted by herbal tee at October 27, 2006 03:17 AMI think you're right. Rove has very few arrows in his intellectual quiver. I think we've seen this election cycle, he just keeps doing the same damn thing, over and over again.
Unfortunately, because the Republican party has built an impressive election apparatus, it usually works. Especially when they get to, privately, count the votes. This time, though, there is a significant opportuniy for us to undermine the tactic. I believe the fundie base is reeling a litle bit from all the scandals swilrling around the "leadership" of the party. The enormity of the "Log Cabin" contingent in the top Republican staff that has recently been exposed by Foleygate is definitely making some of them uneasy. If they want to pound the drums of alarm over the New Jersey decision, we need to hit them hard about the hypocrisy of all the "glass closet" Republicans warning them of the danger of a gay takeover. And we should start with Ken Mehlman and Hastert's entire top staff, with a few questions about fat old Denny shacking up with both of them for years, while in Washington. Gloves OFF!
I have no interest in "outing" anyone because of their private predillections, but I'll be damned if I sit around with mouth agape in amazement at their chutzpah, while a scurrilous gang of treasonous thugs attack "themselves" as a menace to society. The mouth breathing true believers will swallow the kool aid once again and they WILL get some more of them to the polls, like good the good little vote-bots they are.
Unfortunately, we certainly can't depend on the Democratic "Leadership" in DC, the ones who CAN command the megaphone, if they wanted to. No doubt the Grima, Grima & Grima "Democrat" Consulting Group will counsel them to "stay above the fray". NEVER attack a Republican where he's weak! The corporate, wholly owned media will tread carefully (suppress) due to consideration of "privacy" rights (of Republicans). The obvious hypocrisy will be noted only by Olberman, maybe Krugman and a couple of other lonely voices. Those sources, of course, have been demonized to believers so thoroughly that they will never be heard by the Republican masses.
What can WE, the netroots, do to counter this?
Posted by DeminNewJ at October 27, 2006 03:19 AMI wondered about this last nigh driving home from work. while the NJ Supreme Court obviously isn't siding with the arguments for 'traditional, moral marriage', the timing couldn't have been worse.
That is unless this latest ruling actually demoralized the Christian Base and has them give up because of GOP ineffectuality in stopping these rulings. Which I doubt - the holier-than-thou bigots seem to be immune to demoralization from justice.

The blame the gays schtick is tiresome and has an underlying homophobic theme I take great exception to.
Frankly Steve, I'm disappointed you would play this card.
Posted by Christopher at October 27, 2006 05:13 AMthe holier-than-thou bigots seem to be immune to demoralization
Why should they, idio? They've been blessed with all the morals!
Christopher, I don't know if homophobic is the right word. It's more like reducing people's lives to a political talking point. Bush drew first blood yesterday, by veering to the sanctity of marriage in his speechifying where he'd been silent for a couple years about it.
But you're right about the talking point depending on homophobia on the one side to sway votes. Also, I've seen many lefties seem resentful that gays are "bringing all that up again." Even John at Americablog, only a few weeks ago, was complaining about a gay rights group trumpeting a gay marriage media blitz just before an election.
I agree Steve. The news was good for the country as a whole, we became a step closer to civility. However, the gop has it in their head we need to take several steps backward. The election will not be what we had thought. It would be nice to say I am wrong though.

