Comments: Hoyer Wins It

I really have a hard time figuring out why Pelosi came out so hard for Murtha.

Unless she figured she'd get it out there that she's loyal to those who are loyal to her. But the negatives seem to greatly outweigh the positives on this one.

I'm glad Murtha didn't win.

Pelosi borrows a page from the Bu$h playbook: "Ready ... Fire ... Aim"

Posted by redstater at November 16, 2006 09:37 AM

snark, I'm kinda glad, too. We'll see how well Hoyer plays with others. In the larger scheme of things, I'd much prefer Hoyer to Hastert!

Shut up scout.

Scout, it only took one "whore" remark from you to get you banned again. You'r done.

the votes that matter are not today. They are when Bush starts trying to ram through another horrible budget bill, horrid torture bill, Ted Hagget for Fed Judge, and so on. In other words, real stuff.

a majority of americans want out of iraq, and feel that murtha represents them. he helped pelosi become minority leader, she returned the favor. let's just hope hoyer doesn't want us to be a party of liebermans. i'm not so sure.

I agree.
I need to read more about Hoyer!

At least we have made some progress.

Steve, Thank You!!!

benjoya, I don't think Murtha's going to fade into the woodwork. He'll still be a valid voice for the military, and I'm he's going to continue to speak openly for them.

Thanks, Steve.

You may notice I changed my handle from YourWorstNightmare...

I now have lots of something I didn't have before...Hope...for the future...

There are a lot of things that will have to be dealt with by the 101st Congress..but I think that decorum, good common sense, and actual "vision" will aid in any issues or challenges that will come up...

But I think that King Chimpy and Darth Cheney are going to get impeached...all roads lead to Rome, the old saying says...and all corruption avenues lead to the Bush White House...

But the Democrats are in power, and a real domestic agenda, and a common sense foriegn agenda can now be had....

One comment on the trolls that posted here in this thread....you would think that after the thumping their Fox-News Heraleded party took last week that they would be less nasty....but I guess that they can't change their spots...

But I look forward to a new chapter in the book of America....in a positive manner

Posted by YourGreatestDayDream at November 16, 2006 10:06 AM

Uh, make that "I'm sure he's going to speak for them."

Posted by iamcoyote at November 16, 2006 10:06 AM

Probably a good thing. Both Hoyer and Murtha are far from ideal in terms of their positions on issues. But given the anti-corruption theme of the election, and the Pelosi-Reid "Open Government" promises, Murtha would have been just the wrong choice.

First, he joined with Republicans in closing down Ethics investigations. Second, his "crap" comment about Ethics probably was closer to what was originally reported than what he later claimed he meant, given his past positions on Ethics.

But the worst is that the truth is he probably would have gone down with ABSCAM were it not for intervention by Tip O'Neill. His actions weren't as blatant as were the actions of those convicted, but if you dig into the tape you'll figure out that he was clearly "on the take" back then -- however he was adept at setting up payments to help hide that fact. (TPM Muckraker has the whole story.)

Just so, GG Murtha has a bad smell and the Dems CAN NOT be seen to be playing the same fucking games that the Republicans have.

IMO that is what the November massacre was all about. If the Dems do not do an awful lot of cleaning up they will find themselves the minority again.

The team has spoken. It's time to play ball with the team we have. Don't let the outdated corporate media pundits distract us. The corporate media's disguised republican campaign support didn't work this time. They are beside themselves.

Hoyer wants Pelosi's job. Worse, Hoyer thinks he deserves Pelosi's job. And his first calculation whenever he has to make a decision is "Will this help me take Pelosi's job"?

He's in a perfect position to swap a green light on conscience votes (i.e. voting with the GOP) for eventual support in a battle for the speakership.

A positively dreadful development. It instutitionalizes an already badly divided (Blue Dogs, I'm looking at you) caucus.

YGDD the 101st Congress was a fews years back. Try the 110th, that one starts in January.

Posted by peter at November 16, 2006 04:12 PM

The GOP could grant Hoyer his wish real soon. Some people here don't realize the whole body votes for the Speakers post. Usually each party puts their own member up for the Speakership with the majority usually winning. What if the GOP's vote is as a block some 202 votes for Hoyer. He could then find some of those 149 people that just supported him for Majority Leader to support him for Speaker. It would take only 16 of them. The GOP's voice is muted this time, so why not try it. Sure would upset the applecart. Jane Harmon would get her Chair and lots of things could be different. What a bipartisan body it would be.

Speaker Pelosi was voted in unanimously. The first woman speaker; it's official! Woohoo!

You were saying, petey?

Posted by iamcoyote at November 16, 2006 04:46 PM

peter, if you spent less time playing with yourself while fantasizing about the Republicans nominating a Democrat to be Speaker of the House you might be able to make something of yourself.

Posted by snark at November 16, 2006 07:00 PM

Another well considered inside baseball theory of peter's bites the dust, with not the slightest chance of it ever occurring----what else is new?
