Yeah, you've gotta wonder about his political accumen. The first thought that went through my head when I heard he was going to announce was 'Why the fuck is this guy making people think about political campaigns two days after the end of the nastiest election period in recent memory?' I've got a bias against him now and it has nothing to do with his policy positions. Way to start off your candidacy.
Posted by snark at November 9, 2006 09:31 AMThe inevitable flood of presidential vetos will put the lie to Bush's bi-partisanship real quickly.
Posted by snark at November 9, 2006 09:33 AMBush hates lib'rul Americans, our federal government and our country's Constitution with a deep, abiding passion and he has since the day Scalia and the SC Conservative Team appointed him.
He and his media allies will attack the new Dem Congress and go back on the offensive as soon as they think they are able.
Team Conservative took some serious torpedo hits to the engine room Tuesday and is operating with quite a few less boilers, but it's still manueverable, Captain Madman is still at the helm, and there's a lot of firepower at his disposal.
Pass the legislation the country wants, make the corrupt Republicans vote on it and make Captain Madman veto it. Repeat. Repeat. And investigate.
Posted by euzoius at November 9, 2006 09:34 AMSpeaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid should direct the Chairs of the armed services, foreign relations and intelligence committees to investigate violations of the U. S. Code by government officials, other individuals and corporations in the conception, promotion and execution of the Iraq war.
Evidence of such violations should be referred to the House Judiciary Committee for impeachment or a Special Counsel appointed by the Attorney General for criminal prosecution or both. Those convicted of crimes should be reprimanded, discharged, fined, imprisoned or otherwise sanctioned to the full extent of the law. No pardons. No suspended sentences. No paroles. No mercy. No exceptions.
The Bush/Cheney administration and its associated national security elite should be held accountable for this disastrous criminal blunder. The blood of thousands of faithful American soldiers and innocent Iraqis is on their hands.
Turns out Karl Rove isn't a genius after all. He's not even very bright.
Posted by Christopher at November 9, 2006 10:09 AMTurning on a dime? is that what they call "flip floping" when other folks do it?
spot on, Soto. Politics over Policy. DiIulio told us that years ago and it has been the most glaring truism of this Administration. They have nothing, zero, to show for 6 years of governance that wasn't directly tied to politics over good policy for our citizens. Their sole accomplishment is political dirty tricks and election hijinks. Much has been made of his Texas years, but believe me there are plenty people down there that hated him and Rove. And still do. No, he'll continue to want to have his way on everything. His whole life has been to that end. It won't stop because Pelosi is a nice lunch partner. As long a Rove is by his side he'll continue to scheme against his adversaries and screw anyone who rebuts him. That is what George W. Bush is. The only question now that he's lost the most important game of his life is whether he'll just quit. That would be no surprise.
Posted by T2 at November 9, 2006 10:17 AMYou have it right on, Steve.
I will never, ever be able to erase the image of Bush talking about the sacrifice the young men and women who have lost their lives made in this totally unnecessary war of his - and all the while with a smirk on his face and a glint in his eyes - he knows no remorse and is an unfeeling, callous S of a B.
It's a mind boggling on how much lower the bar has been set for this war criminal. I wish that our troops in Iraq would be able to see his question and answer session with the press yesterday just to show how much he's been playing politics with the their lifes. Bottom line, our commander-in-chief's action shows he does NOT care about the troops.
Posted by anonymous at November 9, 2006 10:33 AMIf bush, cheney, and rove had any chickenhawk chutzpah they would reach across the aisle and invite all of the newly elected politicians to a "loyalty adjustment" event held in a large auditorium.
Saddam Hussein wrote the book on these opposition equalizers, and would be more than happy to organize and "execute" the event in return for a full pardon.
