Bush Humiliates Blair Again - This Time Over Global Warming

by Steve

Several days ago we reported that the Bush Administration lied to the Blair Administration about America’s use of napalm weapons against Iraqi forces in the early days of the invasion. One has to wonder how long Tony Blair will allow himself to be Bush’s poodle when he keeps getting humiliated by his Number One Ally. In Sunday’s Observer newspaper in Great Britain, it is now being reported that Bush has undermined Blair’s efforts over the last two months to build an international consensus on tackling global warming.

Extraordinary efforts by the White House to scupper Britain's attempts to tackle global warming have been revealed in leaked US government documents obtained by The Observer.
These papers - part of the Bush administration's submission to the G8 action plan for Gleneagles next month - show how the United States, over the past two months, has been secretly undermining Tony Blair's proposals to tackle climate change.
The documents obtained by The Observer represent an attempt by the Bush administration to undermine completely the science of climate change and show that the US position has hardened during the G8 negotiations. They also reveal that the White House has withdrawn from a crucial United Nations commitment to stabilise greenhouse gas emissions.
The documents show that Washington officials:
• Removed all reference to the fact that climate change is a 'serious threat to human health and to ecosystems';
• Deleted any suggestion that global warming has already started;
• Expunged any suggestion that human activity was to blame for climate change
Washington also appears to be unsympathetic towards the plight of Africa, the other priority singled out by Blair for the G8 Summit in Gleneagles.
The documents reveal how the Bush administration has pulled out of financial pledges to fund a network of regional climate centres throughout Africa which were designed to monitor the unfolding impact of global warming.
What is interesting to me, aside from the increase in the amount of leaked documents on both sides of the pond lately, is the endgame. Someone inside the G8 or the Blair cabinet leaked these documents to embarrass Blair and pressure him.

I have no confidence that Blair will ever show a spine and take Bush on, because when it comes right down to it, Blair is a pussy. If he wasn’t willing to separate himself a little from Bush to help himself electorally when a little backbone could have saved Labour from losing some seats, he won’t do it now. But how much more will Blair’s own Labour party tolerate these humiliations, seeing as they do that Bush doesn’t have the big stick over here anymore, before Blair is dumped for Gordon Brown?
