On the question of whether America is better off with Dems in control of Congress, we probably peel off all eight or nine principled conservatives in America. The Madisonian design depends on different constituencies pursuing opposed programs. When the whole system is being run by people on the same page, we are forced to trust them to be good people—and, of course, the whole point was that we really can't have this trust in people with power. That would be true even if the people in question were not this bunch of jackals.