Posted by TIKI AL at November 9, 2006 10:36 AMIn reading about on the net--especially comments by readers--I observe a pretty even division of opinion on whether all sorts of Congressional investigations should be mounted or whether Congress should take it's mandate and concentrate on fixing what is broken fast. I realize it's rational not to try fixing something until you know precisely what went wrong. I also realize that there is an element of justice to be honored. But I seriously wonder if a sizable number of folks who voted against the Republican dominion really want to spend a lot of time and money conducting what will be perceived as "show trials". I admit to being an advocate for the impeachment route. I think there was criminal conduct and it should not be swept under the rug. But I do not think that is what people voted FOR when they voted for the Democrats. I think they voted first for putting on the brakes, and then conducting repairs, and then rolling back losses to law and liberty. Is there a way to do this which is fair, above-board and inclusive b ut without the aura of payback?
Posted by gtash at November 9, 2006 10:39 AMIs there a way to do this which is fair, above-board and inclusive b ut without the aura of payback?
Yup. Come out of the gate with Pelosi's "First 100 hours aganda". Get that ball rolling. Then push for follow through on all the investigting that the Republicans never got around to in the last Congress. I've been pretty strident in refusing to support the urge to push for impeachment hearings because it's gonna turn people off as you say. There are plenty of areas where the Dems can assert the Congressional perogative of oversight without makingpeople think they're on a witch hunt. Let the investigations lead where they may. If there's a case for impeachment the media will drive the story. Bush has a big target on his back now. The media loves that. If the Dems play it right.
Posted by snark at November 9, 2006 10:55 AMnow is the time for blood to be let. the only thing being planned by those in power right now is a grab for more, period. it is during these dark 100 or so that the worst will happen, and that the future will be decided. the shredding truck has all ready been to cheney's, you know they have one at the WH built in.

Posted by oldtree at November 9, 2006 10:57 AMIf Bush starts vetoing legislation like minimum wage increase and Medicare prescription drug fix, he can complete the job of making the Republican party a regional southern rather than a national party. Would be a fitting legacy for him.
Charles
I have to partially disagree with you on this Steve. I think the Rummy decission was made weeks ago. This was an intervention by the Bush crime family and marks an end to the Cheney administration. It was all about politics but it was decided that Cheney would be locked in his bunker some time ago.
Posted by Ron In Portland at November 9, 2006 11:04 AMI take your point gtash, but (for example) investigating defense contract awards and looking into profiteering by defense contractors, when the "Defense" Dept is asking for 150 billion more next year, isn't in any way payback, it's trying to see how the money was spent, and has historically been done by Congress during time of (actual) war.
Plus, Congress can quickly pass election reform legislation, ethical reforms, minimum wage and other overwhelmingly popular legislation, and ALSO conduct oversight and investigations. It's not either/or.
And I thought I saw that a majority of voters WANTED investigations of Bushco "operations" over the past years---so many may have been voting exactly for that.
Posted by euzoius at November 9, 2006 11:08 AMI decided to turn on the radio to ru$h, just to hear him whine.
He's blaming McCain for the downfall of election.
Then he lies and says something to the effect that I'm the only one who always cover for the conservatives.
Then he says he doesn't do interviews or have guests on his show. Weren't bu$h and cheney on his show last week before the election?
I started yelling obscenities at the freaking car radio! I wish I could have 'female dog' slapped that fucker!
I agree with euzoius. Democrats CAN walk and chew gum at the same time. One thing I'd like to add to Speaker Nancy's 100 hour list is comprehensive election reform.
While I'd love to be able to get the money out, that's a long struggle against entrenched incumbents. The power of investigations, used to expose much of the skull(& Bones)duggery in the electronic voting scam gives us an opportunity, before the bloom is off the rose. We must, at least mandate verifiable voter paper trails AND mandatory random audits, aka the Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2005. It already has around 230 co-sponsors. Let's pass that puppy fast and start draining the swamp before 2008 hits us in the behind.
Posted by DeminNewJ at November 9, 2006 11:48 AMDeminNewJ, When can we start our own re-districting?
Posted by Seven of Six at November 9, 2006 11:55 AMI agree wholeheartedly that Bush's removal of Rumsfeld was entirely political, but with the perpetual campaign in effect, every action of a president is, inherently, politically motivated.
I'm not defending him, just making an observation.
