Comments: Canada: Afghanistan is Slipping Away

Right on, soccerdad.

There is a overwhelming, continuing belief by many in the US that Afghanistan is the "good war" and if we just send more troops we'll beat those raggedy Afghani peasants. Well, exactly twenty years ago those raggedy peasants beat a Russian force twice the size and better equipped than the current NATO (NATO--what the hell are they doing in SW Asia??) force now losing. Our man in Kabul, the corrupt ex-Unocal rep Karzai has no popular support. The Taliban, however is supported by Afghanis and by neighboring Pakistan, as it has been for a long time, and there's increasing support from Arab Muslims in the Middle East.

Democracy, of course, is not a US goal but control is. Afghanistan, because of its strategic position, was in the US sights before 9/11.

The US needs to negotiate with the Taliban and end this stupid war that is in its seventh year. But that makes too much sense so look for a major military defeat, as the Canadians are now realizing. Sending more troops, killing more citizens and dropping more bombs, as in Iraq, would just delay the inevitable defeat, probably this year.

There must be a predominately political, well planned and executed process in order to have any chance of success

Well that ceratinly leaves the Mad King, idiot son of George, out of the running in this process.
