I agree 100% that "phased withdrawal" is an incredibly stupid idea. The possible idea of withdrawing to the Saudi-Iraq border (A sandy, rocky wasteland) might be a reasonable "middle" way. US troops wouldn't leave Iraq entirely, but they'd be out of the populated areas.
But there's simply no way the US can leave Kurdistan, watch that fall, proceed to abandon Baghdad, etc. By the time we got halfway to the Gulf, the other side would be advancing full force.