I also do think that it's a good choice, even if it's done for less than optimal reasons. Rumsfeld should have left long ago, but better late than never. I have reservations about his replacement, but I think I'll trust an evil I don't know over one that I do.
Now we can see whether or not the Democrats will really be able to accomplish what we all hope they can. I myself have little more faith in them than in the Republicans. The Duopoly is too interested in maintaining the basic status quo.
Daddy and Mommy reached the ends of their ropes. W turned on a dime because he was slapped upside the head by Daddy and Mommy. Karl has proven to be no genius--disastrously. Georgie's whines and recriminations aimed Karl are his craven attempt to stop Daddy and Mommy from beating on their little boy anymore: "Karl lied, he made me do it, it's his fault, I won't do it anymore."
Dad and the "pragmatists"--Baker, Gates--etc., are in charge. The neo-cons already jumped ship and and now W's bestest buddy Karl has been neutralized.
That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Now how does the Bolton renomination fit into that? And what does it say about Cheney's role from now one?
Posted by Merle at November 9, 2006 12:05 PMGreat post Steve. I think it ridiculous to think Bush would have let Rummy go if Repubs had held on. Victory in their eyes would have meant vindication.
I think its interesting to remember what John DiIulio
What you've got is everything, and I mean everything, being run by the political arm. It's the reign of the Mayberry Machiavellis.
And that included whether Rumsfeld would stay or go. There is no pivot with Jr and how humiliating is it to have Daddy come to your rescue when you're 60 years old?
Posted by Daryl at November 9, 2006 12:17 PMStill digesting what I am hearing and reading. One thing I believe Speaker Pelosi should include near the top of her 100 Hrs agenda is an effort to help the Gulf Coast back on its feet. Katrina is a kind of battle-cry but as recently as a week before the elections, bus loads of American news paper editors visited the area and were stunned at how little had changed since the flood and hurricane. Of course, it doesn't appear much in their newspapers---but that is really beside the point.
I heard "Talk of the Nation" today and three analysts there seemed to think that the rejection of Bush Republicanism is not a vote for liberal reform either. The Times (Brit paper/online) reports that the margin of victory on first blush was not due to turnout, new voters, energized base, but rather to turn-coat Republicans!
As much as I want to know about Cheney's pre-war confidential advisory meetings on energy (and I have always believed the whole war was about oil), I would rather see serious work done first on restoring habeas corpus, Katrina response, and getting a practical response to the Iraq situation developed. I'd like to see the seeds planted for sustainable energy and energy conservation, environmental sanity, and comprehensive health care. I don't know if that makes me "liberal" or not. I do not get excited by morality lectures on marriage and abortion, but does that make me anti-conservative?
So damn much is broken, it is hard to know where to start fixing it.
Posted by gtash at November 9, 2006 12:50 PMS. O'Six,
Redistricting is something that, oddly enough, since I don't like most incumbents, I would like to see done fairly and according to relatively objective and straightforward rules.
I've had enough of a permanent political class. Whether it's Joe Biden, who had to wait 6 weeks after he was elected before he was old enough to take office, (and hasn't been gainfully employed since) or the whole cadre of College Republicans who train in Deception, Vote Suppression and Graft 101, and expect to spend their lives profiting from politicking and lobbying, that's not the way our government is supposed to work!
The current Congress is responsive ONLY to the big checks and who can give them. If we redistrict them into greater security, we're the ones who get screwed. They won't even feel the need to use the jelly.
Posted by DeminNewJ at November 9, 2006 12:54 PMThey won't even feel the need to use the jelly.

Posted by Galloping Goose at November 9, 2006 01:36 PMEveryone STOP HATING AMERICA!!
All you liberal, left-wing, commie, pinko jerks! There is a real threat out there and all you want to do is be passive. all you want to think is "Oh, let's not anger anyone". Well enough of that, let's take the fight to them stronger and stronger!!! If there wasn't so much America hating by the idiot left, then we can go fight the war the way we know how to, rather than having to walk on egg shells all the time, because of people on the left.
By the way, when the polls said that going into Iraq was the right thing, most of the idiot left voted for it for political gain. So I think your dismay should be directed to your own party as well.