Posted by Christopher at October 27, 2006 06:34 AM Dear Steve: There comes a point where to maintain sanity, one has to look at reality beyond whether or not it's good for the Democrats.
If enough people are more interested in meddling in someone else's private business rather than a lost war that my side loses an election, so be it. Their minds are never going to change. Let 'em reap the whirlwind.
The laws of the state of New Jersey mandated this decision. Polling indicates a majority of New Jerseyans agree with it. The benighted bigots out there in Witness Protection Program Land go suck lemons.
Equal rights under law is like opposing torture. If that's the losing side, I don't want to win.
The D is for deviance party
Apparently, Benshito never learned his alphabet because Mark Foley -- the pan ultimate Congressional child predator is a cardcarrying REPUBLICAN and his team of enablers, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Rep. Tom Reynolds and Rep. John Boehner are all REPUBLICANS.
Next?
Posted by Christopher at October 27, 2006 06:39 AMWhile everything Steve says may be true I think the progress toward the equal application of the law to all people in this country is too important to be subjugated to our electoral concerns. The same arguments are made every year. Why now? Why this year? Why right before the election? If the gays just wait a little longer! Blah blah blah....
When is there ever going to be a good time?
This ruling makes perfect legal sense. There is no compelling reason for the state to favor heterosexual couples over homosexual couples in the way that it distributes state sanctioned benefits. None. The 'it's for the children' canard it bullshit. There is no requirement for heterosexual couples to procreate in order to receive the benefits emparted by the state to married couples. None.
Those opposed to this application of legal equality object for one reason and one reason alone. Hatred. George Bush hates the idea of equality for gays and lesbians. All his bluster about protecting the sanctity of marriage is so much tripe. How does the extension of the rights and benefits of marriage to same sex couples in anyway endanger the institution of marriage for heterosexual couples? It does not.
Those who wring their hands over the effects of this issue on the election need to get over it. Push this issue everyday the rest of the year. Work for equality for all citizens all year. Then you won't have to cry about how the 'uppity' gays are costing the Democrats elections. Just because they want to be treated equally before the law.
Posted by snark at October 27, 2006 06:48 AMLike the pig moving through the belly of the snake, I think it will become increasingly apparent that the culture is becoming more tolerant of gays/lesbians. Today's young non-voters will eventually become voters, and they are much less intolerant than their elders. It's just a matter of time. We are witnessing the death rattle of the conservative culture warriors.
Posted by matthew at October 27, 2006 06:50 AMThe 3 top issues are Iraq, the economy and taxes.
The republicans are making the economy and taxes top issues because those look good for them. They can say the dems will raise taxes and hurt the economy. The economy and taxes should not be top issues. Top issues should be Iraq, minimum wage, healthcare, and social security. They should be talking about how Bush is still going to push privatizing SS.
As for gay marriage, a majority of people in this country (I believe it's a majority now) are for civil unions giving rights to gay couples. The NJ court did not mandate gay marriage. They said there must be equal rights and told the legislature to make it happen however they wanted. Unfortunately, the people who are against gay marriage are willing to vote on that issue alone, while those for gay marriage will vote based on other issues and won't be driven to the polls simply to protect equal rights. As for the Virginia law, it's so restrictive, that even a lot of people who don't want gay marriage are not sure about voting for this law.

Frankly Steve, I'm disappointed you would play this card.
I really didn't get this from Steve's brief post, Christopher. Rather, I view it as the reality of what the GOP will try to do with the ruling. They are the ones to be held accountable for the pandering of the ruling to their whack-job fundies. I don't see where Steve is blaming gays for anything. I too think it's rational to assume the republi-cons will try to use this as a wedge issue, but I don't think it's going to work this time around. Unfortunately, they will never be held accountable, even if dems take the house and senate. A vocal minority in the party will prevent the majority in the party from holding these fascists accountable.

There's only one problem with all this: "If they couldn't even keep 16 year old boys safe from Mark Foley, how can we trust them to really stand for moral values?"
Everytime they want to raise issues like this Democrats should just say "what about Foley? Your party didn't do squat about him! They just covered it up."

Posted by iamcoyote at October 27, 2006 12:14 PMHey, what's not to like about the Bible, after all it was written for the explicit purpose of allowing the Roman Empire, which until then had persecuted Christians, to "convert" to "Christianity" and use it as an excuse to start persecuting foreigners of other faiths and taking them as slaves. Not that the Romans didn't still enjoy their man-boy love in the privacy of the Roman baths, of course, as the Republicans still do.
Obviously today's religious right would like to use it for the exact same purpose in creating their Rovian, oh excuse me, Bushian Empire.

