The "Osama" Countdown Begins?

by Steve

Although I want Bin Laden’s head on a platter, what are we to make of this? After months of no progress on the hunt for OBL after we let him get away at Tora Bora, the Pakistanis suddenly nab OBL’s operations officer with or without us present, and now a Pakistani politician is saying that credible information indicates that OBL is in the custody of ISI and US intelligence officials.

It is probably another crackpot claim. And yes the White House is issuing a nondenial denial on this. But after months of being gently browbeaten about their inability to track down OBL and Al Qaeda, and with a big vote in the UN coming where we expect, perhaps wrongly that Pakistan will be voting with us, suddenly OBL’s top operations person is found by the ISI and he stupidly leaves his records and computer for all to find, leading a trail to OBL himself?

Bush wants a decision on the existing US/UK resolution this week at the UN. There is a growing suspicion in some circles that Bush knows his resolution is dead, and that the alternate resolution that Great Britain is now working on with other countries in the end will also not meet US approval. All appearances are that Bush wants there to be closure one way or the other on the UN involvement in his plans by Sunday night.

Let us hope that when Bush makes his invasion announcement next week, that he doesn’t also announce the apprehension of Osama Bin Laden. For no matter how great that would be, it would also be one more sorry “coincidence” for an Administration whose motives since 9/11 have been in question.