Bottom line is, there is a growing number of peopple out there that have been joinig the global Jihad vs. Western civilizations way before Bush was in office, and since then was 9/11. The difference is we now have someone willing to protect us and go on the offensive rather than waiting till we get hit again!
I love this country! This is where I enjoy freedom and make a living for my family, amongst many other bene's of being a citizen of the USA!
The Left does want us to lose this war and always blames America first for all the world's problems (or most), do you know why?? Because if there were signs of this war going well (which there are, but just not being reported by, who else, but the leftist media) then all of the approval ratings would be against their cut and run attitude and with Bush and the right. So they don't want that to happen because of a continued loss of power of their party.
It is a real shame, I just wonder how much of the public perception of this war is due to the constant media biased reporting, and undermining of the war effort by the leaders of the democratic party. There are millions being freed from a tyrannical dictatorship, and schools being opened, the land being cultivated by farmers, markets growing, etc. in Iraq. USA has always been a force for the greater good in all of our history.
In one's response to me, he said, that Americans were fed a bunch of BS about the war. I said, you watch too much CNN (Clinton News Network), do you realize the left and the right and many international countries concurred on the same intel. So the same BS that you claim the Americans were fed, were fed by the left too. I will paraphrase John Kerry - "If you don't think Saddam Hussein is a threat, then don't vote for me" So you must just plain hate eveyone, left and the right!!!
So should someone be held accountable, yes, but once there were many to collaborate on the ultimate decsion on going into Iraq, and once coalition forces are there fighting, then let's do what is right according to what is going on there and finish the job and then get out of there as soon as it is the right time. I mean it is war for crying out loud and a new budding gov't. We still have many problems after 230 years of a democracy, and the left wants this to be done in 5 yrs. come on!
Iran is currently, feeding Iraq's insurgency and is playing to the division currently in our country politically. They and radical muslims want to take over, plain and simple. If we were united as a country, nobody could stop the aid we are giving to parts of the world in an effort spread everyone's birth right to freedom. But all becasue of the left afraid to lose their power we have to, hopefully not, stop the great work that our troops are doing, and the hope for a better world.

Evidently Karl thought he could send Bush out to Red state areas and drum up enough Rah rah votes to keep the ship in the water. what they did not realize is that for the real people out here their political game is not a game. It is real money and real blood. The average Joe sees Air Force One landing in his hometown in a campaign( especially this one where Bush is not on any ballot) and wonders how much tax dollars this little dheerleading fest will cost him. The presidency on permannt campaign has made the average person much less in awe than bored with a president, especially a cheerleader like this one. It did not generate the extra votes.
Evidently just enough white men who vote and always vote Republican were honest enough to be disgusted and voted Dem this time. That is largely what helped us over the hump. No Karl is no genius and has no secret numbers that we do not have( as he bragged the other day).

Posted by Goyo at November 9, 2006 04:31 PMHow about the first Muslim and Socialist getting elected? Now we are talking true Americana!
Posted by Seven of Six at November 9, 2006 07:37 PMIt has occurred to me that, in DC politics, the idea is not to expose and prosecute unethical or illegal activity, but to use that knowledge as blackmail. Foley reportedly didn't want to run for another term. Someone from the RNC, decided that this cash cow needed to stay around and keep the milk flowing and somehow "convinced" him to run for re-election.
Cheney has a lot of questions to answer concerning his behavior and actions leading up to and during the 911 atrocity. (Scheduling multiple airforce war games on 911 effectivley disabling our air defences; also see: Minetta's 911 Commission testimony concerning Cheney's reprimand of a junior officer who asked if the order's still stood as the approaching plane drew steadily closer to the Pentagon...BTW what were those orders anyway?
If Cheney retires for "health reasons", you can bet he would have to be threatened with the exposure of some pretty nasty shit. I can't see him going willingly, but I would love to see him go. Being a skeptic of the official 911 narrative, it will be interesting to see if a whistle blower with evidence will come forward to a sympathetic congressional committee and shed some light on what really happened that day in 2001.