See our friend here has a way of dealing with all of what you said. It's quite simple. All of modern organized religion has perverted, because of man's inate depravity, the true nature of what the Bible teaches. It is only scout and his ilk who God has exposed the truth to. They are amongst the select whom God has chosen to save. Get it. Everything that exists that you know today is perversion of the truth. It's only correct in scouts head. Hah! Gotcha there. I'm not uppity at all.
Aids is all about bizarre and ruthless sex acts between homosexuals, combined with illicit drug use.
Condoms! Condom use can be quite playful and exciting. I'll wax poetic about it...later. On to the drug use!
HIV/AIDS is decimating the heterosexual populations in Africa. It's growing quickest in heterosexual populations over the age of 65 in America. Viagra seems to be taking it's unintentional toll. We may need to sit and have a chat with granny about condom use to keep her safe.
AIDS is not a gay plague. That thinking is so 80's, like Culture Club. If it is the gay plague, then lesbians are God's chosen people since they have the lowest incidence of AIDS in the population. Maybe we need to get lesbians back to the Isle of Lesbos, arm them to the teeth, and allow them to subjugate indigenous populations in hopes that they can somehow get us to the second coming? Lesbians and Jews. Gods chosen few.
BTW: Where can I find some of that bizarre and ruthless stuff? It's purely an academic interest. I'm thinking of writing a paper.

snark, going off the deep end?
I can certainly understand how you might perceive that from your vantage point in the deep deep water.
Her entire personality is based upon vanity, deception and hatred.
He notes without a hint of irony.

Bite me, non-Prophet, ya blasphemous loser. We know you're here because you just love thinking about the gay sex and hate yourself for it. Too bad we all are having to read your girly-girl whining as you yank your li'l prophet home.

Hey fuckwad, I write at that site!! What a dumbshit!
So once again, I'll repeat, your christian "morality" is nothing more than fanaticism!
Your views do not offer hope, love, friendship or tolerance! Only hatred of others who disagree with you!
i believe the medieval church described pride as the worst of the seven deadlies (any of you guys living in the 12th century wanna back me up on that?) so all your prayer, devotion, adherence to The Word, self-sacrifice means nothing if you're a dick about it.
anyway, humility (counterpoint to pride) seems to be missing from a great many "saved" folks, present company included (not you, judith). i guess i could use more humility as well. but i'm not proud of it.
benjoya, Judith walks the walk. One of very few true Christians in the world today. I may not believe in gods, but if you purport such things are truth, shouldn't you actually live them? scout's no christian, he doesn't even know the Bible. Even I know Lucifer isn't the antichrist. scout's book was spewed up by his dog, and he thinks it's from the mouth of god. And he gives all true christians an even worse name than the Robertsons and Dobsons of the world.
But it sure is funny to watch him make shit up and call it truth!

And no acceptance of the fact that your arrogance is what makes you such a dick, and why you're universally hated on this blog!
But thanks for the fun. There you go, Steve, we kept the loon down here, so you all could discuss important things on the threads above! No need to thank us.

You're obviously an expert and speak from personal experience.
As a gay man (always have been), I don't have a clue what you're talking about, so I guess I'm at risk for being forced to turn in my credentials.
Tsk, tsk.

Posted by iamcoyote at October 27, 2006 05:31 PMAids in Africa is not aids, but simply the poverty stuff.
Hmmm. First I've ever heard of the symptoms of poverty being ameliorated by AIDS treatment, unless you conjecture that poverty is related to AIDS in Africa, and it most certainly is. It's also related to extreme ignorance and superstition, and distrust of what they are told about AIDS. They think AIDS was introduced by foreign governments in disease prevention programs and so refuse to innoculate their children. Now, we see Polio starting to rear it's ugly head on the Continent once again.

