Iraqis To Close Their Borders

by Steve

The Iraqis themselves are left to do what the Bush Administration didn't do itself: close its borders with Syria and Iran. A top Shiite Lt. General announced today on behalf of the government that the borders with Syria and Iran would be closed for 72 hours, using Iraqi troops, which may mean less than it seems. But it also means that the Iraqis are finally stepping up to do something for themselves while they demonstrate to the Iranians that the country's territorial borders must be observed. Note that the border with Iran will stay closed indefinitely.

It appears that the Americans have convinced the Iraqis that they have to stand up for their own borders, and see for themselves the infiltration from both countries. The big question is what the Iraqis will ultimately do about it.