As a gay man (always have been), I don't have a clue what you're talking about,
Well, Christopher, as a Broke Back Mountian Hollywood leftcoast liberal faggot, I know what he is talking about and I'm very surprised you haven't heard of it. It's a simple combination of over the counter drugs and a legal herb that gives a man an erection 1/3 bigger in length and girth, and strong enough to support a table lamp. The erection can safely last up to six hours, and the potential is for at least 6 - 12 orgasms, some lasting upwards of 6 minutes. Seems to work for lesbians in the orgasm department, only they are very very multiple and very very strong. I heard from very good sources that the G-spot becomes the size of a paper plate. Anyone can hit it.
Go to the pharmacy at any Wal-Mart. You'll need Calcium tablets and Vitamin C. Then find the herbal tablets and look just to the right of Ecina...wait a second...someone is at the door...damn, it's the Jehovah's Witnesses. I've got to talk to them about the last edition of the Watchtower. Be right back.
Posted by phidipides at October 27, 2006 05:38 PMI bow to your genius, p-dippy. That was a stunner! And thanks for the tip. I can stop by the WalMart on my way to planned parenthood for the abortion I've been putting off! Time to clean house, you could say.
your christian "morality" is nothing more than fanaticism!
SOS, there's nothing christian about non-prophet here. No one who says this:
Christ hates all of man, but decided to set aside a group for Himself. This latter is not explained in the Bible.
can possibly be described as a christian, fanatic or not. A little gay, maybe - "set aside a group of men for Himself?" As Rob Cordrey used to say, "Come ON!" He's more a cultist using bits of existing religions to form a personal belief system. But christian? Nah. Nutcase? Oh, sure.
Posted by iamcoyote at October 27, 2006 05:46 PMYes, it's truly stunning when the real freak inside scout is drawn out. Scary scary shit that.
Scout's so far off the deep end his head is liable to implode from the pressure.
That's good stuff. And that whole bit about AIDS in Africa. What kinda shit is swimming around inside that head? Like I said, it's a convenient world view when 'the truth' has been revealed to you and only you.
I don't hate scout coyote. I wish I knew who he is so I could arrange to get him some help. If he's confined in some kind of institution I suppose that's for the best although they don't seem to be doing much for him. Tragic.
Posted by snark at October 27, 2006 06:55 PMI know that it's fun to play shoot down the freak, but remember your doing excatly what scout wants you to do. These trolls all have the same goal, to "waste" liberal bandwidth. Scout's just slightly more sophisticated, just because someone calls corporate lords evil doesn't mean their not really on the other side, and effective than bendito et.al.

I read pessimist all the time. I just don't comment, much.
But TIKI, that was the best!
Of course I'm drunk so who cares.
I was wondering if somehow pessimist wasn't related to scout. That would explain his constant defense of him.
Posted by Seven of Six at October 27, 2006 08:32 PM
It's all in the timing.
What if one of Karl Rove's October Surprises was the pre-Nov. 7th New Jersey Supreme Court ruling that gay couples have as much equal status and protection as heterosexual couples under the New Jersey Constitution?
I'm just saying that the announcement of this NJ ruling before Nov. 7th has played very well into Karl Rove's anti-gay strategy of mobilizing the Republican's hardcore evangelical base to vote on Nov. 7th.
Why couldn't the NJ Supreme Court have waited until after Nov. 7th to hand down it's decision?
How many Republicans versus how many Democrats are on the New Jersey Supreme Court?
Anyway, I'm just highly suspicious of the timing of this announcement. It has played into Karl Rove's hands too well, in my view, to be just a coincidence.
Posted by The Oracle at October 28, 2006 12:48 AMI think Steve is too pessimistic. First, they didn't rule that gay marriage must necessarily be accepted, the ruling is just similar to what Vermont came up with. Second in NJ itself they're aren't a lot of evangelicals. People outside of NJ may not care a whole lot about what happens within NJ.
By election day, this will largely be forgotten.
